Default Duma Key - What about...?

I love love LOVED this book! I just love the way Stephen King writes. So clever, thought provoking and gripping. I find myself always underlining lines & paragraphs in the books that I think are smart or insightful (which turns out to be A LOT, lol).

There were two questions that remained for me after I finished the book, however:

    (1) At the end, how could Edgar still paint things that could become real if Perse was asleep - didn't that power come from her?

    (2) What about the other paintings locked away at the Scoto, and the one that Mary Ire bought? What became of them? Were they still dangerous? I wish Mr. King had answered. =/

Still, I LOVED this book. I loved the characters. I loved the heart in it. I loved the bittersweetness of things. I also loved the creativity and suspense. This book made me laugh, made me cry, made me think, made me scared. It had it all. Stephen King is one of the best storytellers of our time. This book is one of my all time faves!

    Hi,

I was waiting for somebody to ask this!

Perse seemed to awake Duma Key's innate power to amplify natural abilities to god-like levels. It is for this reason that Perse perhaps came here to feed on the energy of those who came there with their talents.

Reminiscent of Thunderclap's vampires, Pennywise, Dandelo and the Crimson King, mayhap?

Also, Duma Key seemed to be a good force opposed to Perse - which was busy corrupting it. So when Edgar paints that final painting, he can still do so because the power comes from Duma Key, not Perse.

When he finally gets rid of Duma Key, these abilities are perhaps eliminated once and for all. Hence, his final picture being the one of the Duma Hurricane.

Also, since the abilities are gone, and Perse is asleep (not that the power came from her, directly) the pictures are once again safe in the Scoto Gallery. And eventually get sold, passed down, some hung on the mantel over the fireplace, etc.

    I hope I answered your question, ifsogirl88.

Okay that makes sense. I hadn't thought that the powers were probably coming from Duma itself . I was thinking that Perse was the power . Thanks!

I can see how that could be an easy confusion!

I'm not sure I totally agree on the key playing any part of it. Obviously Edgar had an amazing amount of natural talent and power inside him (like Elizabeth).

I think it was all him. Perse amplified what was there for her own purposes but Edger used his own to Stand against her.

    Hi,

Good point, but I don't see it like that. In the beginning he says that he tried to draw but he could only do very crap-looking stickmen.

I think that, although there were supernatural shenanigans going on on Duma Key, that Edgar had the power all along, just took a catastrophe to release it for him.

Hmm, I'd have to agree with the power coming from Duma Key rather than Edgar. But it could possibly have been both. The accident might have awakened Edgar's abilities and Duma might have helped things along even further.

    Hi,

How about a re-read for those of us who really want to get to the bottom of this?

I must admit, I am a little puzzled myself.

I just have to finish reading IT. If I may ask, does anybody know if there is a Duma Key re-read Social Group open?

If there isn't, I would be glad to make one.

Duma Key is one of my favorite novels.
