So hard to choose, because every character in this book is just so very well-written and like Shaper says, how do you choose between your friends? I was 14 when I first read this book, not much older than the Losers. I guess I related to Bev because I'm a girl, but otherwise, not so much, because I wasn't poor, and thankfully never been abused. Ben was the one I liked the best though, probably because we both were chubby (lol though I still am), and he got picked on the worst, and I completely relate to that as I suffered from that too for awhile, though never that violently, and also the shared love of books. I liked him grown up too, sort of a little crush on him in a way I love them all though, Richie and Eddie and Mike, Bill, and poor Stan, I wanted to get to know him more, I was sorry he didn't make it to the showdown. Bowers and his crew, poor Adrian who got so cruelly killed off, sweet little Georgie... I always hate it when the little little kids get hurt, and the poor animals. It/Pennywise/Gray was a great monster, I loved all the flashbacks telling the backstory of things It had done. The Turtle too! Man this book is just so great, it'd be impossible to just pick one character.

Adults like Don Haggarty and Mike Hanlon who were forthright and tried to protect the children against the other adults like Mr. Keene who'd kept their mouths shut.

Ben was my fave loser, as a kid and as an adult. I love kid Bill, but as an adult he annoys me a little, and so does Audra - maybe that's just me being English and the attitude they have towards living in England but Audra in particular gets on my nerves. My other favourite character though is Victor, I just love the way King develops him from being just a bully at the beginning to showing things through his eyes a bit and the fact that he's scared and doesn't really want anyone to get hurt. There's a bit where the losers are all reminiscing and Bill, I think, remembers how Victor had actually approached them one day in August of 58', and he was really scared about something...that sums him up for me, I always liked that little memory.

I guess as kids, I liked Ben's character most, probably being able to relate to him as the fat kid, although without the bullying/persecution. As adults, Mike is my favourite.

In both childhood and adulthood, Bev's character is very likable as you just cant help but feel sorry for her.

I am rereading this book now. This, much like The Stand, is a book that I enjoy so much I will read it often. It is also the first and only book I ever read for the first time and finished only to open it right back up to read it straight through again. Needless to say it is one of my all time SK favorites. I love all of the characters for different reasons:

Bill-He is brave and the catalyst to face the monster who killed his brother. He fights his stutter and that sweet scene with him and Georgie in the beginning where his brother notes that he hardly ever stutters when they are alone together really sums him up for me.

Stan-His adult self is gone from nearly the beginning and you come to understand why he did what he did as the book goes on. He is not as layered as the others but important all the same. This neat, self-contained little man who loves to watch birds and is driven almost made not with fear but with disgust.

Bev-The only girl, smart and tough. Kind of like a pre-teen Frenchie from Grease. I come from poverty and can relate to the shame it causes and how she becomes more dignified because of it.

Richie-Because he makes me laugh. Even though he hides behind humor but smart as a whip.

Sweet Eddie and his aspirator and Mike the lighthouse whose research brings to light some of the most fascinating parts of the book.
Even some peripheral characters like the Irish cop, Bev's friend who tries to help her and the bullies (who turn out not to be one-dimensional at all) are fully realized and fascinating.

So whose missing? My favorite, Ol' Haystack himself, Ben. Shy, sweet, his love of books, his bravery, his strength, his quiet humor, the man he grew into, what is not to love? He always struck me as a brother of sorts to Stu Redman.

Haha my hardcopy copy of this book is so battered and tapeworn from rereading I finally retired it to the shelf and have a paperback if I feel the urge to delve back into the world of Derry..love all the characters but my favorite too is Ben. I was a fat kid in elementary school with a love of reading books too,Ben immediately struck a chord with me..I think the story of the Losers as kids makes you reflect somewhat on your own experiences growing up..Great story, sad ending as they disperse but sometimes that is just the way life goes..

Oh definitely Richie. I love Richie and just like op mentioned that they identified with him the most...so did I. Even down to being squeemish about eyeballs(I get really grossed out over eyeball stuff...my little bro used to chase me around the house yelling "What?! THIS doesn't bother you, does it??!!!" whilst he touched his eye or flipped his eyelids inside out.
I also love Ben. And Mike. As an adult re-reading it(first read it about 20 years ago) I feel sorry for Mike now because he never left and they all became successful in life and stepped away from that whole part of themselves. Richie, Ben and Mike. In that order. Bevie was a good girl, too.

I love all of the Losers but if I had to pick one, it's Eddie.

    Why?

I've always had a soft spot for him, as I wasn't very big or physically-powerful at a young...in fact I pretty much had the same fragility to me in the years before I started playing football. Despite the fact that he wasn't a very physically-powerful, he was still a very strong character at heart. He shows it several times in the books and movies when he steps up to the plate and confronts IT to protect his friends. Also he has this sort of timid nature to him and this sort of naive innocence compared to the other characters, likely because of his mother. He is just very likable to me.
