Yes I know it's a long title. To add insult to inury it isn't mine. Got it from the Internet Movie Database discussion forum for The Stand. Regardless of it's origins what would you do? Now of course there are always the smart alecks who state they would take a fast car and drive around, moon the statue of George Washington, blow up buildings etc. I suppose there is alwasy the possibility that at first one would do those things.
The world has ended (sort of) and there are no longer any rules.I imagine there are many who would give in to the anarchist hidden away inside so many of us. But what about afterwards? After the shock (or glee) has worn off and you've mourned for the dead, burned down a city, looted all the upper end stores, selected your favorite paintings from the Guggenheim etc.
This applies to those who don't decide to just committ suicide or experience really bad luck like those unfortunates in the chapter I call "No Great Loss".
I'm husband and father of two. I dare say that initially I wouldn't be very good company to be around. Not many would be fun. Even those who are single and have no kids would still lose family and friends. For this to apply to me I have to assume my family didn't make it. If I'm staying true to the logic of the plot of The Stand.I'm also going to assume this applies after Vegas has gone up in a mushroom cloud. For the purists among us.
Would you opt for the solitary life? Hook up with a group? Try to start your own? Which way would you take? I've always been something of a loner, but I'm also a history buff and I have come to realize certain things.. Throughout Human history people have had a better chance working together. Heck that's one of the basis for marriage when you get down to it. I'm a cop and before that I was a soldier. I've spent my entire adult life working for the system and trying to keep it togehter. I guess some one this website would call me a tool, a facist or a cog and they might be right, but civilization, with all it's faults, beats what happens where there is no structure with any sense of balance. See Bosnia, Sudan and Somalia for recent examples.
I guess I would join up with a group that was trying to do the right thing so to speak. And if it turned out not to be the case I hope that I would have the moral courage to speak out or at least to get the hell out of Dodge.
Anybody else care to contribute? This is a somewhat serious discussion thread.
