Hi. My name’s Mike and I’m a “Constant Reader.” Whooo, feels good to finally get that off my chest….heh heh. Ironically the first book I read by King was The Drawing of the Three. I was thirteen and it had just come out in paperback. A friend of mine in school had told me about this scary author named Stephen King and from what he told me, I wanted in. I liked to read and I liked to be scared so he sounded perfect. Anyway, I spotted Drawing while I was shopping with my mother and begged her to buy it for me. For those of you who are wondering why a mother would buy a thirteen year old a Stephen King book, especially in the 80’s, I think she was just happy I was begging her for a book rather then for a toy or candy. Anyway, I read the book in just a few days and upon realizing it was a part two, I immediately went out and bought The Gunslinger. I’ve been a “Constant Reader” ever since. Opening each new Tower book was like going home to old friends, wasn’t it? Anyway, this post isn’t meant to gab on about what a fan I am. I mean…I’m here aren’t I. I’m posting this in hopes that someone of importance reads this and passes on my ideas for the casting of The Dark Tower movies. Well, two of the characters at least. Ever since “Songs…”, I have always believed that Vince Vaughn would make the perfect Eddie. Eddie is basically the comic relief, and Vaughn is funny as hell; but has also played some serious roles. So playing a recovering heroin addict forced to kick the habit after being pulled into a parallel universe by a Clint Eastwood look alike, should be a piece of cake for him.
As far as Roland, that’s a little harder. I strongly believe Roland will go down as one of the greatest literary characters of all time. So, whoever is hired to play him had better do him justice. With that said, a few years ago I thought Jim Caviezel would play a good Roland. He’s a great actor, plus has dark hair and blue eyes. But recently I have also given way to thinking that Hugh Jackman would be great as well. In the right light, when he has the five ‘o clock shadow thing going, he kind of could pass for a young Clint Eastwood; albeit with darker hair. But, Vince Vaughn, in my opinion, IS Eddie, and I really hope whomever does the casting thinks the same. That is of course assuming Vaughn would even want the part. If anyone out there agrees, scream it until J.J. Abrams hears it!!
Johnny Depp or Christopher Walken as Randell Fagg???? Johnny Depp can play anything, and Walken, well, he’s just awesome period!
Oh, and one last thing. I really hope they break the books up into seven theatrical releases rather than making them into a TV mini-series. In part because I don’t like commercials, but mainly because they’ll be able to stay more true to the books in a series of full budget movies.
