Does anyone have any idea what this film about? Is this the novel that was originally called "Cannibals" ? Is it about cannibals? (I hope so!)

Thanks for the help!

I'm assuming you meant to ask what the book is about as it isn't a film. You can read Steve's response on page 6, Post 60 in this thread.

So, yeah I found this info on Wikipedia about what Stephen King is currently working on, a book entitled Under the Dome.

"Under the Dome is a novel currently being written by Stephen King. It is a rewrite of a novel King attempted writing twice in the 1980s, under the titles The Cannibals and Under the Dome. [1] As King stated on his official site, these two unfinished works "were two very different attempts to utilize the same idea, which concerns itself with how people behave when they are cut off from the society they've always belonged to. Also, my memory of The Cannibals is that it, like Needful Things, was a kind of social comedy. The new Under the Dome is played dead straight." King read from his new first draft at "The Three Kings" reading event that was held on April 4, 2008 at the Library of Congress, which was broadcast by C-SPAN as part of their Book TV series on May 4, 2008. King described the novel as "very, very long," saying "I tried [writing] this once before when I was a lot younger, and the project was just too big for me." The Novel has been compared to "The Stand" And "It" in length. [2]"

Anyone seen anything interesting on this new project?

That's about as much information as has been made public so far. Steve has wanted to keep details to himself until the novel is closer to publication. He's still working on it and it's now well over 1,100 manuscript pages long; he's thinking it will probably be at least 1,800 before he's done but that's as much as I am at liberty to tell you. :zip:

Depends on what size font they use :smile2: but that's probably about right. Please also keep in mind that this is the first draft, so there will be editing and that rarely makes the book longer.

Yes, I've read The Dark Tower but didn't start until after W&G was published. I told Steve there was no way I was going to start it until he got them off that train! Having a book dedicated to you makes you a little more motivated to read it, though. :smile2:

I didn't read Duma Key until we got the Advance Reader Copies, John. I'm not much of a re-reader and know that they go through from 3-4 revisions once the editing process starts so would rather wait until it's done instead of reading each one. Too many other books to read and things to do. Once it gets to the ARC stage, I figure it's fairly safe.

i think the novel title isn't metaphorical at all but think it just literally means the story is about under a dome. the woodchuck and plane could of both been cut as the dome was being formed. and the book's past title being called the cannibals makes me think that their isolated and resorting to extreme measures.

I asked Steve if he would give me a synopsis to post but he says he's not ready to release any information just yet. I mentioned the Simpsons episode but he hasn't seen that so can't say if it's anything like his book, but also mentioned that the seed of the idea for his story was planted a long time ago--long before the Simpsons episode. He said to compare different pieces of work to snowflakes--they may all be snowflakes, but they're each unique.

The manuscript is 1500 pages--that's single-sided, double-spaced, so the finished volume will be closer to 1000 or so depending upon font size/style and how much editing is done. Still a very long book but don't be expecting 1500 pages in the final print version.

I can't wait! Judging from IT, King is one of the rare authors who can write a major piece that goes beyond 1,000 pages and never have that piece feel bloated. I am really pumped for this epic. I would think that the latter would get even more second looks in the bookstore with Stephen King's name on the dustcover. Also, I would love to see them go back to a dustcover style similar to 'IT' and 'Misery'.

No, it's not going to get changed to that title. The work that he originally started with that title (The Cannibals) many, many years ago is not the same plot as Under the Dome and it might confuse fans who are aware of the former one.

Speaking of dustcovers, how much say does SK have into the covers? Does he have the power to veto a cover if he doesn't like it, or is that the publisher's remit?

He has final approval but unless they do something that he absolutely hates, he usually goes with their suggestion.

That's the plot for The Cannibals but that's not what this is. It will probably end up being about the same length as The Stand and IT. I have it in bound galley format but that's a double spaced version so the page count would still be off.

Hi,

Indeed, books are printed and bound in multiples of 32 pages, including all material both before and after page numbering, so it could well be for mechanical reasons.

BTW That's what the legend often at the bottom in small caps, with the initials of the book and the number of the 32 page section refer to.

Off topic question(maybe). How many manuscript pages=actually pages in book( 1st/1st).

Bev Vincent
March 16th, 2009, 12:57 PM
There's no straightforward equation since it depends on font size, page layout, kerning and leading, amount of dialog vs. amount of narrative, number of chapters (hence more chapter headers), etc. In this case, about 1500 manuscript pages translated into about 1100 pages.

This may sound like a silly question, especially considering how much research I have conducted on publishing, but what exactly does a copy editor do? Is there some particular job description they have, anything in particular they look for? I've heard before that The Gunslinger was not copyedited originally. I've just wondered what that might mean.

I've asked him if I could post something but Steve doesn't want information given out yet about the plot.

now you can see it on the home page just in case you didnt already.

I'm the one who posted it after getting Steve's and Scribner's okay to do so, so yes I've seen it. :-)

Wow, it's scary and funny how much it's like the Simpsons Movie, situation and characters-wise. Some differences are that planes = sparrows and the gardener's hand = that guy who gets crushed :p It's even got the "politician who will stop at nothing—even murder" and "three brave kids" :biggrin2:

I'm really curious how Sai King will react when he finally sees the movie, surely it will be brought up by the press or in interviews for the book's promotion?

Remember though, that this novel was an idea that he had back in the 80s, way before the Simpson's movie. Also, I don't think it's fair to compare it to the Simpson's movie quite yet, not until we actually read the book.

Yeah, I couldn't help but immediately think of The Simpsons Movie after hearing the plot, but at the same time I am ecstatic! This sounds like it will be real good! I'm starting to read all of his books again to keep me busy until then.

I've read the book but haven't seen The Simpsons movie so don't know if it is actually close to that idea. To the best of my knowledge, he still hasn't seen the movie either. My guess is that Steve has put his own spin on the idea of a town being trapped under a dome.

Hi,

I think that's a kind of cosmic kaincidence personally.

Apart from being a heavy trip (to the copier) LOL

Could it be described as a 'weighty tome'?.

I'm reminded of what the English king said, one of the Georges portrayed in Blackadder, when confronted with Edward Gibbons 'Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire' - 'Scribble, scribble, scribble, Mr Gibbons, another damn fat book, eh? What,? What?'.

While the Simpson's movie did enter my mind, I think that this book will be much better than a cartoon movie. Don't get me wrong loved the Simpson's movie, but you can NEVER compare SK to the Simpsons. It is like comparing apples and trains. Nothing alike.:bat:

Under the Dome..Can't wait to read this book..just the idea of all that work, all those words, and Characters...just waiting to be discovered...Fast Forward to November!! Tell Mr. King to not ever give up on writing!! I am almost finished reading his Memoir of the Craft On Writing, and it has given me some hope and motivation. (I've checked out 3times from the Library, I have to read in increments..like when I'm on the toilet away from needy children) I'm so happy I registered for this site. Awesome!

thats weird. i had a the same idea for a book, but my idea was more science fiction than horror. My idea was of a world like in the stand, after the world has been through a nuclear war, and the people had to build a dome to keep out the radiation. More than one dome existed though. Each dome had its own ideas of morality and laws. Trade was done underground, which was exhausting, leading to the development of one dome to cover all the people. Once the world dome was created, the morality of each dome came together to cause horrirfic circumstances.

I wonder if Mr. King will tell the reader in the beginning the origins of the dome, or if it will remain a mystery until the end of the novel. Or maybe he'll leave it to our imaginations and won't tell us at all (like in Cell)? I'm looking forward to reading the book in Nov. and finding out.

I didn't read it until I got the bound manuscript because I knew it would be going through editing and especially with something that long wanted to wait so I wouldn't be reading it several times. Now the real question is whether I'll reread it when it comes out to see if any other changes were made--think I'll just ask first. :smile2:

I can't give you any specifics until after it comes out. All I can say is that it was a fast read even though I was reading it in copyeditor mode and that slowed me down a little. :smile2: Don't want that to sound pretentious--there is a professional copyeditor who did that for the publisher but they sometimes miss things so an extra pair of eyes doesn't hurt.

So Ms Mod... was it really good, how bad was the bad guy was it totally cool and up to 3 in the morning reading it good who won who fell in love did the guy you like a lot in the story survive or was he impaled on a telephone pole for the crows to pick at and for the love of God does the dog die and just how did it tie into the Dark Tower?

Ok, forget what I just said, sorry... stepped out side of my mind for a moment there. I'm all better now.

I've got it on advance order from Amazon and I'm waiting a little patiently.
The premise of the story sounds great, a lot can happen under a dome.... thanks for posting it and keeping us all updated. :smile2:

This may be a dumb question, but when King first envisioned this story, were his plans to publish it as a Bachman book (seeing how he described it as allegorical, and the other sort of allegorical books he published under Bachman--ie: Long Walk) or under his real name?

I have a question for the moderator who read the manuscript, I hope you can answer me: does the book connect itself with any previous Steve's book? If yes, can you tell what it/are it/they?

Hi

I just read the Plot Synopsis for Under the Dome.
It seems I remember reading a similar story a few years ago.

From what I rmember, it turned out that this town in th UK was whisked be into and had an invisible force field like an down, but was transported 40.000 years in the past.

It was a good read, but I hope this book will be better
I have been a fan of Mr. King's books for many years and hope he continues writing great stories

Cheers

It appears there are two versions of the dust jacket for the trade edition of Under the Dome. The first (and the one you see on eBay) has white lettering. The other has dark grey lettering. I visited my local Borders Express and they had both in approximately the same quantities.

i'm about 100 pages in –– having purchased the book last nite. And I must say, I'm impressed. I haven't read Mr. King devoutly for almost ten years. His writing is much better then it used to be ––– not that this was a hindrance to his best horror fiction ––– but it is good to know the dedicated can get better with time ––– something akin to wine, aaaaa! But bravo Mr. King ––– it is sailing along with a lot of heart, courage, and guts!

Regarding the two different colored variants of the trade edition. Is is possible that:

The white lettering is OUTSIDE the Dome, while the dirty grey is INSIDE the Dome?

Hi,

If my memory serves he said that Edgar is Abagail's great-grandson (might be missing a great) but that Abagail exists in the Standverse and Edgar has no knowledge of the connection.

I'm reading it now. I'm about 100 pgs in, and I've gotta say this is the best King book I've read in a while. I'm having a bit of trouble remembering some characters -- there's so many! :eek2: -- but I'm loving the story. Unlike a lot of recent King books I've read, this one started off fast and furious but didn't sacrifice character development. Loving the book so far, but I have about 900something pages to go, lol.

I finished it over the weekend and immediately went back to the beginning to read it again because I wasn't ready to be done. I don't know about you guys but I kept flipping back to the map to constantly get my bearings on where these people are in the story. I think the 2nd read will help me keep the characters a little straighter too.

Dear Uncle Steve,

Finished UTD this weekend. I tried to make it last, but couldn't put it down for that last five hours. I loved it. When a thousand-pager is that easy to read, you know there's magic. I thought the story was expertly crafted and sadly relevant. It's a fun read with, still, unmistakable gravity.

This is a scary book, and a few of these characters are your scariest. Generally speaking, I'm not an avid horror genre fan; I'm in the Constant Reader club because I love language and you're so great with it. I always relish going on vacation into your latest world, but, whew, I'm glad to be out of Chester's Mill! (I know I'll visit again, though.)

Thanks so much for the gift. And a very Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones.

Peace,

Carri

PS - I know the muse can't be cajoled, but I'd really like to know what became of Danny Torrance.

I did something I normally never do, I looked ahead to see if Barbie was still in the story... I know shame on me but that Jim Rennie makes me so mad!! And the worst of it is: He reminds me of my boss...The same dangerous kind of phoney guy!
