Thumbs down The Stand just isn't doing it for me.

350 pages in, and The Stand is very mundane. Reading about Randall Flagg walking down a highway for 3 pages (which is a lot more because the text is the size of my pencil point) and whether Frannie is going to keep the baby or not is very boring. There are some great parts, when Stu breaks out and whenever Larry is in it is good. But parts of it seem very unnecessary. They most likely could have cut this book a couple hundred of pages. I hope it gets better??

    Hi,

Oh yeah, it gets better (though I liked the opening anyway).

It turns into the greatest novel of the 20th century IMO.

    Read on!

    Long days and pleasant nights

Uh oh. You've committed sacrilege. Here's some more: I've not read it yet.
I do know, though, that at one point SK was feeling lost and bogged down in it. Maybe you've hit the point where it started to feel like walking through glue and losing some narrative focus?
Others will know better re: the book, but I know from watching the mini-series that I had a 'Thank Christ! Something's happened again!' moment. From then on, it was OK.

I love it so much I read it twice AND bought the 6 hour miniseries on DVD. Keep at it. It is so worth it.

It was my 1st Stephen King read & it all seems to come together as you read. The seemingly irrelevant typically becomes relevant!

Don't feel guilty if you don't like it! Your opinion is as valid as anyone else's around here, and there simply doesn't exist a novel that is universally loved.

I personally am a big fan of The Stand, and I think it's certainly the most epic of any of SK's "stand alone" novels (no pun intended).

But we're all individuals, and this is a forum, so your view is welcomed even if you may struggle to attract much support for it. I've personally previously expressed the view on here that SK left his best writing back in the 1970s/1980s. Can't remember anybody backing me, but nothing can deny me the right to think it and to say it.

But, regarding "The Stand", stick with it, and it may yet start a fire in your imagination.
