The TV adaptation wasn't half bad, either, iirc.
I already figured they were typos - though being me it took until the second read.
I guess the logic to it is, the doc is falling apart mentally and is perhaps rushing to get his account written, so it's partly 'forgetting' how to spell and partly because of rushing. To prove this can happen, write something - longhand or on computer (results would show best on screen, though) - as fast as you can, without using the old 'internal censor/editor', then go back later and have a look. It's amazing, the dumb stuff you do despite having otherwise excellent skills.![]()
ooo bit harsh there earlier - I think the reason there are not a lot of responses on this thread (as mentioned earlier) is because most of us who read the story recognised more or less straight away that it was because the guy was becoming more and more delusional - similar to the main character in Duma Key who kept using the wrong words after having the brain injury.
I didnt think for a second it was a typo..........![]()
Yeah SK uses typos in a lot of stories to denote a decline into insanity of some sort. Off the top of my head, in Skeleton Crew he uses this in the story "Survivor Type" a lot. Its a common technique for a lot of other writers who delve into insanity.
I think the 'typos' were purposely added.....to show the degree of OCD. I believe that the typos were included so that each entry had an even number of each letter.....or maybe I miscounted...![]()
Many writers fight language and grammar and Kelsey Grammer. Because they can't quite grease what they want to really say, ya dig?
So they say it another way. Does tintinnabulation ring a bell or three?
I thought that it had to do with counting letters as he suggested earlier in the story, or counting words, and which were easily divided. The funny thing is that I did find myself counting them a few times but then I told myself not to. I listened, but it kept begging me to do it. If it wasn't on purpose it should have been.
I don't know if it was for counting purposes or not, but I did think it showed how Dr. Bonstains was going a little crazy...
It caught me off guard at first, but as it became more frequent, I adjusted to it. Lol
I think that in the end the reader is ment to understand that the Dr. really had a lot more going on on his mind to pay atention to his grammar...
