    Default S. E. Hinton's return

I searched but didn't find any mention of this so here goes...

The best book I've read lately was S. E. Hinton's newest piece, Hawke's Harbor. I reluctantly picked it up from a bargain bin, needing new reading material but afraid the dreaded "comeback novel" would prove a waste of time and money. Wow was I wrong. Hinton's voice has certainly changed but I think it's better than ever in this incredibly well-written little vampire number. I especially enjoyed her descriptions of a man losing his mind and trying to put the pieces of his life back together; they were unabashed and heartbreaking. The book was a complete surprise, but a wonderful one.

I have only read The Outsiders. I actually liked it alot. Not sure why I never read anything else by Hinton. I'll have to check some out.

Be forewarned, this book got a lot of bad reviews. Mostly those reviews were from people expecting the same voice and general content as found in Tex and Rumble Fish and the rest. Hawke's Harbor is completely different. It is extremely good but totally independent of her earlier work, which I think threw a lot of people for a loop. I thought it was one damn fine book, but don't expect it to be anything like The Outsiders.

Thanks, Damaris, willl check this out. I enjoyed Tex, The Outsiders & Rumblefish, but it's certainly reasonable to expect that her voice and content would be much different now.

I read the Outsiders in Jr. High was a huge Outsider fan there for a while, you could say I was obsessed. I read another book also but never got into her after that.
