    Default Do you find yourself

so familiar with a book, that you end up skimming thru most of it on a re-read?

I am like that with The Stand. I've read it so many many times, that there are parts of it I skip entirely (like the wolfman and Trashy) and even more parts that I skim thru.

I'm saddened by that. I sometimes wish I can enjoy it as a first time reader again, not knowing what's round the corner, KWIM? Experiencing the "OMG!" moments again. But as it is, I could probably give you a detailed summary for each chapter just by reading the first paragraph and I haven't touched it in about 3 years.

Thankfully, I suffer from short term memory loss, so everything is all new to me! Just kidding! But I do enjoy rereading books, great ones, like those written by our favorite author!

I have to make an admission that will probably put me in a minority of one around here.

I have never, EVER read any book twice (other than something like The Stand, Uncut Version). I just don't see the point. I get far more enjoyment out of turning my attention to something new.

Certainly, if I became so familiar with a novel that I found myself skimming through most of it, I'd question the wisdom of doing it at all.

    Hi,

LOL, Charms, me too, one of the great unsung benefits of getting older IMO.

Along with reduced tolerance for alcohol, of course.

Not only do I also suffer from short-term memory loss, but I find the parts I did remember, are explained more fully the second time (and third) times. I find myself saying, "Ohhhhh!!" alot. This only happens in SK books. He's the only author that I read more than once. (Very rarely do I read other books twice; The Lord of The Rings is one example) Now, if you're skimming parts, I would say it's time to leave that book alone for about a year or two before trying to re-read it again. The Dark Tower books especially need to be read more than once. Who hasn't realized things the second time around that they have missed the first time reading?

I really enjoy re reading SK books. It seems I always find something new. During a re read, already knowing the outcome, I am amazed at the foreshadowing that takes place. Like dropping little breadcrumbs for the constant reader on each page.

Every time I re-read a book I pick up some little tidbit that I missed before, I like that.

I re-read a lot of books and I never skip over any parts. What's the point? It's like I'm cheating myself. I'm not reading these things for a school report.

Upon first rereading I usually read through, discovering new parts I've neglected or forgotten all about. But yes, by the third or let's face it -15th time, I just skip to my favorite scenes.
