I haven't been to Bean-Town for ages. We keep talking about going over to Wells or Bangor, and taking the Bangor-Aroostook train down for a day trip to go run around Boston, without having cars to worry about. A couple friends of mine who I was close to back in highschool or earlier, live down in that area now, so I know a little couch-surfing is an option, and I've never been to the Boston Museum of Science, or the Boston Aquarium, or even an Imax for that matter, and that was kinda the plan we were talking about for making it down there.
Sooo... Stephen King still does book signings? What exactly does a book signing consist of?
Do ya wait in line, get up to King and have 30 or so seconds to hand him the book, and ask what you want him to write on it or something? (or does he just sign his name?) And does it cost anything? Is there any special event that goes along with the signings? I know he did book signings in the past when he released new novels. Is there any occasion for the Nov. 7'th one, or any signing he would be scheduled for, for that matter?
I was thinking of selling my Cycle of the Werewolf King/Wrightson portfolio, but if I could get some extra, maybe personal, King ink on it... Like, maybe on the first edition hardcover I have that came with the portfolio... I'd almost be up for makin it to this kinda scene.
What do signings consist of, and how hard are they to get into? I'd hate to make a day-trip out of Bean-Town with the idea of picking up some ink, just to hear something at the door like "'The first 100 walk-ins have already got their book signed, you're too late, but thank you for your interest in King. Goodbye."
How do they work?

There is bus service, but there's no passenger train to Boston from Bangor.
A typical book signing consists of a long line of people waiting for Steve to sign their one or two books (that's the maximum allowed to give more people a chance). He signs his name and, if that's what the person wants, will personalize it to them. Also, it's usually required that one of the two books be purchased at the event as it's purpose is for the book store to be selling his most recent release. Sometimes there will also be a reading as part of the event. Not all people who attend larger events would be able to get a book signed as the time is limited to two hours--that's about as long as Steve is able to handle sitting and signing his name. How the local venue handles that is left up to them. That is not necessarily how this event will be handled but I'm answering your question in general terms.

Good question! I share your concern bout it! Anyone to explain? :wink2::biggrin2: Anyway, I don't worry much about this because I have never been in one, and I don't think that I will be in one any soon. But, you know, just curiosity.

Okay, thanks Ms. Mod, that answers my questions quite well. To be quite honest, I wouldn't want to be the cause of him having to suffer through two hours of signing stuff. Hell, I hate to use pens and pencils at all myself, I hold them too tightly and it makes my hand sore. Not to mention I despise needing to be social. I'm alot like the lead singer of Breaking Benjamin... that guy can't even go out in public he's got such a social anxiety disorder. I need to trick my brain into thinking it's business to even be able to talk to most people in real-world social situations.
But thanks! You answered everything just how I needed. And yeah, it's a bus down to Wells, then you can take the train to Boston, I believe. The last I knew it was like $30 bux for a round trip ticket, per person. We were thinking of hitting up a good planetarium or somethin, cause there's so little for techno-science gathering areas in this area. Yay for an Imax coming to Saco at least. And Funtown still has an arcade too. ;0)

Is this the rescheduled event with Grisham and others..or is this something different...and is it on Nov 7th
We will be making a formal announcement in September when the local venue is ready to do so, but it is not part of the Tom Allen event originally scheduled for this past June.

Well, here goes nuthin', waiting anxiously for the 15th!
Y'know, one of these days I should write a story about my 18 years of pure failure to meet this man. I mean, I've spent hours in lines, chased his car on foot in NYC (I was the kid in '90 shouting "nooooooo!"...if the woman who was working on the Rage screenplay is out there, yes you were amazingly hot and sadly it never would've worked between us), missed him by literally seconds as I went into a bathroom after the VT reading (my wife is still kicking herself for being tongue-tied, she was right there and watched him walk past while she made some kind of "ugk-ugk" sound trying to process the right words), tracked down and eaten at a burger joint that he frequents hoping he'd come in (damn fine cheeseburgers, btw), nearly died because he happened to be leaving his hotel while my wife and I were driving into an adjacent roundabout (not our finest hour, I assure you. Not to mention *we* wanted to stay at that hotel...all rooms booked, my behind), etc. etc. etc.. Don't ask me about the recent DC thing (where I live). Why the Examiner even bothered to advertise it (the day before it happened! Argh!), I don't know. I guess they felt I needed a kick in the nuts. Heck, if I were a lesser person I could've camped on his doorstep at a time when I knew for a fact he was home (the NO TRESPASSING sign on the road was just something I couldn't mess with. Sat there in the car, thought about it, been absorbing his work since I was eight. But it just wouldn't be cool to do that. It'd be crossing way too far into psycho-curseword territory against another human being and that's just not worth it).
You know what the irony is? At that VT reading, he opened the floor for questions. My wife and I elbowed each other for the duration, trying to get each other to ask the question we'd worked out on the long drive there. Neither one of us had the guts to actually stand up and ask him (like, IN PERSON OMG !!!1!!1!11) the question, and just sat there like doped-up schoolchildren, twitching at each other, while people around us asked him things like "where do you get your ideas?" *sigh*
There's a certain steakhouse in VT with two forehead imprints in one of the tables, to this very day. Eventually we'll be taking our grandkids there to see the dents.
So, Mr. King, if you're reading this, I'll be the guy with the really wide eyes who walks into the door on his way out of the room, after saying nothing but "aghuag" as I thrust a copy of The Mist at ya. *wince* You can probably spot me by following the paramedics. Oh, and if anyone cares, the question was about how he came up with the language for Mid-World (e.g. "Sai"), and whether there was a system (e.g. phonic, symbolic) or some designed meaning behind all of it.
Anyway, here goes nuthin'. Again :)

I've changed the thread title as I wasn't paying attention earlier to the date. It will be November 6th not the 7th. We had received word last week that the announcement would be made today and had sent out an email blast this morning accordingly only to learn that the local venue had changed the press release date to the 17th. I'm currently awaiting word as to whether we can announce this on Steve's site as the link they provided for details may not be working yet.

I'll buy a ticket to this one if I can. I'd love to shake that cats hand. I want him to sign Cell, and he can write whatever he wants in it. Plus, I bet the vibe at one of these things is just right. I'll keep my ears on for it.

I'm the one who does the copy for the newsletter, so it's the same announcement which I've just put in the MB News section. :smile2:

No, we've already sent it out, but the information was about the interview Steve did for N (Jordan is working on adding that to the Home page, but here's the link (http://www.simonsays.com/specials/stephen-king-nishere/?wsref=3&num=605)) and the announcement of the signing (http://www.odysseybks.com/kingrusso.html) which I've also posted in the News section of the MB.

LOL! not quite knee deep in snow in october. sometimes we dont get snow until january even. but it does get cold.
Salem in October is a fun place for wiccan festivals and marketplaces as well as the haunted houses. You should also check it out other times for the historical attractions. its a lot of fun.
I will be buying my ticket for the Hadley signing! cant wait! I do hope I can get one of the limited 125.00 tickets. there was a similar even in Vermont and it was the best signing I have been to yet.
