View Full Version : Where Do You Read At?

I usually read on my bed or in my computer chair leaned back.
I don't usually read out and about, but when I was reading the stand, I was home sick (yeah... I know, coincidence huh?) and took it to the doctor's waiting room. It was very strange to read the beginning when everyone around you is coughing. :grinning:

I choose to read in bed. I have to in order to wind down for the evening to go to sleep. Odd isn't it that I would need the stories of a horror writer to be able to sleep.

In bed or in a chair is the usual place for me, but I also do a lot of reading in the canteen at work - and also in the printroom where I'm supposed to be working!

Yeah, reading The Stand and then hearing someone cough kind of freaked me out for awhile also.
I do most of my reading on the bus, but also while waiting for anything. It makes the time fly by!

heh. yeah I could see the Stand being pretty freaky in a Dr's office.
I read mostly in bed now, but when I was a kid my favorite reading spot was the big maple in the front yard. I could straddle a branch and sit up there for hours. Now I just get a sore butt when I do that.

What a great question. It would be rather interesting to see where people get their reading done.
I usually read in bed, at the library or in a cafe.
Reading in bed gives me the most lucid visualization possible (most of my biographical or fantasy/science-fiction reading is done here); the library works well if people aren't sleeping next to me on the couches...snoring (yes, people do that at my university's library); cafe's are usually the worst place due to music being played and people chatting (Seattle's Best, Starbucks), but I can get a majority of my magazine or scholarly reading done there.

YEPPIR, YEPPIR...anytime there is a lull when no one wants my attention, out comes the book. I read in every room of the house.
I had a secretary once who kept a paperback open in between her computer screen and her keyboard. I remember thinking how can she do her work and read a novel too? But every day I would check the pages to see if she was reading. And by golly she was doing both????????? She would also read while driving to work!!!!!!!!! I was very grateful that we drove different routes.
I have seen people on I-75 on their way to work reading the newspaper, talking on the phone and shaving going 75-80 miles an hour. Puts the fear of God into you, believe me.

I read anywhere and everywhere. Even in the car despite getting a headache eventually, that's how much I like reading.
Although it would be cool to have a special place to read, it would probably help me get more into reading if I did.

I read in all the usual places: bed, while commuting on the train to work, my den, on the (ahem) toilet, doctor's waiting room etc. Anywhere that I can sit down, basically and where my 2 year old and 5 year old can't find me and harass me.

Wake up. Read while waiting for coffee to brew. Read while eating breakfast. On the toilet. While brushing teeth. While bathing. While blow drying hair (with bottle of lotion holding the pages open). Eating lunch. In line to pick up daughter from summer camp. Waiting for water to boil for pasta or rice. If I'm making a roux, I've got a good 30-40 minutes to read. I don't read during dinner, because it's the only time of day I've got daughter and hubby together at same time. Then, I read a little before bed.

I read in bed before I go to sleep. I have a chair that sits by a furnace vent, so I like to read there in winter when the furnace kicks in. Hollywood style bubble baths with lots of foam are a great place to read. I read while I am cooking things that require a lot of boring stirring. I take a book to the farmer's market sometimes in winter because there are fewer customers and I have time to kill. I used to read on the front steps in summer, but now I don't. I should start doing that again when the front steps are in shade.
Whenever I can and where ever I can, as a rule.

Anywhere I can!
I do a lot of reading in the tub, that's fun but I only do that with my own books because the pages tend to get wrinkly.
I read every night in bed. I can't go to sleep if I don't read for a while first. My husband is usually asleep when (or before) his head hits the pillow, so he doesn't mind if I have the light on for a while.
I'm glad to see so many people admit to reading on the toilet. Man, that's prime sitting time, can't let that go to waste! When all of the kids in my circle of friends were little, we had a book club. Because we all had littles, people would always ask how we found time to finish a book each month...and we were honest about the fact that most of us were reading in snippets while locked in the john! So, we jokingly called our group, "The Ring Butt Club." :)

In bed, at the beach, at the top of a mountain, in the bathroom (I also read the writings in the walls of public ones), walking, eating, while playing chess (when the opponent is slow), while cooking, etc. But right know I prefer big fonts to read than little ones. Sometimes I would like to get lost in a lonely island and read there.

I read out by my pool a lot in my Adirondack chair. I also read in my hot tub. I read on a little couch in my "man town" basement. I read in bed too. But one of my favorite places to read is on the airplane. I get so bored otherwise. For some reason I read at twice the pace on an airplane??? Must be the altitude. :biggrin2:

Yeah, I loved reading on flights... its really awesome to finish a book in 1 sitting. It feels rewarding, don't ask me why ,but its to bad that I don't fly more often. The only flight I have taken in the last 2 years took 12 hours, and thats not counting the connecting flights. :eyebrow:

Great question. I'm usually too busy during the day to get any reading done so the only chance i get is in the evening. I usually save it for bed. The only problem is though, that i so easily lose track of time and it's not unusual for me to check the clock and its like 3.00 a.m. or thereabouts.

My commute on the bus/light rail is at least an hour each way so that is where I do most of my reading. I even read at the various stops while waiting to transfer from one to the other.
Because I read so fast, I try very hard to limit my reading to my commute. I can spend a fortune easily on books even with the constant rereading of my SK's. I love to buy books even more than I like to buy shoes which says a lot.
When I do read at home, it is always while curled up on the sofa with the cat.

I tend to read all over the place... bed, couch, la-z-boy, dining table, my desk @ work, toilet.
Sometimes I read in my backyard laying out in the grass catching some sun, and sometimes I sit on my front porch and read and watch the street. I try to keep the outside reading to a minimum though, because I enjoy it the most and feels like extra relaxation when I do that.
I used to like to drive to the park to read where I used to play as a kid but I'm starting to get old enough where I don't want parents looking at me as the strange weird guy hanging at the park by himself.

Always have a book in my bag - can be quite heavy when you are reading the big hardbacks! I read everywhere I possibly can! My husband always asks me even on a trip to the supermarket if there is any point taking my book - but you never know!! hee hee - I'd be so mad if I had had a golden chance to read and then didn't have my precious book! However mostly once the kids are in bed - and the work is done for the day - snuggle down and read in bed.

Nah, it's fine. There are no rules for our language, despite the claims of prescriptivists who, in their heart of hearts, would really much rather be speaking Latin than English. A language is defined by how it is actually used by those who speak it.
Any jr. high or high school kids reading this should locate the nearest English teacher and tell them that Unca Sepia said so.
As to where I read... everywhere. Including places I oughtn't.
I was covertly reading a Stephen King book during classtime while I was in the Navy. The instructor was saying something or other about how nuclear fuel could kill you, something, something, blah blah blah.
I read a passage--I don't recall which book it was--about a fellow having a proctological examination. One sentence said something like "...unless the doctor gloves up and decides to go prospecting.
That turn of phrase took me by surprise and struck me as unimaginably funny. I had forgotten where I was and what I was supposed to be doing, and I let out a loud, screeching "HA!"... then I realized that thirty people were looking at me, including the instructor. I got to scrub toilets that night.
Mr. King, you are a bad influence!

My favorite place to read is on the couch, curled up, with a well-stocked kitchen nearby. When the story gets intense, I sit up and cross my legs because . . . because I'm weird, I guess.

For most of my life, I read stretched out on the bed. Especially at bedtime. Nowadays it's done on the couch while my daughter plays on the floor in front of me and I'm lucky to get more than a few pages at a time ;)

I love to read outside on my front porch, weather permitting. But at night I'll be on the couch and at bedtime in bed. There's nothing better when you're home sick to stay in bed with a good book, sleeping and reading...

I read in numerous places, my bed, chair in living room, couch and in class (shhh). Basically anywhere will do for me, unless people around me are distracting or bothering me then it's hard.

I love reading SK books when I'm travelling.
I was reading Salem's Lot (scariest book for me ever!) in a basement room of a hostel in Tokyo. I was alone and there was a blackout whilst I was reading about Ben going to the Marsden House.
My imagination is pretty vivid anyway, but I was sure I was going to die of fright before anything 'got me' first :biggrin2:

I generally carry a book with me everywhere - it's amazing where you find places to read. I can always manage to get a few pages in when I'm in line at the post office, or waiting for my car to be washed - that, and the usual selection of magazines in typical waiting areas are horrible 99% of the time.
My favorites are a comfy chair in the livingroom or out on my deck when the weather is nice.

The ideal place for me to read is my basement office I just created. That way, nobody can come down and bother me. It's too easy to startle a person when they are deeply engrossed in a King novel, and that scares me more than any of the Master's books.

well, books travel with me so anywhere is a good answer for me. in the bathroom, in bed, while I walk (minding, of course, traffic and other obstacles) if I know I am walking a long ways and while I travel, always take a book! sure the scenery out a greyhound window is picturesque but theres only so much scrublands and flatbrush you can observe before it makes you feel a little bushwhacked. :P
in fact of the 48,000 miles I have travelled by bus (no folks thats not a typo, thats forty-eight thousand) most of them saw me with a book as a companion. :)
so, I guess my final answer is on the bus.

I often read before I go to bed at night to help me wind down. Sometimes I even read until I'm almost falling asleep. The lines begin to blur and run together and I read a paragraph 5 times and still don't know what it said. I have issues putting a book down unless I'm at the end of a chapter or there's a break written in. Sometimes I force myself to stay awake just so I can read until the next break, even if I'm tired.
I always bring a book with me wherever I go, whether it's school, my parents, the mall, it doesn't matter because you never know when you're going to be able to steal a few more moments with a book.

That was perfect reading it in the doctors office...I try to take a book with me virtually everywhere. If I could I would read at work. I was considering getting one of those virtual book readers that amazon sells for the simple fact that no one would know what it was and would not question what I was doing (looks technical and he is concentrating hard lets leave him alone LOL)

I was just curious.
I have been reading the complete/uncut hardcover edition of The Stand recently, and it is quite big and heavy!
typically, I read before bed, under the covers, or else I will carry a book around with me and read it when I have time in waiting rooms, etc.
However, the hardcover version of the Stand is so heavy I cannot carry it around, and it is hard for me to even read it in bed!! I can't find a position to get comfy!
Where, when and how do most of you read?
Have you ever had any of these book troubles I'm having now??
Ubasti

For books like The Stand, the paper back edition might be best to tote around. I try to always have a book with me at my second job since we never know if we'll be busy or not. That seems to be where I get the majority of my reading done since I don't have much spare time during the week.

When I was in Alaska last year, my parents built a red swing right out behind our house. Since my return I've found that swing the most relaxing place to read. Sometimes the bed can be too relaxing.
For some reason (not all the time though) I'm put off by having other people in the room. Just recently I was at the dentist and was reading in the waiting room. Everything was fine until more people showed up, then some started talking on their cell phones, then someone turned on the television...Luckily I did not have to wait long.

lying on the sofa is my favourite place, but in bed is good too, or just sitting on a confortable couch or chair. In winter I use to read near the stove, but not on a chair, just standing with my hand close to the stove, because I suffer the cold too much and I just love being close to fireplaces, stoves..
I take a book to everywhere I go, but only once I read Lisey`s story while I was waiting to see the doctor and that time he didn`t make me wait much (the other times I had had to wait him during hours and I didn`t have a book!)... once I even took a book to read at school!

I've tried it a couple of times. I found what works for me is to have my ears plugged. The last time I read at the gym I had my ear buds (the kind that take shape of your ear canal) in and it canceled out the noise fairly well.
Also the type of exercise plays a part as well. I can cycle and read, walk and read, but not jog.

As for me, I have this wonderfully soothing glider chair with big poofy cushions. That is where 99.9% of my reading takes place. I have a floorlamp behind the chair that gives just enough light to read by but isn't overly glaring.

If its school stuff, I read on the grass outside.
If its entertainment, I read anywhere. I just listen to it on my Ipod.
While eating, while walking from class to class... verry convient.
And reading and listening to a story lights up the same parts of your brain.
And while the smell of an old book is nice. So is the smell of the wind.

I usually get a majority of my reading done at school, since I always finish my work quickly and have plenty of free time. At least an hour a day, and that's not counting lunch, which is basically a giant time gap which needs to be filled. I also listen to alot of podcast novels (Scott Sigler's my favorite podcast author) mainly on my iPod when I'm about to drift off to sleep.

I usually read on my bed or in my computer chair leaned back.
I don't usually read out and about, but when I was reading the stand, I was home sick (yeah... I know, coincidence huh?) and took it to the doctor's waiting room. It was very strange to read the beginning when everyone around you is coughing. :grinning:
Im glad you asked that. My fave place is on my deck on a perfect Spring day with the sound of the stream rushing by.

I do have to read before I go to sleep. But, I really read anytime and anywhere. My current book is always with me. When I was a kid I used to have 3 books going at the same time. 1 at home, 1 for on the bus, and 1 at school.

I love to curl my body up into a ball and read on the couch, or laying down on my stomach in my bed with pillows underneath me for comfort. I read on the bus and in the car even though I sometimes get a headache sometimes if I read to long. I read in my study hall as well, but I had to stop for a few days because I was reading the Stand and I fell asleep becasue I dodn't get a lot of sleep the night before (was up reading). Someone behind me coughed really loudly, which was enough to wake me up and cause me to jump out of my skin screaming that Captin Tripps was real. Everyone else thought it was funny.
