I can't remember which Stephen King novel or short story this is from and it's driving me nuts.
There's a young boy, someone's little brother, that gets whisked away to a hot, dry place with cracked earth to wander aimlessly. Several times throughout the story, we see him wandering, scared, hot, sometimes crying. The landscape is reminiscent of that of the opening chapter to The Gunslinger.
Sometime later in the story (the end, perhaps?), the boy appears, returned from this awful place, and crawls into bed next to his brother. Maybe this last part takes place in a hospital.
Your help in identifying the book will go a long way in my getting some sleep anytime soon.
Thanks in advance,
-- Jes
