I bet most of us have this one book, or even more of King's work that you havent read yet. Everyone else has but somehow it has passed thru you, or you did not get interested by it somehow.
I am a bit ashamed to say that i havent even started with the dark tower series i have heard so much about it and almost everything is positive. The strange thing is that i normally loves fantasy. And even worse those books connects pretty much every book he has ever written but still i have never felt "gosh i must read this".
I wonder if it's the western theme, i have never been impressed by any type of cowboys or western movies or books. *sorry there Clint*
Duma key is another one i havent read yet but i have heard many of the people on this board loves it, i should probably get down to the library and borrow it or? What do you people think, should i go for the dt series or hit the jackpot with Duma key?
And another question, there is 2 different versions of the dt series, or at least some of the books are, one later edited version or? which one should i go for? is it a big diffrence or is it just filler material without any real connection?
Is there anyone else that has some of his works just lying around the corner and you have never felt interested in reading it?

I haven't read Duma Key either, I didn't even know it existed until I started reading this message board.
I have a version of The Gunslinger (DT I) that boasts extra material not originally released but I can't seem to bring myself to read it. I don't know why, its just not the same. You know? I'm a little odd, I admit.
I've also never read Carrie or Christine.

I have had a copy of The Gunslinger on my shelf for well over a year now. It's not that I don't want to start on the Dark Tower road, it's just that there are plenty of other King books piling up unread on the shelf too!
I have just started Christine, but have Desperation, The Green Mile, The Shining, Rose Madder, From A Buick 8 and Needful Things all bought and awaiting reading. I feel that starting the Dark Tower series will require a period where I have little or nothing else pending! Or should I just dive in after Christine???

These are the unread books of Sai Kings that i have on my shelf awaiting my attention:
Christine
Night Shift
The eyes of the dragon
The dead zone
The Greenmile
The Tommyknockers
Dreamcatcher
Bachman Books
Nightmares and dreamscapes.
I got all these book from the cheap bookstore down the road from me (all brand new and all for £1.00 i got them as they go very quick.
Mefistofeles, as to what you should read i would go for the Dark Tower, it was my first ever SK book to read and i've bin hooked ever since. You won't be disappointed by it. I'm not sure what the difference is between the two versions as i only have the expanded copy.
Happy Reading

I've never read On Writing. You really should give THE DARK TOWER a try. I've never been fond of westerns either but it really isn't a western. Trust me. I'm on my 4 or 5th re-read of it.

You can't go wrong with either. I just recently read Duma Key and I was blown away. It was such an epic story that pulls on your heart. I have also read the DT series and I am very thankful for the journey I was lead on.

I have quite a few books that need read and I told myself that I would start the DT series after them...Well I read book one last week and am already about 120 pages into book three. What I did was read one of his short story collections and then dive into the Dark Tower series head first

I felt the same way you did about the "western theme" but I ran out of things to read and started the DT series. THANK GOD I DID!! The DT books are amazing and surprisingly they really dont have a western theme. Its WAY more of a fantasy than a western IMO. Its the best thing I've ever read. Please get past the western theme and read it. The gunslinger is a little slow but after that...there are no words.
As for a book I've never read, I've never read The Dark Half, but I just got it in the mail and plan to start it tonight.

Forgive me for not sticking to the subject, but does anyone have an idea as to where to get a copy of The shawshank redemption? - Actually by Stephen King. Or any news on a future reprint? Thanks.
It's not a stand-alone book. It's part of Different Seasons.

There are several I haven't read, but I'm going through them all in order now. The DT is amazing; I highly recommend it. In a way it has a western theme, but in a way it doesn't. It's like a really trippy western. :D Actually, in some ways it's like a reverse western; there is an "old way vs. new way" struggle, but it's different from what you might expect. And yes, there is a gunslinger, but he's different from what you might expect as well. I could be more specific, but I don't want to spoil it for you.
Now I want to read it all again myself. :)

Carrie, Firestarter, Cujo, Tommyknockers, Gerald's Game ... and he's starting to put out new stuff so fast it's really hard to keep up. I have not read Lisey's Story, Duma Key, or Dark Tower: Long Road Home, and it appears he's got more either out or coming out. Not bad for "retirement." One wonders if King ever finds himself starting to hum the eighth stanza of the song of the turtle at all ...?

The only one that I haven't read is The Colorado Kid-I sort of forgot it existed until a month or so ago!
You can't go wrong with either the DT or Duma. Haven't been able to bring myself to read the 'extended' Gunslinger. I didn't really like the extended Stand as much as the original, so my reasoning is to just stick with the original Gunslinger.

The Shining. My mother gave it to me for Christmas last year and I kept overlooking it on my shelf. I've finally pulled it out, dusted it off, and got it ready to read!!!!! :biggrin2:

My way of thinking is I will get to it, like the Dark Tower series, I eventually got to it. I wanted to save it for when I finish all of his books, you know go out with a big bang? But then I realize I missed out on the tie ins so immediately got to it, can’t say I regret it.
Books I haven’t read are the newer ones, Duma Key, Dreamcatcher, Lisey’s Story, Blaze, Buick Eight, Cell…
A part of me just wants to rush to get to those (attempting to read his book in chronological order with the occasional jumping) but another part of me doesn’t want my journey with Stephen king to end. Does that make sense?
So I take my time and put authors in between, I think when I finish all his books I will be very sad, frankly I hope Stephen king will continue writing so that doesn’t have to happen.

I have 3-4 books in waiting. Night Shift, Four Past Midnight, IT. And I've just started reading The Stand - uncut edition.
But there are many other books I haven't read yet. I'm from Denmark and it seems to me that SK isn't the most popular writer here. It is actually quite difficult to get hold of his works - especially the older works.

Hi,
I've a mint 1st edition (thankee Book!) of 'The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon' and I've started it three times and never managed to finish it; the only Sai King that I haven't finished.

I still have not read:
The Dark Tower 1-7
Desperation
The Regulators
Different Seasons
Dolores Claiborne
The Eyes of the Dragon
Four Past Midnight
From a Buick 8
Gerald's Game
The Green Mile
Insomnia
The Long Walk
Nightmares & Dreamscapes
Pet Sematary
Salem's Lot
The Shining
Skeleton Crew
The Talisman
Black House
Thinner
The Tommyknockers

I am currently reading Needful Things and have found it to be excellent so far. Also, does anyone know where I can obtain a copy of Rage written under Bachman? I can't seem to find it anywhere.

Needful Things was one of my first too.
So last night I went home and started packing up my book case, getting ready for my big move & I realized that I had never read Christine, Cujo and Danse Macabre. They are now on my list. Unfortunately I only have them in paper back.

Go for the DT series. Roland may appear to be out of the wild, wild west but he's so much more.

I plan to read some HP Lovecraft and Donald Tyson related Necronomicon : The Wanderings of Alhazred
Seeing how so many horror writers use HP lovecraft (yog-Sothoth rules anyone?) and his Necronomicon I am very interested on the framework.

I have never read the DT series, except The Gunslinger. Never read Firestarter either. Or Roadwork, although I started it once. Oh, and Black House. Haven't done that yet either. Still haven't started Duma Key. I have all these books though, and as soon as I get time, I'm going to read them. I'm in kind of a reading slump lately.

You're not alone. Sometime I can tear through 3-4 books a month and other time it's nothing. I guess your brain needs the rest. But once you start rolling there's not stopping. I have never read Firestarter either. Did you read the Talisman? Because I would definately read that before you start Black House. Duma Key is great, it really transports you to the Keys, you can totally imagine the surroundings. Good to read in the summer for the full effect, with the beach still fresh in your mind.

I have only read the first 2 Dark Tower books - mostly due to financial difficulties. I am waiting for Duma Key to come out in paperback, so that I can afford to buy it. Everything else, I believe I have read at least once, some a few times.

I love the Dark Tower series but I've only read up to Book 4 - Wizard and Glass. I got sidetracked reading the other Stephen King books I haven't read yet--which is most of them. I got a very late start in life when it comes to SK books, but, darn it, I'm catching up as fast as I can.
If you want my advice I would say, run don't walk to the nearest library or bookstore and start reading the DT series right away. If you like SK and you like fantasy, you will LOVE The Dark Tower.
I was kind of put off by the Western theme at first too but you'll discover it's much more than that. You may find the first book, The Gunslinger a little slow going at first. Many people do. I did. But don't let that stop you. Once you get to the next book, The Drawing of the Three, the series takes off and it never looks back. I have a much greater appreciation for The Gunslinger now since I've read the others.

Yeah, I have read The Talisman. It was great once I was able to get into it, which is probably why I've put off Black House for so long. I really probably need to reread Talisman again first. :smile2:

I have read Duma Key after holding back since it first came out. I didn't like the name so it didn't inspire me to buy it let alone read it. I got it as a Xmas present and read it. I do believe it would be in my top 5. AMAZING!! I have Lisey's story which i've had on my book shelf for over a year and still haven't picked it up. Must try and get to it soon. Have read that people love it so much , it has given me the itch to get started on it. My favorite book of all time is The Talisman. I can read that one over and over and never get sick of it.

Mefistofeles, I would start the DT series, so many other stories relate to it. Besides, it is not a Western...Roland is no cowpoke, he is a Gunslinger...I have read the whole series several times already...it is well worth your time.

I have Duma Key, Secret Windows, and Cycle of the Werewolf to be read. I am in the middle of a reread of DT6 at the moment, then after DT7 (again) I will pick something new to read. It might just be Cycle of the Werewolf. A short read, then I can finish some classic lit I am also in the middle of. THEN Duma Key and Secret Windows.
