seen the movie before I read the book. This book is so much better than anything I have ever read by King. I am sure I am not the first one to say this but I was intimidated for a really long time knowing how long the book was, don't know why just was. I finally finished it last night for the first time and thought to myself, "wow, if this isn't one of the greatest books of the 20th century I don't know what is." The characters make the story as you feel for each one of them in a certain way, we can all identify I think with each one in some form throughout our lives from love, loss, rejection, mistakes, hatred, faith, confusion, its all here. Thank you Stephen King as once again you have given me countless hours of enjoyment through your storytelling. This is a book that I think everyone should read at least once. What a great way to start my summer.

Now on to The Dark Tower Series for the first time...can't wait to see the surprises I get from there.

I completely agree, I believe The Stand IS the greatest novel of the 20th century.

And you'll have a great time on the amazing journey that is the Dark Tower cycle. IMO the greatest work ever in world literature, surpassing even Homer.

I feel exactly the same as you do as far as wishing I read the novel before I saw the movie. I hate that whenever Flagg is mentioned my mind automatically pictures Jamey Sheridan. The Dark Tower is a great ride, enjoy and keep away from spoilers!

see i guess im of a different mind set because i saw the mini series LONG before i ever read the book and, as with IT, i enjoyed having a couple preformed images of characters in my head, for example: i think that Gary Sinise made an amazing Stu Redman, and Rob Lowe was perfect as Nick.....but also i did NOT like Molly Ringwald as Frannie one bit and i always use my own imagination for her.

also i watched the movie on TV when i was about 10 i think, and i didn't have the chance to get the book for another 5 years or so, but in that time i had watched the movie about 200 times. then when i finally read it i got the unabridged version and there was so much MORE information that i really felt like i was reading an almost knew story, that was when i realized the movie did NOT even come close to doing the book justice at all.

that is one reason i am leary of a Dark Tower movie series, because how much would they have to change and cut out to make it?

I think that even SK would shoot that particular opinion down, JD, but if DT is still being discussed as a classic in a couple of thousand years, I'll come back and pay homage to your extravagant claim.
