Re: Favourite Quotes and Quotations
"The fact that most people think that being selfish means harming one's fellow man, that pursuing one's own self-interest equates to behaving brutally or irrationally, is, as Ms. Rand noted, a 'psychological confession' on their part. In fact it is against one's own long-term self-interest to behave irrationally or trample others. Such actions are the exact opposite of selfish -- they're self-destructive."

As simple as it sounds, we all must try to be the best person we can: by making the best choices, by making the most of the talents we've been given.

"Religion in a non-formal context, I take it, means that a man will look up at the stars with a sense of awe, that he will feel the majestic play of the universe has some purpose and that his own small role in the play must have meaning, if only he has the wit to find it. The clash between science and religion is a clash between science and formal religion, and there is a clear reason for it. All formal religions were devised in earlier times when the understanding of the physical world was much less developed than our present understanding."

from the 1963 Time, Inc edition of Bradbury's "The Martian Chronicles."

"True education makes for inequality; the inequality of individuality, the
inequality of success; the glorious inequality of talent, of genius; for
inequality, not mediocrity, individual superiority, not standardization, is the
measure of the progress of the world."

plotz \plots\, verb:
To collapse or faint, as from surprise, excitement, or exhaustion.
And there would be no way to hide the official tail on her parents' manicured, sweeping drive. “God, Mother would plotz.”
-- Elizabeth Lowell, Die in Plain Sight
I mean, the consul would have plotzed, since it would have made him directly involved.
-- Avner Mandelman, Talking to the Enemy
Plotz is an Americanism that first arose in the 1940s. It comes from the Yiddish word platsn which meant "to crack, split, burst." That word in turn originated in the German word blatzen or platzen.
