The Mist is a very dark and well-told story I think. I didn't enjoy The Monkey very much, but the entire Skeleton Crew collection is well worth reading and rereading (and, in my case - rereading and rereading and rereading.)
The Monkey is by far one of the scariest short stories SK has ever written. That one and "Gramma" which is also in this book. This is one of my fave short story collections from him. It has has "The Raft!"
I read The Monkey long ago but I remember that this story impressed me and it seemed to be scary to me. I guess I should re-read it in future.
In general, I like this story collection and one of my favorite stories is The Raft. I don't know why but when I first read this story it scared me to death. I re-read it a few days ago, but still it seemes to be really horrible!
All the stories are good! SK tapped into another scary children thing with the monkey toy, just as he did with clowns, in IT. Now THAT was one scary book and the movie, I think, did it justice. I love that movie.
As for the movie version of the Mist, be prepared, it doesn't compare to the story and the ending was changed for shock effect.
Gramma has all the makings for a great movie. Wonder why no one has done it?
Dude this story was frickin creepy. And the scariest part was, a little while after reading it, I was looking in a closet for something, and I saw a little monkey with cymbals in there. Needless to say I got rid of that quickly.
Gramma was done as an episode in The Twilight Zone.
I agree that The Monkey is a really scaryy story. Skeleton Crew has turned out to be one of my favorite books because it has so many many great stories in it. In SC I also loved The Mist, Gramma, Mrs. Todd's Shortcut, The Jaunt, The Reapers Image, Survior Type and Uncle Otto's Truck. I love all his collections of short stories but this is the only one that I have found so many stories through the book that I really love to read over and over!
I did that exact same thing a couple of days after reading the story but I found it at my grandparents house. Those monkey's with those cymbals are really scary looking. Escpecially because this monkey was old and the fur was mangey looking just like the one SK describes.
For some reason, I'm not a big fan of this story. It's not bad, and the climax on the lake is pretty cool, but it just doesn't resonate with me. Could make a really creepy movie, though.
