I picked up a freebie on the way out of the library yesterday.
It was a third edition hardback of Bachman's 'Thinner.'
The cover jacket was imperfect...the bloody hand image had two concentric circles from beverage glass condensation superimposed on it, and there was a small tear. But without those imperfections, the cover would be mundane! In my eyes, that cover has become high art, because life happened to it.
I must admit that the story ABOUT that particular book intrigues me more than the story inside it. (I've read it at least twice.)
And then, of course, there's the curious picture of Mr. Bachman on the inside back cover.
The moral of the story? Cruise your local libraries, donate if you can. They need the help and maybe you'll find a keeper.
(I also picked up a pristine 'centennial edition' of Steinbeck's 'East of Eden. That cost me four bucks.)
