I don't really want to read his work either...the exact words that come to mind is "cookie cutter", but I also thought that about Stephen King for the longest time. Then I opened my mind and realized he is a great writer...So maybe one day I will read a Koontz book.
I like him.
I think of king's books as a meal and koontz's books as a snack, though. Sometimes It takes me two or three days to get through a king, but never more than one to get through a koontz (or two).
Some of his stuff is pretty good, but some isn't as good. I enjoyed the first couple of Odd Thomas books and they have some good imaginative aspects, but they get predictable. Intensity and False Memory were pretty good. A couple I've read had great story development but seemed like he got to the end of the book and didn't know what to do so just said "and then everything went back to normal" and ended it.
But as an aspiring writer I admire anyone who has written and sold as many books as Koontz has.
I've cracked my share of his books. He is a capable writer, but that is about as far as it goes. The chief difference (which may lead to the cookie cutter comment) between King and Koontz is that King writes stories and many are often scary. He doesn't start out specifically to create a specific genre work. The horror aspect of Sai King is a side effect of his style, not his intention. Koontz is clearly seeking to write genre and uses the standard "W" form plot.
Hi,
Aye, I thought he peaked with Lightning personally.
Long days and pleasant nights
I've read 6 or 7 of his books. I can't really get into them to much. I manage to finish them but his works don't hold my interest.
I liked Intensity. It was good. That's the only book of his that I've read so far.
I've read a few of Koontz's books. Ones worth mentioning are INTENSITY, PHANTOMS, THE BAD PLACE , MIDNIGHT and TICKTOCK. One I wish I hadn't wasted my time on, however, was NIGHT CHILLS.
I just ordered STRANGERS, and looking forward to it.
I can enjoy a Koontz book if I'm just looking to kick back and escape for a little bit. No, he doesn't have the layers of story that King includes, but he can help you wile an hour or two away. I personally found The Taking to be a great story, one of his best. There are always some of his that I think are ridiculous. I want to read Lightning as most people seem to regard it highly!
