    Question Michael McDowell

In looking at expanding my "favorite writers" list, I keep coming across Michael McDowell. I know he had a hand in the screenplay Thinner, but I don't have any other first hand knowledge. I know that one of his books had an endorsement from Stephen King (can't remember which ones). I have read a number of "reader reviews" of his work and he sounds awfully good. I would like to know what my fellow constant readers think of his works? I have put "Cold Moon Over Babylon" on reserve at my local library. Should I or shouldn't I? Does he have the potential to join my favs?

His Blackwater series (six short novels that essentially form one real novel) is terrific, though it is sadly out of print.

Tabitha King cowrote his final novel, Candles Burning, a couple of years back. Definitely recommended.

    Hi,

That's the only one I've read, and I second what Bev said wholeheartedly.

    Definitely recommended!

Cold Moon Over Babylon and The Elementals are the authors best and scariest books. Cold Moon Over Babylon is quite disturbing and suspenseful and The Elementals is abit lovecraftesque in a terrifically creepy setting.

Oooooo, I love's me some Michael McDowell!! I wish he was still alive and writing. I miss his 'voice'. As previously mentioned, his Blackwater series is definately worth checking out. He wrote it back in the 1980's and coincidentally it was published in six installments, like what King did with the Green Mile. I remember waiting anxiously for each 'chapter' to arrive. Also, the Elementals is good and also Katie. He also wrote under pen names, Nathan Aldyne being one and for the life of me I can't remember the others. He wrote a series of three books under the titles of Jack and Susan (I think that's it anyway) under another pen name and after the names on the title was a date, such as in 1926, in 1946, in 1966 (don't quote me on the dates) and each novel featured the same two characters, with their silly dog, at different times in the century. They were pretty good too. Michael was an excellant writer, you always got your money's worth with him, and he is sorely missed. I envy you your first time reading him.
