The Fabulous Baker Boys with Jeff and Beau Bridges. A seemingly simple story about a brother duo lounge act but it is more complex than that. The Jeff Bridges character is more talented than what he has settled for in life, which is playing in a lounge act with his far less talented brother. The story is about selling out, the relationship between art vs income and the dynamics of this brother relationship that gets even more strained when they add the steamy Michelle Pfeiffer as a singer to the act. All three actors are superb and Jeff Bridges, as always is great.

Watched the original Pink Panther (1963) last night for maybe the second or third time ever. David Niven plays a master thief trying to steal a diamond from a Princess (Claudia Cardinale), but Peter Sellers is the one who actually steals the movie. It's hard to believe that Clouseau was actually just a supporting character in this movie. Wow. Anyway, I'm going to watch the second Panther movie A Shot in the Dark (1964) tonight. I'd like the get the Return (1975), Strikes Again (1976), and the Revenge (1978) so my Pink Panther collection would be complete.

I don't even recognize the existence of all the other terrible Panther movies like Inspector Clouseau, Son of the Pink Panther, and the Steve Martin remakes.

The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1976) is my favorite of those.

    But that's a priceless Steinway!
    Not any more!

Inside Job - A documentary about the financial meltdown of 2008. This excellent film takes some very complicated subject matter and makes it understandable for the viewer. It shows how this had been building for 30 years through Democratic and Republican administrations. I think it is a very fair depiction of what happened. In the process of watching this, it will piss you off even more than you already were about the architects of the meltdown. There are some excellent interviews with some of the culprits who were blindsided by the intelligence of the interviewer and offer up some interesting answers. Everyone should see this.

Face Off (action thriller from 1997, one of the best performances from both John Travolta & Nic Cage)
The Frighteners (years before Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson was actually making good movies like this one with Michael J. Fox from 1996)

True Grit (the newer one) - loved it. The girl in the movie was really good. I love the old version and the new version - very different stories but both are good.

Ironweed with Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep - From my favorite genre, dark and depressing. Depression era story about a couple of down and out alcoholics. Both actors are phenomenal in this but especially Meryl Streep. This movie is from 1987 and I don't remember hearing much about it. I guess it was just too damned depressing to be a big box office success. It's really worth seeing but you need to be in the right mood for it.

Unknown (2011) - I was actually surprised by this film. Very good movie. For a guy who is 59, Liam Neeson can still play a great and believable action hero.

I just hope the upcoming Battleship (an adaptation of the Battleship game... only this one is going to have aliens in it or something) movie that Neeson will star in will be at least decent. Then maybe someone will make my dream come true and make Tetris the movie.
