Default A sequal that is better than original

For ages i've been trying to find a film that is better than the original. So far no look but i thought you lot might be able to help me out.

The rules are that you aren't allowed a film out of a trilogy, like The two Towers (Lotr) or The Empire Strikes Back (Star Wars) and you aren't allowed remakes or spin off films.

Most important of all, you aren't allowed a sequel to a film that was rubbish in the first place like Indiana Jones (don't get me started on Indiana Jones). Have fun pondering.

    Matthew.

see these rules aren't fair... what if i liked the first Indiana Jones? your rules are a little bit too subjective, since a "crappy" movie in your view may be a great one to someone else.

but my answer? The Godfather 2... don't come saying it's a trilogy either, it wasn't ever intended to be lol...

Arguable that Godfather II was better than 1 but both are gr8--(the 3rd arc of that came out what 15-20 years after? so that may not count as trilogy)

Aliens vs Alien (about what 5 of those made?)

Christmas Vacation versus vacation (luv CV!)

    what the issue with Indy?

Godfather II should be considered since it wasn't originally planned as a trilogy and the III film while not as awful as critics make it out to be, is no where in the same league as the first two.

I feel like the first Godfather movie is just a very long prologue to the masterpeice that we get with Godfather II. The first one was good even great at times but the second one was brilliant and ingenius. Everything from the performances to the directing and writing was far better than what had come before and Godfather I is still a pretty awsome movie just not a good as II.

The way I look at it is that if they only left it at one movie for the Godfather, people would still remember Marlon Brando's performance but the film itself would not have the iconic status that it has today. It would have been remembered as a good mafia movie,
but the second film combines with it to make it a masterpeice of filmmaking that transcends the genre. People don't think of the Godfather films as good mafia movies, they think of them as brilliant culturally significant films, and in my opinion that's due to Godfather II

Raiders? Rubbish? Woah. I'm not gonna touch that one with a fifty foot pole if I'm gonna keep you in my friends list.

It got into my hand, and it went bad, so I lopped it off at the wrist...

Well, the second 'Evil Dead' movie wasn't truly better than the first... but it was different, and really fun in a ton of ways. It really turned up the volume on the humor, and that was what really made the first one fun. It was more like circumstantial horror humor in the first one. The second, it was just watching Bruce Campbell get his ass kicked by the unstoppable evil dead forces.

Who's laughing now? Who's laughing now...

Plus, at the end of the first one, you don't know if he got away. He almost might have. But bless the Gods that they give him back to us, to get endlessly tortured and beaten within' inches of his life wayyyyy more. (Plus, Bruce could act a little better by the second movie...)

And it was great! In the first movie, he's kind of a coward that just tries his best and gets kicked around. By the second one, he's the only one who knows how to fight. By the third, he's basically an avatar...

Although technically, I think Army of Darkness wasn't really the final movie to a trilogy. Maybe so... But it was an entirely different production. More like the first two were just prequels or something.

Scream 2 (not a trilogy, as Scream 4 is in the works).

    Godfather Part II.

    Toy Story 2.

    Is Aliens better than Alien?
It's a good sequel, but better than the original? Not sure. And there are 4 'Alien' films...unless the AvPs are considered canon (and I have a nasty feeling they are, at least by the producers), in which case there are six (and counting).

A better sequel without using The Empire Strikes Back...I can't think of any, off the top of my head. And in any case, Empire... can be used because it's not part of a trilogy: it's the second film(ed) of six and comprises Episode V of the whole saga.
