Just finished Duma Key, and I loved it! :wow:
If/when they make Duma Key (the movie), who would you like to see in the cast?
Personally, I kept seeing Terry O'Quinn as Edgar & Jeff Bridges (ala The Big Lebowski) as Wireman.
What do you think?:geek:

I like Jeff Bridges for Wireman.
Only other decent fit I can think of would be Rachel McAdams for Ilse.

Don't know Terry O'Quinn but Jeff Bridges would be perfect as Wireman.
Now Edgar, thats a hard one, will have to think more on that.
Hope others can come up with some good ones.

I really have no clue yet, and both characters really grab you, especially Wireman. I believe Wireman has to be the best character King has conjured up in quite awhile. Prank BTW, I'll keep on standing on my soap box until Hugh Laurie is cast as Roland, because he is Roland.

Tom Hanks as Edgar and that girl from Enchanted, Amy Adams, as his daughter who's name I can't remember right now. I like scorpion22's idea as Jeff Bridges for Wireman. And Marcia Gay Harden as Edgar's wife, and Michael Clark Duncan as the doctor.

i think an african american actor would make sense to play edgar as he is related to mother abegale,(the stand).james earl jones is definetly the right actor for kamen.

Yeah it was in another thread, apparently they are related but edgar is not aware of mother abegale and vice versa.
because they come from different universes, thestandverse and the dumakeyverse.
if every king novel was set in the same verse, then the world would already be in ruins from numerous things.

So funny, when reading the title, the first name that came to my mind was HANKS. The rest of your suggestions are right on. AWESOME lineup. Maybe you missed your true calling. Maybe you should be in LaLa land casting GOOD movies. H'wood could use A LOT OF HELP.
Where would you put Mr. King? Can't be a Stephen King book adaption if there is not a glimpse of our favorite storyteller????????????

Thanks Scorpion22, finally someone agrees!! :) And EBK357, I'm not joking, Hugh Laurie is one heck of an actor. In my mind's eye as I read the books I formed a picture of Roland and his tendencies. When I saw the first "House" episode, he looked very familiar. Strange, huh? It took awhile to hit me, but I finally realized when he has the 2-4 days growth of beard, he truly is Roland of Gilead. Even when clean shaven, he is Roland.
But I know everyone pictures characters differently when reading a book, that's the beauty of books over movies. I agree the casting in "The Green Mile" was the best yet, they nailed that one. But Hanks as Roland is quite a stretch, at least in my mind's eye. Prank

I see this casting:
Edgar: Hanks is all wrong for this part. I see William H. Macy for it. He plays such a good understated character that often seems to be seething rage underneath. Take a look at Boogies Nights, Fargo, and Mystery Men for some good character acting.
Wireman: Alfred Molina
Pam: Marsha Gay Harden
Ilse: Amy Adams
Kamen: James Earl Jones is an EXCELLENT choice!!!
Elizabeth: Dame Judi Dench

Now for Elizabeth...If only Katherine Hepburn was still with us. MAYBE they could use that new tech where they put old and gone actors in the scene and give them new script. 'Prolly not...Elizabeth is such a wonderful character (don't we all have or have had an Elizabeth in our lives). I'll have to think further on this one.
Don't go to the flicks often because H'wood sure can screw up a good story; I would really hate it if DUMA were to go to film and get all twisted. But can only hope, eh?

Love Cusack!, but he was just in King's 1408-but I see Edgar around that age, not as old as Tom or Gary Sinese.
Jeff Bridges would be great as Wireman-as mentioned- Like in The Big Lebrowski-a movie I never got into but that my husband loves.
Edgar, hmmmm, this may sound weird but maybe Rob Lowe- He has come a long way, I think he could pull it off, and add a little eye candy to the film.

Do y'all remember the whoohaa that ANN RICE raised when they were casting INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE? Tom Cruise was the movie moguls choice and Ann couldn't stand the idea. I remember thinking 'eeewww Cruise as Lestat no, no, no'!!!! Not many people thought he could come close to grasping the character and who better to know that than the creator of the character? She fought the good fight but in the end the moguls won out. And he pulled it off.
It's all in how we are perceived by others. Everyone has a different view.
That's one of the appeals of Mr. King's work, his complex characters. You either LOVE 'EM or HATE 'EM.

I'm trying to stick with the ages of the characters in giving ideas of actors to play the roles. Laura Linney is in her 40s and that would be well more than just ridiculous for her to play a 22 year old French student. Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine are pushing 70 if not in their 70s. Soooooooo to stick with the ages of the characters...here is an idea of who could pass as the characters. Oh and I never once thought of Edgar as an african american, although I did think Wireman as African American. Not in a stereo typical way, but his name is Jerome Wireman. Ok, here is my idea...
Edgar Freemantle-Vincent D'Onofrio: This guy is amazing and I have been impressed with evrything he has ever starred in and hes got the graying dark hair to authenticate the role
Pam Freemantle-Sally Field: I thought of Pam as a petit woman, as she feared that Edgar could/would strangle her with one arm.
Melinda/Linnie Freemantle-Eliza Dushku: Although Eliza is 28 years old, she could definitely pass for 22. I was thinking darker hair to go with the parents, remember these arre Minnesotans, not 'beach blonde' Floridians.
Ilse/Ily Freemantle-Arielle Kebbel: I just love this girl, she is the cutest little thing and when I picture Ilse in m head, I imagine a girl similar to Arielle.
Jack Cantoori-Cam Gigandet: bsolutely. He was the jerk in Never Back Down...he just screams beach boy
Jerome Wireman-Forest Whitaker: Amazing actor and age appropriate. And I shouldn't have to explain why I chose him, he is amazing.
Elizabeth Eastlake-Gena Rowlands: I just love her as an actress and I think shewould be great to play Elizabeth. And shes kind of age appropriate.
As far as the rest of the cast, that would take some more thinking. I could agree with the James Earl Jones being Dr. Kamen, but I was also thinking of the guy from Malcolm in the Middle, Gary Anthony Williams.

I don't know about the other characters, but from the very beginning, I kept seeing Nick Nolte in the role of Edgar. He's well known on film for being short tempered, and is exactly the kind of guy who should never in a million years become an accomplished painter--just like Edgar. Agree that Judy is a fabulous actress but I sort of saw Elizabeth as more "frail" than Judy........if Jessica Tandy was still alive she would be perfect for it!
Kamen - gosh Ive forgotten the actors name (the one in the lethal weapon movies with Mel Gibson.........anyone help!).......Danny Glover!!!

I'd have to go back to the original post, but I'd flip-flop them--Jeff Bridges as Edgar and Terry O'Quinn as Wireman. I can just see Bridges as the construction kind of guy turns to Mr. Arteeeest!
As far as Sai King, I see him as one of the other tenants on the Key or one of the patrons of the gallery. He likes to do those bit parts and really likes to play the somewhat obnoxious character. I can just see him being all "touristy" on the Duma Key beach!

I like the idea of Ryan Gosling as Jack, Marcia Gay Harden as Pam, and Rachel McAdams as Ilse. Also, what about James Earl Jones as Dr. Kamen? Uncle Stevie did say Dr. Kamen's voice was like Mr. Jones'.
I really like these choices:grinning:

Edgar- Ed Harris.(Or maybe I am just stuck on Pollack )
Wireman- Antonio Banderas is as good as any :)
Ilse- I am in agreement with Rachel McAdams.
Pam- Joely Richardson.
Kamen- Michael Clark Duncan.
Elizabeth- ???

Hi everyone- my first post. I'm currently re-reading Duma Key. I adore this novel. Whilst reading I visualise almost everything as a film, including characters- so in my head I also grant myself the liberty of casting regardless of age, or if the person is (gulp) alive or not.
This is what I had floating around my mind and try as I may, can't seem to shake:
Edgar: Thomas Jane (now I know he seems to be becoming a go-to guy with king adaptations, but I just think he embodies the everyday man, with the potential to be absolutley sweet, vulnerable and angry- all at the same time. I know he is a little young for the part, but ... liberties of imagining i guess)
Wireman: Michael Caine (i just think its a match made in heaven- ps- wireman is without a doubt one of the great king characters- ever!)
Elizabeth: Jessica Tanday all the way (god rest her soul), not only could she pull the warmth, but also the terror!
Jack: I could only see a slightly younger, ruffled haired Topher Grace (the guys just so sweet!)
More to come... in a rush at the moment.
But- the big one: who do you think should direct Duma Key???? I have an opinion but may see what others think first? (lets go living directors on this one).
Thanks!

i think john cusack could play edgar freemantle pretty well.
Itd be neat to have perse and edgar meet face to face in this possible movie to be,also who could play perse. My first thought for Edgar was Cusack (somehow probably due to being in 1408), and he'd be great in the role. I like Sinise in the role, too. I've always pictured Wireman as black, and my first thought for him was Morgan Freeman; though Jeff Bridges really is a great choice, as is Tommy Lee Jones. I agree about Sternhagen, too, but Dench is also a good choice. I like for Jack, not Luke but Owen Wilson, for some reason. Of course, Duncan or Jones fits for Kamen.
I love, I think, the idea of Perse appearing at some confrontational point in human form. I have to think about which actress would be appropriate for her.

I thought of Wireman as being tanned with long dark hair....I pictured him like Graham Greene.....(he was in Maverick w/Mel Gibson / James Garner / Jodi Foster)
As for Edgar, that's tough...perhaps Russell Crowe? I'm thinking age-wise.....Dr. Kaman is definately Michael Duncan Clark.

I've been thinking about who I would cast since I started reading the book! I definitely think Dennis Quaid for Edgar and Bruce Willis is perfect for Wireman. I like someone's idea from much earlier of Ryan Gossling as Jack.
Susan Sarandon as Pam
Michael Clarke Duncan as Kamen
I can't really think of anyone for Elizabeth...too bad Jessica Tandy isn't around anymore.
Even though I can't stand her, Jane Fonda might play a good Mary Ire.

For the first time when I read a novel I actually got a picture in my head of the actor who should be portraying him.
Alfred Molina should really play Wireman. He would be absolutely perfect for it.
For the other roles I don't really have a preference. Although Gena Rowlands would be great as Elizabeth, I have to agree. James Earl Jones as Dr. Kamen is an obvious choice, King clearly writes him as the actor. No doubt about it.

I agree with you on James Caan as Edgar. I kept picturing James Caan as Edgar while reading the book. I think its because Edgar was almost always in pain and in the movie "Misery" James Caan portrays pain very very well.:smile2: I guess while reading Duma Key I kept picturing Edgar as being older (like in his sixties) too.

ok though this is my first post on this site I am a King addict atm. I read Duma Key a while back and loved it, now I am listening to the audio book and loving it more. Everyone's ideas are awesome but I am going to try and be daring and add my 2 cents to the mix.
For some reason I came to the choice for Wireman first. And oddly enough the actor I am thinking about isn't just for his acting skill. I think Ron Perlman would make an awesome Jerome Wireman. From descriptions I have recently heard Wireman is a fairly large man. I think Perlman fits the bill there and have him spouting spanish here and there would maybe not suit Perlman perfectly but I think it would be an amazing fit for Wireman.
As for Edgar and possibly the most important part in the movie aside from Wireman and young Elisebeth.

ok I kinda cut my last post in half there without meaning to which is an awesome omen considering it was my first post here ever..... anyways. About Edgar and who would play him. I have a weird idea but I think someone already suggested him for the role of Wireman but anyways. I think Gary Busey would be a good fit for Edgar. I think he of all people could really do the intense anger of Edgar after his accident. I think he could also pull of the trance state that Edgar goes into to paint and make it VERY beleivable. Anyways I really hope I can become a regular here as I really enjoy Mr.Kings work and I would be honored to have discussions with all of you. Anyways though I know people have discussed who will play the older Elizibeth but what about a discussion about who will play the younger version? (God I hope they have the "How to Draw a Picture" flashbacks in any movie they make. ) and this is just going out to there to everyone who enjoyed the book. Is there any chance we can start some sort of movement to get this made into a movie? This could be the most amazing Pychological Horror movie I have seen in 10 years and its so different from all the other cookie cutter horror movies out right now. Also I need something to tide me over until the JJ Abrams adaptation of "The Dark Tower " gets made and released.....

I had 2 characters distinctly stand out in my mind while reading this.
1. Gena Rowlands for Elizabeth - My mind instantly went to her character from Skeleton Key
2. My mind pictured Scatman Crouthers as Wireman for some reason. Obviously not possible, but I love Jeff Fahey on Lost and think he'd be a great choice.
I am still up in the air about Edgar, but I think I like William H Macy or Kevin Spacey most. Edgar will require a very good actor to pull it off.

At last!
I have a co-visionary.
I have seen Edgar as Terry O'Quinn since I first started reading the book.
I love all the other suggestions for Wireman.
Forest Whitaker is my favorite, I know we would have to "race swap" there.
But they did it in "Shawshank" so they could do it with this story too.

Re Ilse...Why do you all keep picking actresses in their thirties to be Ilse? (Drew Barrymore, Amy Adams, Rachel McAdam, etc.). Ilse, as I recall, was only 18 or 19, so the actress couldn't be over 22 or so. I'd like to see an unknown cast in this role, there are lots of fresh young things out there now.
I pictured Morgan Freeman (Freeman-Freemantle, come on!) as Edgar, too. Although he might be getting a little old for the part now. I pictured Edgar to be around 55-60 (i.e. old enough to have daughters around 19-23, a long marriage and well-established business, but not quite the "retirement" age of 65) , and Mr. Freeman is over 70 now, I think.
And BIG thumbs up to the person who suggested Gena Rowlands (sp?) for the part of Elizabeth. She's got that combination of size and loss and the turn to ferocity that is PERFECT for the role!

Me too I think of Jack Nicholson for everything. Also a fanatic of Mr Jack. Each time I read a book and the face of the character doesn't quite settle in my mind, I just give him Jack's. You're right he's well hot. My dream fantazy would be that somewhere in a lab or something they cloned me a Jack at about the age he was in "One flew over..." so I totally see where you're coming from.

First, I want to say that duma key is one of the best, even the best, book I have ever read till now (my first Stephen King book)- so well done Stephen, and Stephen King is my favorite writer!
I'm not sure about all the characters but while reading the book i was sure that i really want Robert Downey JR to play wireman a movie for the book will come out. and I agree with people that Michael Clarke Duncan should play Edgar's doctor- Kamen. and i also half- agree with the user who said Tom Hanks should play Edgar.
read the book! recomended!

Well now...
It has been two years since this book was released, and I have yet to see any IMDB posts about an upcoming Duma Key film... I found this to be one of his best (if not his very best) novels to date. I think it's time somebody wrote a screenplay and started casting!
If I were in the casting chair, I would have to think about it for quite awhile before coming up with the cast, but I believe this is who I would end up choosing:
Elizabeth Eastlake: Cloris Leachman. She has been classically trained to play any role from comedic to dramatic. I can easily picture her filling Miss Eastlake's wheelchair-bound shoes, and being able to realistically portray her fits of Alzheimer's. A more perfect match for this role I challenge you to find.
Ilse Freemantle: Emma Roberts. Although Rachel McAdams and Amy Adams would make excellent choices if they were a few years younger, that is precisely their downfall. Miss Roberts is the perfect age, and has been able to demonstrate believable teenage affection throughout the movies she has acted in.
Jack Cantori: Zac Efron. According to the novel, Jack is college-age and I picture him to be a good-looking kid. I have been thoroughly impressed with Zac Efron's performances in his latest films and think he would make an excellent choice.
Wireman: George Clooney. Jerome Wireman needs to be a good-looking older male who can give advice and interject Spanish phrases. Clooney impresses time and again, and would be a good match for this central character.
Edgar Freemantle: Hugh Jackman. Ah, the titular character. Always the hardest to choose, no? Mr. Freemantle needs to be played by a man in his late forties or early fifties who can portray the hard-working sort of businessman character that would have been played by Cary Grant in the early twentieth century.
The minor characters in this book I would trouble myself less with casting, and would probably hold an open casting call for Melinda and her boyfriend, ad well as Ilse's boyfriend. I agree with somebody's comment that it would be nice to see a cameo by the writer Mr. King himself as Dario Nannuzzi.

I am reading te book now and can't put it down.
At first impression and this could change later...
Edgar- Viggo Mortgensen- Rober Downey jr -(he has to be able to slip into odd moods and I have seen both these actors do it very convincingly)
Forrest Whitaker-the DOC
Emma Stone as Ilse
Gena Rowlands/ Cloris Leachman is also a great choice- Elizabeth
Wireman- Alan Rickman or Harrison Ford Or Rober Downey Jr (I could see any of these in this roll also)
Cantori- Shia Lebeauf

Just finished Duma Key, and I loved it! :wow:
If/when they make Duma Key (the movie), who would you like to see in the cast?
Personally, I kept seeing Terry O'Quinn as Edgar & Jeff Bridges (ala The Big Lebowski) as Wireman.
What do you think?:geek:
Ian McShane would be a perfect Wireman. Liam Neeson using his American accent as Edgar. I like Terry O'Quinn, but he can be kind of cheesy sometimes.

I had a very hard time picturing Edgar in my mind's eye. Whoever plays the part has to have some real acting ability. Robert Downey Jr could pull it off. Hugh Laurie possibly. Hank Azaria is an intriguing possibility. If Richard Dreyfuss was 20 years younger, it'd be no contest. I like the idea of a Jeff Bridges type for Wireman if you went that direction, but as I read the book, the character came off as actually spanish. I really can't picture anybody but David Zayas (Angel Batista from "Dexter").

I like some of the ideas here but a few are way off base in terms of age, ethnicity, etc - at least as how they are described in the book.
Edgar Freemantle is white (from Minnesota), late 40s - early to mid 50s. Decent actors who could fit the profile: Stephen Lang, Liam Neeson, Chris Cooper, Bill Pullman, Ed Harris, Kevin Spacey, Gary Oldman, Gabriel Byrne, Viggo Mortensen, Christoph Waltz (if he nails the accent).
Jerome Wireman is white (from Omaha), longish dark hair - greying around the temples - prob around late 40s or early 50s - perhaps a hint of Hispanic blood there. Possible actors: Jeff Bridges, Stephen Lang, George Clooney, Pierce Brosnan, Dustin Hoffman (maybe too old?), Jeffrey Wright, Alred Molina, Mark Ruffalo, Cliff Curtis, Javier Bardem, Joaquim De Almeda.
Jack Cantori is white, Italian American (from Florida), described as "impossibly young" by Edgar, prob in his early to mid twenties. Possible actors: Joseph Gordon Levitt, Penn Badgely, Jessie Eisenberg, Jonah Hill.
Xander Kamen is black, extremely tall and obese but with a destinctively calming voice, middle aged: Forrest Whitaker, Michael Clarke Duncan, Frankie Faison (all with some extra padding).
Ilse Freemantle: Isla Fisher, Elizabeth Olsen, Emma Stone, Carey Mulligan, Jennifer Lawrence, Ashley Greene.
Pam Freemantle: Michelle Pfeiffer, Mary McDonnell, Melissa Leo, Meryll Streep, Kim Basinger, Rene Russo, Marcia Gay Harden, Annette Benning, Helen Mirren, Patricia Clarkson, Sharon Stone, Kristin Scott Thomas, Susan Sarandon.
Elizabeth Eastlake: Faye Dunawaye, Lauren Bacall, Ellen Burstyn.
If SK does a cameo (which he must) he would have to be either the doctor, Principe, that wants to study Wireman's brain, or one of the people who wants to buy EF's paintings when he brings them to the Scoto to show Dario Nanuzzi. Dario's role is far too large to give to SK - who as much as I love his books, ain't no actor.
