Dreamcatcher is a great book, but if you like aliens stories, be sure to pick up The Tommyknockers, right after it, that's what I did, and I have to say that I enjoyed more Tommyknockers than Dreamcatcher.

IMO Dreamcatcher's OK when you consider the circumstances of its production. I did think, upon first reading, that the blurb and premise seemed to lead one way while the story itself ended up going places I never envisaged (the bit with the military read more like Dean Koontz, I thought - so there you have it; DK's normal mode is SK when he's away with the fairies on painkillers).
I was slightly disappointed with it (actually, I thought 'Whoops! There's one that should've stayed in the drawer a while longer!')...BUT, upon re-reading, I appreciated it more for what it was, etc. And yes, I know I should do that anyway rather than think of what it might be like in my ideal world (and that'd be my story, and therefore mine to write anyway).
So, basically it's never going to be one of my all-time favourites either, but it's not half as bad as I initially thought it to be - and a lot of the writing is good, with some touching and flat-out funny (in a really dark way) scenes.
I find it very interesting that this book (at least from what I've found on the threads that discuss peoples favorite and least enjoyed SK novels) never gets slammed or particularly praised. It's been mentioned that the circumstances surrounding the production of this novel arsuch that it has to be taken with a grain of salt, perhaps that's why -- sympathetic Sk fans going easy on him. Or, for others like me, it's the fact that this really is the caliber of work that is easily discarded once finished. It certainly has some wonderfully touching moments (e.g the relationship between the guys) these are, unfortunately, countered by some rather dreadful moments (e.g. the ****.toilet scene; the whole military subplot). I remember when I finished putting the novel on my shelf and alking away forgetting it more and more with each subsequent step. Nothing egregious or particularly repugnant, but he has so many better stories that it's unlikely I'll ever read this one again.
Hm, I have this book coming in the mail soon. I have a really open mind and never really "expect" something from a book (I even gave Twilight a shot). Here's to hoping I enjoy it. I didn't love "Insomnia", so I'm hoping to bounce back with "Dreamcather".
Yeah, I have it coming in the mail. I just finished "Insomnia" (wasn't crazy about it, to be honest) and I LOVED "Bag of Bones". So I'm crossing my fingers, hoping I'll enjoy it. I know it's about aliens, but I'm sure it goes deeper than just that (like "Bag of Bones" isn't just a ghost story).
In my humble opinion, Dreamcatcher is Stand By Me on steriods with a dash of Tommyknockers thrown in for good measure.
It's a story of friendship.
Long days and pleasant nights.
hey, this is a chase/pursuit story! dreamcatcher, i mean. great story! as a chase/pusuit story, i think it works better than firestarter. red tommyknockers and dreamcatcher several times. both great stories. dreamcatcher has the friendship element going for it, several characters together forever over time. stories w/several characters that could be the 'main character' are good stories.
I just realized I basically said the same thing twice. Lol.
My book hasn't come in the mail yet, so I ran to a store and bought some other Stephen King books to hold me up while I wait.
