Well, I'm from Germany and here they changed some of the titles of SK's books into something totally different. for example Lisey's story is called 'love', the english word. the german title of Duma Key could be translated into 'mania' or 'diliium, I'm not sure. I don't like this because the titles are not as Sk wanted them to be, so tell us stories about SK in your country^^

We have some useless translations in Norway too:

Firestarter = "The fire child"
Cujo = "The danger zone" or "The zone of danger"
Thinner = "The curse"
The long walk = "The death march" or "The march of death"
The drawing of the three = "The chosen ones"
The wolves of the calla = "The wolves"
The shining = "The hotel of evil" or "Evil's hotel"
The Shawshank redemption = "Rain of freedom" or "Freedom's rain"
Needful things = "Something for everyone"
Desperation = "Desperation, Nevada"

I'm pretty sure Sai King has complete control over how his books are titled in other countries.

in holland they don't change much...most titles literary translate the original title. But there are some exceptions:

blaze - the dutch version translates: the kidnapping
rose madder - the dutch version is: rose
tommyknockers - dutch is: the glow (because we've never heard of a 'tommyknocker')
Gerald's game - dutch is: the gamebreaker (literary translation) the english saying is more like a partypooper or something like that.

Bag of bones - it's the dutch version of the saying: skin over bones
Salem's Lot - posessed city
Firestarter - eyes of fire
Duma key - Duma

And the shortstory novels have sometimes a different name...after a different (mostly more famous) short story. Example: we've got children of the corn.

Im happy most bookstores also sell the english versions...I like them a lot more (I always try to read books in their original language). But some dutch editions are not that bad too!

SK leaves the decision to the individual publisher.

Something similar happens in Spanish, for example:

The Stand = Apocalipsis or Danse Macabre (I wonder how this last one can be if that is the title of another and very different book by King).

The Running Man = El Fugitivo.

Night Shift = El Umbral de la Noche (doorstep to the night).

Needful Things = La Tienda (the shop).

Well, those are the ones that I remember by now.

None have been changed in Canada, i guess the translation would be different in other countries and that is why they do that.
