Not exaccl on topic, but I have a 1st edition of Wizard and Glass that is signed by Dave the illustrator.
I think that is pretty epic cool.
Rumor has it that W&G (the 1st Grant with the bullet-biter) was a low point in the initial release numbers.
I wonder if anyone knows why?
Was it because 'The Tommynockers' pissed off the critics so well?
Or because interest in the DTS just ebbed at the time?
Any thoughts?

DT IV had 40,000 copies printed, the same as DT III. DT II had a print run of 30,000, while the first printing of DT I was 10,000, with another 10,000 in the second printing. DT IV seemed more scarce because it was the first time Donald M. Grant, the publisher, distributed them to a lot of the chain bookstores. It is assumed that a lot of these copies went to casual King readers (who kept them) instead of to the collectors, so the number offered in the aftermarket (eBay, etc.) was lower. Now, 13 years later, they command a slight premium over the other volumes, but nothing like they did seven years ago.
A copy signed by Dave McKean is a treasure, too!

When I was in LA, Caroline took me to this awesome little used book store called Dark Delicacies.
It's an entire book store dedicated to the horror genre.
I found and purchased a 1st Edition hardcover of Black House.
When I looked inside the cover, I found a card with Peter Straub's autograph......Not SK's, but still not too shabby :)

I actually did find a signed hardback mint copy of Insomnia at a Value Village (same type of store as Goodwill) in a small town north of Seattle. How this book made it there is still a mystery to me, but hey, it was only $2.99 so I just couldn't pass it up. I would've been happy to pay much more than that!!!!! I always go to Goodwill's etc. and always check the books to see if they've been signed. I find tons of them that way.

Yesterday was my birthday, and my wife presented me with Duma Key in hardcover. She said she walked downtown on Saturday, after we had a fight, and picked it up at Java Joes/Bookmarc's in Bangor. I had not finished the book when I got it at the public library, as I have a hard time reading his novels where the wife dies (I haven't gotten past that part in Bag Of Bones, either).

Ordered the signed limited edition of Full Dark No Stars from Cemetary Dance as soon as the email popped up in my inbox!! I didn't want to lose out this time, so as soon as I woke up I turned on the pc and waited for the email to come thru. I'm just happy that it came thru before I had to go to work. Last time they announced a limited I was at work and by the time I got home they were sold out (of course). I kind of knew that CD pubs was going to be doing the limited because the day after Ms Mod was asked by someone if there was going to be a limited (she said she couldn't say anything at that time, which is code for 'Yes, there will be one.':biggrin2:), CD pubs hinted that there was going to be a HUGE announcement made on the 19th of Oct. (do the math). We all know that the number 19 figures HUGELY in SK's universe.

Sometimes it's code and sometimes I honestly don't have the information. :smile2: When I was first asked about a limited edition, I think I'd answered that there wasn't one that I was aware of and that was the truth. I only learned about it in the last couple of months but was not able to release any information until yesterday. Especially with the limiteds, because more often than not they're done by small press publishers, a deal isn't struck until sometime after the mass market edition rights have been negotiated.
Goodlovin' that's another good reason to go to the Home page of the site first and to sign up for our newsletter. :smile2: Also not a bad idea to be on the mailing lists for some of the publishers that have done Stephen King limited editions in the past.

Hi Goodlovin'! (Love your handle!!) Please read my post up above. You have to be on the email list for these small publishers in order to 'get' the books when there announced. When there's literally tens of thousands of King fans out there and only a very limited number of books being printed, someone's bound to be left out. I am sorry that you lost out on the chance to get a signed edition. There is one up on ebay already, going for twice the original price, if you can believe it. But, look at what the price of a signed limited of the Gunslinger went for originally ($60) and what it goes for now (anywhere from $600- $2,000 or more). That's the cost we fans have to pay for a limited edition from the master. Hang in there, when you see what Cemetary Dance does with their edition of Full Dark No Stars you will be extremely happy. They are one of the best small press publishers out there today. Friendly staff, great products. Their books are meant to be read and last thru multiple readings, where as the ones you buy at the big 'box' stores fall apart after three readings. Check the SK site for the 'links' section, it'll give you links to all of the small press publishers that has done SK books in the past.:grinning:

Here is a question I am curious about. I assume that Mr King signs a multi book deal with a large publisher. Because he signs that contract how is he then allowed to have a smaller company like CD put out its run of limited edition and signed editions and such?
I understand sales might be 20 or 30k for the limited editions and that is probably a drop in the bucket compared to what the larger publisher makes but I'm shocked they aren't wanting to put out their own larger run of special edition books and make even more money.
Moderator
October 20th, 2010, 01:39 PM
The book deals with the larger publishers are for mass market circulation rights so he is free to do a limited edition with any other publisher. A smaller print run is part of the allure of a special edition as well as the higher quality of the materials used for the production of the book. Small press publishers are better suited for those as that has become a specialty for many of them. And, it's not about the money for Steve but allowing the special/limited editions does help out small press publishers which is one of the reasons he continues to do them.

Open it. Some publishers use shrinkwrap that can be harmful to a book in the long-term. Plus, you want to be sure the volume is okay--no misbound signatures, etc.

I bought On Writing about two weeks ago in hopes of letting the master help mold me into a better writer. It's a good read just to read as well as informitive. To those of you who have read it already, where do you send the homework assignment? He directed me to the site but I am not sure where exactly to put it, forum, posting, personal profile? Or is there like a dumb bin to throw it into for the King himself to read?

Matter of opinion, maybe si, maybe no.
But quite a while is spent on the character development before the story takes off but it's a beauty when you get into it, although it caught many of us (me included) on page one.

My copy of the gift edition of "Full Dark, No Stars" came today. My first LE and I have to say VERY HAPPY. I didn't expect the art to enhance King's work like it did for me. (4 artists, 1 for each story, 4 clearly different styles as well) I was shocked at how much it pleased me. The pen and ink drawings that accompany "1922" were my favorite. That and the wraparound cover which is perhaps the best cover I've seen on one of King's books. I CANNOT stop sneaking back to gaze at the panels. Any of you guys agree that the art for this book was the cherry on top of a perfect sundae??

Oooooooooooooo, I don't envy you at all, this is how it all started for me- with my first ever LE from Donald M. Grant books which was the gift edition of the Talisman. I was stunned at how beautiful the book and artwork was (and still is). Now, many years and many, many dollars later, I have an entire glass fronted bookcase full of signed/limited and gift edition :smile2:books by Sai King. I blame it all on Donald Grant for making such a beautiful volume, may he rest in peace.

Good luck finding a dj for it. Those dj's are notorious for not holding up very well, made of thin paper and the colors are known to show lots of 'wear' after awhile. If you do find one, immediatly put it in a Brodart (or similar) cover.

I just bought the uncut version of The Stand and reread. It was so great, again. Some of his books I read so long ago that going back to them and re-reading them as a grown-up instead of a college student has been great. It's like seeing old friends again. You remember the general story line from each of them, but I had forgotten the rich detail and how much I come to live each character involved in the story. I have been looking for some Stephen King inspired art. I would love to get a picture of the Overlook Hotel to hang up somewhere.

The Fall of Gilead, which I really enjoyed, and the Battle of Jericho Hill, which I'm afraid to say I found a bit of an anti-climax and a disappointment after wondering for years about the story of that event.
Got both as the hard-cover collections for Christmas to complete the set, they make a nice addition to my SK collection and the artwork is outstanding.

Last week, The Stand, unabridged hard cover...it's freaking HUGE!!!! and cost $40... Someone borrowed my softcover and never returned it, so i treated myself. In a few days I hope to get the next edition of the LRH comic, regular cover and variant.
I just got a used copy of The Long Road Home at a Hastings for $12....I have always been interested in these but the cost along with me not knowing the order has made me shy away from them.
Can anyone list the different variations of Dard Tower comics and the order??? It would help me greatly!!!

I have all the DT series and Robin Furth's Concordance to The Dark Tower so far. I think I'm going to collect and re-read all his works on the nook chronologically now that I have purchased and read the whole DT series again.

I have only recently (within a year so) gotten into Sthephen's books after reading IT, so last week, I put £10 (UK) into my bank and had a look on the play trade section of play (a UK based entertainment website - books, cd's dvd's etc) to see what I could pick up. I got Pet Semetary, Misery, The Shining, and The Stand: Complete and Uncut edition - for a total of £9.75. I prefer 2nd hand paperbacks - paperbacks because I generally read most in bed, lying on my side with my book in one hand, so they are easier and lighter to hold. 2nd hand, because a book is something you pretty much have no choice but to mark and damage with spine creases, and general wear, and I don't like to damage my newly bought things. Plus there is just something that feels cozy and nostalgic about an old book.
I hope I dont come across as cheap.

The New York Times on the flames inside cover & a quote "GORY AND HORRIFYING...YOU CAN'T PUT IT DOWN!" Chicago Tribune on the second page of the gate-fold's black paper. But I'll tell you something funny; I paid $1.99 from Value Village but the cover price originally on the book is $1.75! I'm not complaining over $0.24 but they charged me more than the book was supposed to be worth & usually they mark the prices less than the printed price. I've recently gotten back into Stephen King, and pretty hardcore I might add. This past week I purchased dvd's of The Graveyard Shift and The Mist. Within the past two weeks I picked up paperbacks of From a Buick 8, The Stand (Which I'm reading now), The Dead Zone, It, and Salems Lot.
If you leave SK for another author, and then come back to SK, does that make you an Inconstant Reader? Just a thought.

My most recent were a lot of 21 SK books(several of which I had already read) that I got off of eBay for about $20+ s&h. We won't discuss the fact that I had the wrong address in there(I hardly ever use eBay) and that my s&h charges got ridiculous before the escapade was over. However, I've gotten so much enjoyment from the books thus far, I could care less now how much I spent on stupid shipping charges. Besides, I still spent Way less than I would've buying them new, or driving all over town trying to find them at used book spots(Goodwill is my fave..I found a 1st edition of Misery there for a whole 99 cents earlier this year...though I think I've already mentioned that on here.)

What?! Who didn't love Maximum Overdrive (ha). I would love to "publish" all the Castle Rock newletters out to a website, but read that it had been tried before, but someone couldn't get copyright approval. Who knows? That might have been a decade ago. Might try again. It would be good fun to read through all these and see everyone's thoughts "back in the day."

Good luck to you! You'd have to contact all of the people who have had articles, reviews, stories, etc. and get them to all sign off on that. I once thought about just using my laser scanner/copier to try and make copies of them but it didn't work out too well. I wanted to put them on a cd so in case anything should happen to the actual paper copies there would be a back up.

Borders is going out of business...wwwwwaaaaaaaa... and I picked up a very nice collector's edition of Under the Dome. It has illustrations and other goodies.
I also just ordered "A Book of Horrors" edition signed by editor Stephen Jones and artist Les Edwards, and includes a new story by King. The traycased edition has sold out. It is co-published by Cemetery Dance and UK PS Publishing and can be ordered from either published. They are only printing 1000 copies. For more info you can go here: http://www.cemeterydance.com/page/CDP/PROD/jones02
Lastly, I posted elsewhere in this forum that I just received a great long-sleeve t-shirt from CafePress with "Constant Reader" on the front along with a replica of Stephen King's signature. It is way cool and the money goes to a good cause. I'd been looking again in this forum to find the thread where I heard about it, and realized the store can be accessed from the stephenking.com home page. Just click on the SK Merchandise link at the top of the page, or go here: http://www.cafepress.com/stephenking
Happy reading and happy purchasing!

The Road to The Dark Tower - Exploring Stephen King's Magnum Opus, by Bev Vincent. Bought it at Borders a couple of weeks ago - finished reading it sitting on the deck with a cup of coffee this morning! It was great! Like a trip down memory lane with insight and info added! I highly recommend adding this book to anyone's collection!

I picked up a first edition Grant copy of The Wastelands from ebay. I was pleasantly surprised at the great condition of this book. Someone took very good care of it. The book is 100 or so pages longer than my trade paperback edition so there is lots of extra white space. The illustrations look more vibrant too. It's a beautiful edition.

The first episode 'Battleground' literally starts off the collection with a bang! William Hurt does an excellant job with his role, I don't believe he has any dialogue at all. Most of the others are pretty good, although for most 'Crouch End' was a stinker.

The library here had a sale today and I bought the first four DT books from Plume, paperbacks with the artwork inside ( like the one showed here...
13155 )...ALL of them never read, they still smell like new...for the unbelievable price of 14 Canadian bucks TOTAL.
Almost passed out at this opportunity, still can`t believe it..
Then, as I was walking back home, I stopped by some used book store and found an original first edition of Thinner, published in 1984, hard-cover, with the picture of " Richard Bachman "...in near mint condition, read maybe only once.
NO mention of SK anywhere...for the astonishing price of just five bucks.
Never even seen a "real" Bachman book where there is no mention of SK and now I know what RB looked liked before he died of cancer.

Hi everyone !
Though it's not an item, I've recently had Pennywise tattoed in my left arm.
You all know the original picture because it's actually the cover of the soon-coming special edition from cemetery dance (and if you wanna have a look, I posted it on an album on my page).
This isn't the first tattoo inspired by Stephen King that I get, another one being a drawing by Jae Lee I just fell in love with while reading the DT comics.
And well, some of you may find it a bit extreme but the thing is I'm really attracted in tattoos and I think it's important, when you choose to get one, that it is something you have thought about / that represents you well / that you belong to.
Thinking about it, the answer was quite clear : it had to be linked with SK universe. I just had to wait until I found the right pics. :-)

Since I have recently decided to only buy King's novels in the American hardcover edition, I decided to check Barnes & Noble and see which novels they had in store. Well, apart from the few ones I already own, the ones they did have in store were Everything's Eventual, From a Buick 8, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon and Dark Tower 6: Song of Susannah. Yeah, so far I haven't been disappointed with King's short stories either. They seem darker, most of the time. Especially the endings, which don't always have to be proper closure in a short story. I really like that.

Stephen King: Uncollected, Unpublished is terrific. It's basically just an overview of stories most people will never get to read, so it's a bit of a c*@#-tease in that regard. Still, if you're interested in that sort of stuff, it's indispensable. Plus it's got a lengthy chapter from the unpublished novel Sword in the Darkness!
I also highly recommend Rocky Wood's Stephen King: The Non-Fiction.
