King on Meyer

Although I've read a few of Stephen King's books, I'm not the biggest fan. I'm sure a lot of people are going to tear me apart for this on the boards, but I think he's a bit long-winded. However, I do think he's a great writer and storyteller.

My issue with Stephen King comes from a recent interview he did. I'm a writer and I mostly read classics: Hemingway, Camus, Dostoyevsky, etc... BUT recently I became a huge fan of the Twilight series (no, I'm not 13 years old. I'm 30). Anyway, King was recently asked in an interview about his influence on writers like Rowling (Harry Potter) and Meyer (Twilight). He said the difference is that Meyer can't write worth a damn. It kind of pissed me off because it was a half-true statement. Even though she's not a brilliant writer, she's an incredible storyteller, which sometimes can make up for the lack of writing. King himself is great at writing and storytelling so it really upset me that he upset that and didn't acknowledge Meyer's abilities at all.

I hope he reads this. And I really would like your opinions as well.

This has already been discussed at length in a thread that has been closed down but which you should be able to find with a Search but there is also another thread in the Books forum which is ongoing. Because it has been discussed already, I'll be closing this thread down after posting my response.

His point was that she filled a niche for a certain audience but that technically her writing skills are not good. It's his opinion, but you're entitled to yours and there are others who disagree that she is even a good storyteller -- the thread in the Books forum is where you'll find those posts.
