My daughter is a freshman and showed some interest in picking up Stephen King for the first time. I gave her The Body, and she devoured it. Now she's hooked. Next, The Long Walk. Probably The Stand this summer. Then It.

    The Dictionary!

If you want to succeed in English, it's frankly a must-read!

Tip - I sometimes start at the back for a bit of variation.

Go with The Stand. The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile are also good.

My daughter is in High School, and she just did a project on Misery. The Stand is too long and complicated for a H.S. project, IMO, unless she's already read it.
They gave her extra points for presentation of the project, so she made a black Royal typewriter out of cardboard and black duct tape, and had the pages of the report sticking out of it like it was typed on there.

The Stand was amazing. I read it in High School and found it less confusing than the Dickens and Shakespeare they made us read. If I had to do a book report now, in College, it would be my first choice. I would have written on The Stand back in high school if we had ever gotten another project like that. Just make sure he's got enough time to finish it. It is quite a long book. It took me just under a month to finish, and I'm a speedy reader, even with all the other stuff happening in my life.

The choice of title would really depend a lot on your son's reading level and the time constraints put on the project.

If your son is not familiar with Stephen King, I would recommend Salems Lot. The book is a pretty quick read and not that hard to comprehend. On the other hand if he is up to a longer more intense book and has the time, I suggest The Stand. Pet Cemetery and It are also a good choices. On a school project scale of 1 to 5, with Salems Lot as 1 and The Stand as 5, I would rate Pet Cemetery a 2 and It 4.

If it shakes and moans, don't open the box.
