View Full Version : Do you like your given name?

Do you like the name your parents gave you?

I've always hated my name. It's not that it's ugly or anything, it's just that every other girl born in the 70's was named Jennifer, and I got tired of being part of the crowd.

I have a couple of friends who've legally changed their names. I've always said I was going to do that, but I never did and now I wonder how everyone (me, included) would roll with a new name?

So, do you like your name? If so, why? If not, why? Is there a story behind it?

BTW-I'm not asking you to tell us your name if you're not comfortable with it. A lot of folks don't share their names on the internet, and that's OK. I just want to know what you think about it :)

I'm not crazy about my last name as the majority of people can neither spell nor pronounce it correctly. It's my ex-husband's name and I always said I'd change it legally when my youngest turned 18. That was 2 years ago but I still haven't done it because it would be such a PITA to change all the legal records, credit cards, etc. etc. As for my first name, I don't hate it but I don't really identify with it either. Kind of hard to explain, but it doesn't feel like ME, just a label I was stuck with. I don't have any other name that has caused any Eureka moment, though, so guess it will be with me until I die. :smile2:

Well, my father wanted to name me Ethel... I was never thrilled with Denise.. It's hard for kids to pronounce. But I have to admit, It's a lot better than Ethel.

I may have it leagally changed to "Mom", since that's what my daughter calls me! :wink2:

Hi,

I've always thought that we should be able to choose our own names when we reach eighteen.

My parents gave me the most common first name in Scotland at the time, so at least it doesn't stand out, and hardly anyone can either pronounce or spell my second name.

I love my given names. It's because I never met anyone with the same name, even though there are different variations on how to write it.
Unlike many people I actually use both names, it was never something I planned, it just happens to be so.
I noticed that at work or at school everyone uses my first name, when I meet someone on a professional or academic level I introduce myself using my first name.
When I'm among friends or family I use my second name, and when I meet new people outside of work or school I always introduce myself by my second name.

Now some of my classmates have become very good friends over the years and they too noticed this, so they started calling me Luli, which is a combination of the first two letters of my two names.

My first name is Lijan -- (pronounced: Lee-Ann)
My second name is Luwen (pronounced: Lue-Ann)

Weird huh? :biggrin2:

I'm named in honor of both my grandmothers. Combined their names to make one. Maryann. It's OK.
But the married name is a pain. Many jokes made about it. I'd go back to my maiden name, but as MsMod said it's a PITA to change all the legal stuff, and no could pronounce it anyway. So I just go with "flow" of my last name.

I'm not crazy about my last name as the majority of people can neither spell nor pronounce it correctly.

I'm the same way. My married last name is ALWAYS pronounced wrong and it drives me crazy. Makes me wish I'd kept my simple-to-spell, easy-to-say, four lettered maiden name!

I used to have my given name because I'd never met another girl with the same name in school. I wanted to be a Sandy or a Jennifer. Now, even though I realize my name is a lot more common than I remembered as a kid, I'm glad not everyone has it. :smile2:

I was going to be named Jennifer too (yup, 70's child), but my mom said when I was born, they handed me to my dad. He looked down and said "Oh, what an angel."

So out with Jennifer, in with Angela. I used to dislike my name (I think if you were born in the 70s, your name was Jennifer, Angela or Lisa), but now I am usually called Mom or honey, so I actually don't hear my name that much anymore.

Hi,

It is, in fact, Dalglish, which is a pre-Celtic Pictish name, like Colquoun, Farquar or Buchanan.

It's pronounced something like (but not quite!) Dalgliesh.

And no wonder you use both names, Luli, that's beautiful!

I really didn't care for my first name when I was younger, mainly because the only women I'd ever met named Evelyn were at least 80. :D I've grown into it, I guess, and I'm glad I'm not a Jennifer (sorry hipmamajen) or Michelle or Tammy or Amy like every other girl I went to school with, but it was kind of a cross to bear when I was a kid. The older I get, the more I identify with it. Unlike the fabulous Ms. Mod, I am bonded with my name. I'm it, and it's me.

Now, my middle name is absolutely horrid, and I would consider changing it, so if anyone can think of a good middle name (or two even) that goes with Evelyn and a one-syllable last name, let me know.

I hate my name, it's really misspelled: Johana. Why? My mother wanted to call me: Barbara Ann, and my father wanted: Jo Ann. And then in the Registry Office they understood: Johana! ugh! I would like to change it for Johanna or Joanna, in order to fix the trouble about the H and N. But, I think I also would like to call myself in another way: I really like Dragafari, that's why adopted it as my artistic pseudonym. But about Johana, I doesn't feel it like my own.

Well my first name is Cory. I like it. A lot of people call me Cor(in this neck ofthe woods that is pronounced Coah).

My last name is very french - lots of vowels. Nobody can pronounce it unless you know french. It is a fairly common word in french. I won't complain though, it makes me unique and I'm proud to own it.

In fact, I am happy with both of my names. I have never had a desire to change either. :smile2:

Nope, I've corrected them and they still call me Elizabeth, not Liz which is generally how I introduce myself, one lady argued with me when I was 7 and told me I was wrong. :eyebrow: K, 7 year olds don't know their own name. . .

I hate my married name. I never should have taken his.

Where you felt it common, I was way on the other side of the scale.:biggrin2:

While I was growing up I hated my name. Now I appriciate it for it's uniqueness. My name originated from my grandfather's Welsh/Irish ancestory.

I've been fortunate to have one of those names that has endless nicknames associated with it. Anytime I get bored with one, I can always change to another... My parents still call me by one name, my siblings and some friends by another, and neighbors and acquaintances by yet another... And I'm not even counting variations on those nicknames (one of which is, really, Mrs.Smeej). I also respond to almost any endearment; "Hey honey!" or "Moooommmm!" elicit a response, even if not directed at me. It is a rather confusing existence...

As for last names, I went from a relatively short (four letter) Irish last name to an unpronounceable 9 letter last name that I still, after fifteen years of marriage, have trouble spelling... Okay, okay - I'm exaggerating, but not by much. I used to bemoan the change until I realized that it could be quite useful. Being a notoriously soft touch for salespeople, I could safely ignore anyone who called and couldn't pronounce the name. It obviously wasn't someone I needed to talk with. I'm pretty sure I've dodged at least three magazine subscriptions and two offers to clean my carpets for a "low, low price" simply because the salesperson mangled the last name and I could reasonably claim that the caller had the wrong number. :biggrin2:

I actually really like all my names. It's quite solid. My last name is a single syllable, and often people call me that instead of my nickname.

I am a paranoid though, and I nearly changed my last name at one point in my life, and I still could, just to shake a few more ass-clowns from where I grew up. My father meant nothing in my life other than sperm donor and reason for my mother to fight for child protective services, so I figured taking my mothers maiden name would fit just right. Formalities and lineage tags mean quite little to me, in the grand scheme of things. I'm more concerned about the quality of life than the fluff surrounding it. Maybe I should take my sisters married name instead... Then I'd be a 'King', and everybody would know the towels I kidnapped from my moms house were mine. XoP

But if I go so far as to change my name, I might as well change my face and bank balance as well. Rewrite the whole system, ya know? I know nobody ever says they already figured what their name will be in Heaven. But then, it's kinda taboo to speak of stuff like that...

I'm not very happy with my name. My first name is so common I have to spell it differently to get just a little effect (but people usually spell it the way I would if I didn't differ it). My last name is very uncommon and people love to mispronounce it. It is too complex.

I wouldn't mind doing all that legal stuff to change it.

I was supposed to be a Jennifer as well, (child of the 70's)my middle name my mother invented(Tarese pronounced tear-ese) my last name no one EVER gets it right (Chopp, pronounced with a long o, but always pronounced chop) but I have grown use to that as well and soon I will be a Phillips anyway.

My last name is very easy, just three letters and I think if anyone manages to mispronounce it there's something wrong with them.:biggrin2: My first two names though are a completely different story, I've heard so many different unbelievably weird and wrong pronunciations of my names - too many to mention.

My first name I have no problem with. I took many years to get used to having my middle name that I do.

I always thought my first name was a bit boring. I'm Tracey, by the way, for those who don't know. I changed my mind when a friend wanted to name his child after me. Later on, I looked up the meanings for my first name, and I got everything from 'harvester' to 'combatant' depending upon the source.

I'll take 'combatant'. That suits me to a fault.

I was named Tracey because my parents hated their own heritages and they wanted to give me an 'Irish' name. Go figure. Try growing up in a house where the folks hate where they came from. French with a splash of Metis on one side. Hungarian, Austrian, and Romanian on the other. I look like my Austrian great grandmother.

I actually have a two word first name. Two very common first names combined to make one. My middle name is Rose after my paternal grandmother - my oldest daughter's middle name is also Rose. My maiden name was short, but nobody ever pronounced it correctly and I always had to spell it out. My married name is sweet and short and is actually also a man's first name. I never have to spell it out, but many people assume it is my husband's first name and that his first name is his last name. Oh - it gets very confusing for some people...:biggrin2:

I had apparently been named after my grandmother, but then given up for adoption at 2.5 years old. My new parents changed my name so that I would be "theirs" and forget my prior years. They changed the names of all their new kids too; on the advice of catholic charities. Both my names were ok but I think it is a bad idea, imho (after one introductory college course in psychology) to change a small child's name. It creates a fracture in their identity. (of course unfortunately, I was able to read and write before kindergarten, so I knew my name was being spelled wrong :eyebrow: )

I like my name, sometimes people have a hard time pronouncing it, but it's fairly straight forward. I've really grown into my middle name, my sister and I both have the names of our Grandmother's so we have these "older" style middle names, mine is Loretta. As far as my last name goes I was always proud to carry my father's name; Montgomery...but I'm in that situation now where I'm engaged and coming to terms with the idea of changing that...I actually quite like the one I am to acquire, it's Llewellyn-Welsh, (Guinevere we've actually discussed your name as a "possible child name" when the time comes). It seems people get messed up with the double "L" but I think I can handle a little miss-pronunciation in order to make my love a happy man.

My first name is Jeannette (old fashioned for sure), but I never shortened it to Jean, or Jen, or Nette. It's grown on me over the years and I'm quite fine with it. My surname is Schauble (grandparents were German immigrants to the US). It represents my heritage of which I am quite attached to. I told my boyfriend that if/when we get married I will not change my last name to his (I may hyphenate them as a compromise). He thinks I'm being ridiculous, but I asked him how he would like changing his last name to mine and that seemed to rectify the whole thing.

As for last names, I traded an unfamiliar German name that no one could pronounce or spell to a seemingly Polish (long story) name that no one can pronounce or spell-nets even, I guess. I do agree with Mrs. Smeej, though-it is easy to weed out the sales calls:biggrin2:!

My first name is Melody, and people always ask me if my parents were hippies (no, they weren't), and even though "melody" is a word that you will find in a dictionary, people still mangle it. A lot of people think I'm Melanie. I've had people spell it Melodie, Melonie, Melondie, Mellody, etc. One of the clients where I work (residential facility for people with mental disabilities) calls me "Ebony" and I am probably one of the whitest women alive, so people at work call me Ebony. Only the closest of my close friends are allowed to call me "Mel;" I hate it. But they can't seem to stop, and I don't mind.

I like it, though. It's much too feminine for me, maybe a little soccer mom-ish. But I live to challenge stereotypes, so maybe it's perfect!

I hate my middle name (Renee) so much that in school I stared putting a ' over the last e to give it some pizazz. *lol* That didn't last long.

If my boyfriend and I get married (we've been living together for 5 years and I'm in no hurry), I don't think I'll take his last name because then I'll be Melody Stacy. Oh my. It sounds so...snobby.

And to the people with hard to pronounce last names: I used to be a telemarketer, and when you got one of those names right, people were SO much nicer! I had about half a second between seeing the name pop up and having to ask for the person, and when you have the unfortunate circumstance of calling "Helena Polfelbjergenstein" you wince while you say it. I always went for it, some people would just ask for the first name, but that's misleading and unprofessional, IMHO. And you can't stutter or say it in spurts because you'll get yelled at or hung up on. I mangled a lot, but when I got it, it would ALWAYS lead to a conversation: "You're the first telemarketer to ever pronounce Helfenpolikenyarder correctly!"

I'm glad I'm not alone. For a long time I thought I was the only weird one who didn't like my name, when everyone else in the world seemed to get along fine with theirs.

And, I'm glad to know that some folks really like their names. I hope my kids like theirs. I tried to make them unusual (more unusual than Jennifer, that is) without being too out there. My husband's name is more unusual, so he and I had to find a delicate balance between him always wanting a name everyone could spell and pronounce, and me wanting something, ANYTHING different! :) I hope that worked out well for our kids.

I'm not crazy about my last name as the majority of people can neither spell nor pronounce it correctly. It's my ex-husband's name and I always said I'd change it legally when my youngest turned 18. That was 2 years ago but I still haven't done it because it would be such a PITA to change all the legal records, credit cards, etc. etc.

Your husband's name was Marsha? :smile2:

Weird huh? :biggrin2:

Not weird. Beautiful.

Pepino, I've always loved the name Jeannette.

My full name is Kimberly and I didn't like when I was a kid because all the cool kids had names like Sheri, Kathi, Jodi etc. Now I'm used to it and use it professionally. My last name is my married name but I like because it reflects my Danish heritage as well as my husband's. My maiden name was Wells, which I didn't like because it put me at the end of the alphabet.

I forgot to tell that I've a last name (Condon) that in Spanish means condom. People have always laughed at me and my family because of it. But I really don't mind. And when I was at universty a teacher use to say that I was an "eek" cause my second name starts with E and surname with C, so, then it sound "eek". Crazy people!

My grandmother came up with my first name and I really like it except it bugs me
when they call me Diane and not Diana, which is the correct way to say it.
Diana is the Goddess of the Moon and the Goddess of the Hunt and is a very ancient
name that I think is neat. So I am happy with my first name. My last name is
pretty common and is originally of Scottish origin.

“A rose is a rose and would smell the same by any other name”. I know that is an old, corny saying, but it is true. I have a very common name and it does not change who I am. I have met many people who go by the same name as me and they are all very different than I.

We are who we are and the name we carry has no impact on what we have done and what we will achieve. There are many powerful people in this world that have very common names: George (bush, President of USA), Sam (palmisano of IBM) Bill (gates of Microsoft), John (woodward of UK Film Council), need I go on.

My first name is Robert. When I was a kid my parents decided I would be a Bob. The same thing you do for apples. They personally knew no one named Bob so they figured I would make a good one. When I was two years old we moved. The neighbors to the left of us were the Buices. A man, his wife and their son. Bob and Bobby. To the right were the Canadys. The father, Bob and the rest of the family. Directly across the street were the Bozettes. There was Tucker, who was my age. Steve, two years older and the grown brother, Bobby.
If you walked outside and yelled Bob it sounded like you were in an echo chamber from all the replies. I think that is where the hatred first started. Not for my parents. For the name. It's not really even a name, it's a description. An action word. One of the things you get on baseball promotion nights. A BOBblehead. Shheeess!!!

Maybe a rose is a rose, but names are different. How about resumes? How many employers are turned off or interested just because of a person's name? It is the first thing they will see. If names were irrelevant I don't think anyone in the music or film biz would change their names. I mean, Bob Dylan's last name was really Zimmerman. Would he have been so successful as Bob Zimmerman? Maybe si, maybe no. Who remembers the Northern Exposure episode where a baby was found and the entire town was trying to give her a name? Chris, the deejay, had some interesting musings about names on that episode. I'll have to watch that and get back to you all about what he said.

I may have it leagally changed to "Mom", since that's what my daughter calls me! :wink2:

Long days and pleasant nights.

When I was pregnant with my daughter my sister got really upset when she found out we were going to name her after our one Grandmother "Sophie" as she wanted to name her future daughter that. I flippantly said that she could have our other Grandmother's name -"Ethel"- she wasn't too thrilled with me:oops: She ended up only having boys anyway so I am glad I didn't change my daughter's name on account of her. It makes me feel good that my daughter has my Grandmother's name as my Grandma, even during her last stages of Alzheimer's, connected with my daughter and always knew who she was- though she never remembered my husband.:biggrin2:

BTW- I loved my Grandma Ethel, though she wasn't that much a part of our lives, but , yeah, Ethel is a tough name.-the right person could pull it off though and be very cool, I think but as a parent you would be taking a risk.

I have always liked my name but I sometimes wish my parents had been really funky and named me something 'out there' like "Sunbeam" or "Butterfly"-it's that hippy in me, I guess

When I was a child, my parents would call me Cheri when all was hunky-dorry and Cheryl when they were mad at me. Up until about 15 years ago, I went by the nickname Cheri. Then when I started working for a large corporation which shall remain nameless, there were two or three Cheris or Sherrys there, so I went by Cheryl and have ever since. My married name, Armstrong, is relatively easy to pronounce. My maiden name never was and invariably was mispronounced.

Boy am I in trouble, I named my daughter Jennifer. It was my best friends name in grade school, and I always wanted this to be my name. lol :bat:

I'm the same way. My married last name is ALWAYS pronounced wrong and it drives me crazy. Makes me wish I'd kept my simple-to-spell, easy-to-say, four lettered maiden name!

I used to have my given name because I'd never met another girl with the same name in school. I wanted to be a Sandy or a Jennifer. Now, even though I realize my name is a lot more common than I remembered as a kid, I'm glad not everyone has it. :smile2:

My name is Sandie. I was given the "ie" part in 3rd grade. There were four Sandie's in my class. One got Sandy, next got Sandi, third got Sandee, and I got Sandie. I have always hated my name, but all of my family just calls me Sam.:bat:

Only my middle son Jason doesn't mind his name, although he has told me that he likes the name Jack better. As far as the 70,s and the name Jennifer, well I guess that holds true for me too, I decided in 1978 that if I ever had a daughter she would be named Jennifer. :bat:

My first name isn't too bad, I get called quite a few different variations of it. But my surname sucks! It is actually most often used as a first name, so consequently I am often addressed by my surname when I've just been introduced. (& I hates that...:glare: )
I usually try to mumble my last name when asked, so people can only hear the first bit. :biggrin2:

Yes.

I know its hard to believe, and I'll tell you when I was younger 'Kerry' ws just not the name for a boy. I got hounded all the time, picked on relentlessly because of it....now I'm okay with it.

There is one issue. I can't see Kerry being the name of a successful writer, so I us K.S. Thomas. Thats the only thing I have an issue with.

RebeccaS
August 5th, 2008, 03:43 PM
Rebecca is entirely too common, as to the author of this thread, it's one of those common 1970's names. My maiden name of 'Wright' made it that much more boring to me.

Now I'm married with some blasted horrid last name, noone can pronounce it when seeing it, and my husband (although I may love him to pieces, I detest this!) insists on making my web domain based on my entire name... Rebecca Ann Wright S....... And, he won't support me if I go with making an easier-to-pronounce last name to publish in.

The backstory behind my mother giving me this ordinary name, I think, is that she expected a boy up til I was literally born and came out a girl. Her planned name for me was John (yes, yes, exciting AND original). For lack of imagination, and I'm entirely sure out of disappointment, she picked a name out of the Bible instead of putting some real thought behind it.

A "current" name is like a flower, dewy and fresh. A classic name is like an antique that has been lovingly handed down from generation to generation, gaining a patina along the way that only adds to its value.

I think Helen is a graceful name, with a lot of elegance and presence. It's almost regal. You may not have any friends named Helen, but what about Helen Keller, Helen Mirren, and Helen of Troy, the most beautiful woman ever? Helen is a name with a powerful heritage. You should wear it like a crown.

Just my opinion, of course. :)

I'm Arnout. But it also can be spelled Arnoud, Arnaut, Arnaud or if you go in upper class mode start with Ae and/or end with dt. Once someone managed to make it Ernout. So I always have to spell it.

My familyname is quite rare (it derived from a German name 200 years ago) and also has to be spelled over and over again. But I'm used to it.

My second name is Paul (my parents thought let's give him two names so he can choose the other if he doesn't like one) but I never use it. Everyone knows me as Arnout so I don't really feel the need to change it.

I don't like the last name, though I like the fact that I can be pretty sure that there's noone else with the same name (my father is currently figuring out the family tree and hasn't come across another Arnout yet, let alone another Arnout Paul).

My first Name is Farrah. And what I hate the most, is when people attach a certain actresses last name to it! I had a math teacher that would do that every time he called on me. And whenever I meet people, they usually say," OH, like Faucett?" Um, NO. Like ME. :eyebrow:

As a kid, I always hated my name. My generation should receive a prize for finding new and inventive ways to make fun of the name Trevor. Part of the problem was that in the 80s, Trevor wasn't a popular name and second problem was if you say it just right you can make it rhyme with Webber. (as in the delicious Webber's Bread). shortly after this wonderful rhyme was discovered it became a racial slur too

As an adult (once all the jokes got old) I learned to appreciate my name.
I like that its a little rarer than most names. I dont have to look around that much when someone yells my name to another guy, less neck strain. and Who gives a flying monkey &*#@ that it sorta rhymes with webber. I just wish the red hair jokes would get old.

Brandan To'totch Claplanhoo McCarty, try saying that three times fast. I couldn't even say it when I was drunk, good thing sister was driving because I would have been hauled in for a dui. That is about 31 letters, so I started to sign and it is my pen name as well; B. T. C. McCarty. Easier on my hand. So yes and no, I am the first born so I have to carry my mom's last name and my father's last name. I thought of just dropping everything and go by Wolf. Nothing else, just Wolf, but then life would be boring. It is fun to confuse people with my name. To'totch is Makah Nation for Thunder Bird, rumor is that it is over seven generations old. *shrugs*

I realize that this is an old thread, but I'd just thought I'd put my $0.02 in just to feel useful. The name Jacob is very common. I've never thought about whether I really liked it or not. I guess I like my name. It's something simple and no one ever has to ask me how to pronounce it.

Now if I was named something like Josephus Gamothorp McClanster Gorganite MacDoogal III, I'd probably be ticked.

I don't really like it but I like the way my parents picked it. My grandmothers name was Gwendoline Rose. She lived in Wales until WWII. My grandfather was in the air force and they met and fell in love. Then he brought her back to Georgia and the rest is history. It's like one of those epic love stories. :smile2:

My middle name is a story as well. My youngest aunt Catherine Marie was killed in a car crash when she was 5. She wasn't wearing her seatbelt and was thrown through the windshield.

I don't like "Rose Marie" but my parents put a lot of thought into it so I think I'll keep it.

Most of my friends have names which would be considered quite common (that sounds awful, sorry) or just plain silly names which were popular at the time of their birth. Well, I pretty much hated my frist name for the first 23 years of my life. My first name is Brandi. It would have been Brandy, just like the song by looking glass, has my mother not previously had a cockerspaniel that she gave that spelling to. She really loved that song. So, I was named after it (like tons of girls about 5 years prior to my being born) and my mother seemed to think it was the coolest thing ever. Actually, she still does.
I always thought there was something very cheerleader/sorority-y about that name and I really don't think I look or act like any other Brandy I've ever met. Not that there's anything wrong with being that way, but it ain't me, babe. No no no.
Anyway, I grew to like it. It's simple, and sounds sweet. And the song isn't the worst song ever, even if everytime I hear it I want to scream "Of course he left, IDIOT! That's what sailors DO!"
My second name is Michele. With one L. So here's the tally. Brandy with an I and Michelle with one L. Nobody ever spells it right. I love my middle name and have gone by it occasionally. I was given it after a very beautiful, loving and caring woman. She was my favorite aunt and my godmother. She's been dead for 16 years now. I'm her legacy, eh? Poor lady. No, I'm just kidding. I know she'd be proud of me.
My last name is a gift. It's a precious gift that I take very seriously. And that is part of the reason I didn't change my name when I got married. (the rest being that the combination of my name and my husband's name is ick) My dad, though there before I was born and married to my mother 3 months after I was born, is not my biological father. But I have never known that other man and honestly, no girl could have asked for a better father than the one who chose me. He didn't just raise me as a duty to my mother because he loved her, he loved me from the moment I was born and has never given me reason to doubt it. He is a very special man. I'm proud and honored to carry his family name.
And so, I'm a Brandi Michele Carson
A sweet after dinner drink

Yep, that's me.

I love my name as i honestly do not know anyone else called Alison.

Most of my friends have names which would be considered quite common (that sounds awful, sorry) or just plain silly names which were popular at the time of their birth. My aunty is called Alice and i was going to be called that but then it was adapted to Alison...i would have been happy with both names either way so it's all good:cool2:.

I like your name too--my sister is named Alison. :smile2: (We call her Al).

I like my name in general. It is a very common name, so in school distinctions often had to be made as to which "Jennifer" I was. Thank goodness I was the only Jennifer L.

My middle name has been handed down for 5 generations and I feel it is quite an honor to have the name and the spelling "Mae". Most people spell it incorrectly with a -y.

I have always preferred my married last name to my maiden name. Simply because it is "Jackson". Oh yes, "Sorry Mrs. Jackson OOOOOO, I am for reeeeal!" Just like the Outkast song! :)

I also like to be called Jen for short, NEVER Jenny! Unless it is my nephews calling me 'Aunt-Jennay' (They are from Alabama so they sound just like Forest Gump and it melts my heart to pieces!)

I'm ok with my name, it just wouldn't have been my choice. Jacquline is my name, but I have always went by Jacquie, middle name Dell, after an aunt, just kind of a bland name IMO, but my parents didn't ask for my opinion!

Well, I accepted my names. My first name is not too common here, and mom got it from a famous Italian singer in her days. Oh my… And the second name was a promise to Saint Elena. I rather would be Helena, but with my Italian family name… Elena was. The 2 names together remind me those Latin soap opera  (argggggggggggggggggghhhhh). And if you add the surname, oh my God, could it be less Italian? :glare: But I’m cool.
Of course everybody use only my first name. At my age I’ve made peace with the names issue.
How many of you think the name helps in part to form your personality? Have you ever read a book on names meaning? They are interesting.

My first name is common and plain, but I don't really mind it. There are 1,000 of "me" out there. There were at least 3 or 4 other people with same name in every class growing up (well, at least when I got to jr. high and beyond). My mom spruced my name up for me by saying it "smiled at you" when you wrote it. My last name is Sicilian, long, and mispronounced by everyone. My married name is short, Greek, and again, mispronounced by everyone.

But alas, I can not share any of my names because then I will cease to be "Perse Jr.," and I prefer that name for the time being.

I have an uncommon first name, which I hated as a child (I could never find my name on personalized pencils). As I get older, I like it.

The problem, however, is my married name. It is a Cajun french last name, full of vowels, and difficult to pronounce even for the locals. Together with my unusual first name, it has a sing-song quality that usually amuses everyone but me.

My name is Nathalie. I like it because I'm named after my grandmother, who through circumstances ended up taking care of me until I was 15.
I'm proud of having her name.

My mother also told me what name she wanted to give me if I would have been a boy. Rory. I Like that also. Maybe an idea for my alter ego. :grinning:

Funnily enough I always wanted to be a Jennifer when younger. Now I have learned to like my name because my father named me just before he died shortly after my birth, it is a kind of connection to him. Its a good celtic name common in Scotland but when growing up in England I wanted a more usual name.

My name became a bit more problematic when I got married. The potential problem was brought to my attention by my step daughter. We used to encourage her to see who the mail was for to help with reading. Think about how young children say their letters. She came for the letter box declaring loudly that there was 2 letters for Su King and one letter for Fu King:eek2:

I love my names, always have. My last name seemed to give people difficulty, but I really enjoyed correcting them. When I got older and found the meaning of my names I loved them even more. While I don't feel comfortable sharing my full real name, I will share some of the meanings. Even though I am a girl, the meaning of my first name is taken from the male form of the name and it means virile; my second name means divine woman; and finally my last name means keeper of the watch. Of course the meaning had nothing to do with my receipt of the names. Last name I got because it's my daddy's sir name. My first name is a girls version of my daddy's first name. And I got my middle name from my older sister who insisted on my mother having a sister (when she was told a baby was on the way - I was actually threatened to be put back if i was a boy by her speaking into my mom's mouth while mommy was pregnant with me) and the name had to be the same as her best friend's older sister who always took care of my sister in the neighborhood.

So years ago, my boss shortend it to Dee. Everyone calls me Dee but MY immediate family and they tried to start calling me Dee. I stopped them really quickly. i like my name since it's not common as a first name. sadly i was named after my mom's old boyfriend. usually i'll go by Doug or Douggie depending on if there is already someone with the same name or nickname. i don't really like my middle name since that name to me is associated with idiotic oafs so i don't really use it unless i have to. my last name is unique too. it pretty much means one who frees. if i use an alias i'm going to combine my father's name with my grandma's name.
my sister was named after this nun my mom knew when she was a kid. people would ask her where denephew was because of her name. weirldly she doesn't have the same last name as me. she's not married or adopted, or a half-sister. her last name is gumenburg.

I have always been different from my peers. I was always taller that almost all of them. I had blazing red, curly hair - most of them had straight hair, and most were blonde or brunette. I loved to read - they did not. And then there was my name. I have never liked my name. It is not a common name, but most English speaking folks have heard it before, and may even have a friend, or know someone who has a friend, with my name.
Phyllis means foliage. The story is that a young woman stood on the shore as her lover sailed off to the Trojan war. When he did not return, she cried herself to death (or something like that) and the gods felt sorry for her, so they turned her into willow tree.
Isn't it ironic - I was also born on a Wednesday (child of woe) and I am a diagnosed depressive.

I didn't like my real name as I was growing up. I got used to it as I got older and grew to like it. When I was around 30 I was reading a friend's book on the meanings of names, and found my name. I'd tried looking it up before but never found it, just like I can never find it on those little silly things like key chains with names on them. I found that my name was ancient and meant a graceful, female warrior. I realized all I had to do was grow into it. Little did I know, I was named well. :cool2:

*sigh* I hate my first name. I hated it in conjunction with my maiden name, which was not the last name I was born with, and I hate it still for its "valley girl" connotation. My first name is Heather. (ugh. Mental picture of blond hair-flipping, gum-chomping ditz.) I was born Heather Catherine Burkhart, which was fine, but my mom got divorced and re-married and I ended up with the alliteration "Heather Horton" all through my growing-up years. (stop laughing...I can hear you) :oo:
I have taken my middle name and re-spelled it "Cathryn" and now that's what I go by. Or in its more familiar form, "Cat". Meow, baby.

yeah, sure, i like my name so much, JUDY seems to be a very cute name and sounds fab. i just don't know if anyone agrees. but i find it short, and simple. :grinning: just as Judy Garland. but hey, i don't know why i'd rather use the name Judia here, i guess it's just that i find it more woman and mature--just as what im trying to be right now. haha!

nonetheless, my second name is MARIE, which i don't usually make known to other people--it sounds so kind, and i don't like to be known as someone who is much like that. haha. because you know, your name is sometimes the first thing people know about you and what's next, they'll judge you through that--as simple as that. :grinning: agree?

I've never minded my given name, which I guess is kinda boring but it seems to suit me. I'm Laura. I know there are tons of Laura's around, but it still seems like a moderately cool name. Apparently I was almost named Page, and that would have been cool. Middle name is Marie, which I only heard when in trouble. I like my grandmothers names, both of them. One was Grace and the other is Trecia. My mom is Gretchen and thats a cool name. My sister is Melanie and I hardly ever meet any other Melanie's. Of course I used to wish I was named Roxanne or Jasmine, something really powerful like that.

I dont mind my first name (angela) but god help anyone who shortens it to Angie. I am most definately *not* an Angie.

I've always had this kind of vague feeling however that i've got the wrong name. Like it doesn't quite suit me. i don think i'm an angela. i dont know what my name should be but when i look in the mirror and i say Angela...it doesn't seem to fit somehow.

That's weird - cos I'm an Angie and most definitely not an Angela. i don't mind my name, although I always wanted a middle name when I was younger, cos all my friends had them - I have a vague recollection of being asked once what my middle name was (think I was about 9 at the time) and I grasped around in my mind desperately trying to think of a name, I looked around and saw a box of Lyon's cakes on a shelf and told them my middle name was Lyon! ha, what an idiot!
I like nice, traditional names - I named my daughters Hannah and Rebecca and I think they like their names too, although Rebecca is known as 'Bex' to her friends and some even shorten Hannah's to 'H' - tsk, such a lazy society!

I hated my name growing up. People could really find ways to make fun of a chubby girled named after a mountain! I used to tell people that would make fun of me that my parents owned Shasta Cola and I was really rich. That typically shut them up. As I get older I love it more and more. Especially after marrying a Jason! Too many Jason's!!!!

I still get a lot of "like the soda" comments but sometimes I am pleasantly surprised with a "like the lake?" or a "like the mountain?" and even once a "like the daisy?" That was a good one.

And of course, at bars, while I am buying a drink and my husband's not on my arm because he's on stage I get a lot of "What flavor are you? Cherry?" But now, instead of hating my name I just hate those people.

I went to school with a girl named Veronique. She hated her name, and had it changed in our junior year to "Wendy," because (she said) "All Wendys are pretty." Poor thing. I think she expected to become pretty and popular overnight, and when she didn't she decided that her nose was the problem. After getting her nose fixed in our senior year, and still not being popular, she made the decision to dress like a ho and sleep around. Bingo!

I like my first name. Brian means something like 'Hill' or 'Noble', I like that :). It's only too bad it forms an alliteration with my last name (which means something as well, but I'm not going to tell that :)).
The only problem with it is that nobody here seems to be able to spell it correctly. It becomes either Brain (and that happens a lot) or Bryan or something like that. Pronouncing it correctly is apparently difficult as well for the Dutch. It tends to be spoken with an American 'r', or phonetically. But I learned to live with it. At least I have the same name as one of the best comedies ever made: Monty Python's Life of Brian :D.

I don't mind my first name, but I changed my middle and last name. My last name was Smith =/ It gets tiring having people ask you your last name, and then your first name, and then your middle name, and then your birthday before they can find you in their computers or lists or whathaveyou. There was another girl with my same name just in my freshman class at college. That's ridiculous.

Actually, when I moved and had to change high schools, in my Physics class, I sat next to a Smith and in front of a girl with my same first and middle name. The poor instructor was so confused. I had enough. So when I turned 18 I changed my middle and last name. My last is now O'Hara :D

Well, I do like my name, coz it`s the name my dad gave me and I would not want it any other way, but it gives me problems in my life like mothing else..

Srbo ( prounacend just like that, just read it, even though on this continet people assume that there should be a "e" or "i" between S and R...so Serbo or Sirbo ) is just the short verison of Serbian.
Like America Ferrera for American.

Ever since the war there started, and even before that, and even after that, even now, I have a hard time explaining to anyone from the Balkans that that is my real name.
So, so many times, I would meet somebody, he might be of muslem religion from Bosnia, or a Croat from Croatia, I would extend my hand, say my name and people would refuse to shake hands with me.
They think that I`m lying ( coz it really isn`t a common name ), that I`m a super ultra nacionalist ( which I`m not ) who`s lying about his name just to rub it into their faces.
Like I know if they are this or that when we first meet, I have no idea at all who they are and am not interested either...
And I have a hell of a lot of trouble explaining to people that i don`t give a rats a** what religion they are, what they believe in and so on, you get my drift, right ?
Sometimes it works out, most of the time it doesn`t, no matter what I say to them.
I wish with all my heart that that madness ends once...

And of course, living in Canada, having to spell it every single time to everybody...
Man, I like my name, but it`s really, really a big PITA.

Just to try a better explanation:

If you guys meet somebody, anybody, and he tells you : "Hi, my name is Ossama ...or Saddam..."...you would feel at least a little bit akward.

Well, that`s the reaction I`m getting nine out of ten times when I say my name to people from the old country......

And that`s why I said in some other thread:

Call me The Dude. :biggrin2:

I don't like my first name, or any of the multitude of nicknames that come from it, very much. "Patricia" just doesn't fit me very well for some reason. I go by "Pattie" most of the time, but eh...it still doesn't quite fit. I'll blame it on the fact that my dad picked it, lol.

Sometimes I forget my own middle name. Is that bad? Hehehe. No, I remember it...it just bothers me that I share it with so many other people!

I like my last name, though. Easy to spell, easy to pronounce...fantastic!
