I love Don't Fear the Reaper, my husband and I play that one on Rock Band all the time.

Ha, and we were just talking about Jack Off Jill yesterday, hadn't thought about them in years. What an odd coincidence.

I have favorite bands for certain activities.
When writing or drawing I like to listen to bands such as Enya, My Dying Bride (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bVO5DduK98)
When I'm running or working out I'll listen to something like Nile that really gets the blood pumping.:biggrin2: I really like the lyrics because they're all based on the history of ancient egypt. Sometimes with entire song lyrics being direct translations from "The Book of the Dead" and other ancient egyptian manuscripts. They have the best song titles like: Dusk Falls Upon the Temple of the Serpent on the Mount of Sunrise, and Chapter of Obeisance Before Giving Breath to the Inert One in the Presence of the Cresent Shaped Horns.:eyebrow: And the guitarist gives detailed explanations behind each song's lyrics in liner notes. A little too esoteric for my taste. I like stuff with five chords or less with a lead singer that gets busted for possession at least twice a year.

Hi,
Didn't Deathcab for Cutie take their name from a Steely Dan song (or did I imagine it?)

Long days and pleasant nights

Paraphrasing Wikipedia:

"Death Cab for Cutie" was a song written by Vivian Stanshall and Neil Innes and released in 1967 by Stanshall and The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band on their album Gorilla. The song is featured in the Beatles movie Magical Mystery Tour as a lyrical accompaniment for a striptease act. The band Death Cab for Cutie took their name from the song.

I can't do more than one at once in here, I love 'em too much...

Ummmmm, how about, Garbage! I freakin love Shirley Manson. I'd give her all the candy if she was hungry for it.

She had been in the band Angelfish prior, which was a good 80's band, but that only produced that one album and then broke up.

If you listen to the lyrics of the first album, you can feel the pain she was in. She was a starving artist, literally. I guess the rest of the band didn't even realize that she just made it to America, with nothing. Barely enough to buy a candy bar a day for the days meal. "I'm Only Happy When It Rains", or "As Heaven Is Wide" are extremely powerful songs.

But even when she made it with the band, and living expenses and creature comforts were taken care of, she still didn't stop producing amazing music.

The band Garbage does a kind of harsh techno-rock type sound. I was told, that originally, Butch Vig, who is a lead member of Garbage, sent in a mix of the song "Last", by Nine Inch Nails for a set of remixes Trent wanted, and Trent responded, "this song is Garbage". Ding. The band came up with a name for their music right then and there.

And actually, the Last - Butch Vig mix song is pretty cool. Wish I could find a copy of the original one, not the mono one that's floating around the net.

Shirley Manson writes all the lyrics, or at least she used to. They just expected her to do it when she was in the band, and she had no real problems doing it, although she felt she didn't know what she was really doing with it. But she didn't argue, and she handled it like a true gunslinger.

Her lyrics are mesmerizing, and although I doubt everyone will 'get' them, they really helped me through hard portions of my life. I remember once, I put in her second album, 'Version 2.0' when I hadn't heard it for a number of years, since a whole lot had changed in my life, and the songs instantly drew tears from me. It reminded me of a time in my life that was gone, because I listened to that album constantly back then.

She's one of those women that chose in her heart at birth, to not be the most physically beautiful, because it would have held her back. Nothing but beauty there as far as I'm concerned. She's the type of girl I say yes to, before I know what she's asking, she's just so damn wonderful.

Here's my current favorite song by Garbage.

Metal Heart

LYRICS WITHIN

I wish I had a metal heart
I could cross the line
I wish that I was half as good
As you think I am

But now that we know for sure they're telling lies when they say
No one gets hurt and therefore nobody dies
You know it's hard to believe anything that you hear
They say the world is round

Wish I was as big as you
You'd have to tell the truth
I'd be nothing you could hurt
Nothing you could use

But now that we know for sure they're telling lies when they say
No one gets hurt and therefore nobody dies
You know it's hard to believe anything that you hear
They say the world is round
The world is round?

I want to be dependable, I want to be courageous and good
I want to be faithful so that I can be heroic and true
I want to be a friend you can rely on you can lean on and trust
I want to understand so I can forgive and be willing to love

I wish I wasn't flesh and blood
I would not be scared
Of bullets built with me in mind
For then i could be saved

My sweet lord take care of me for i think i'm done
Kiss my mother on her cheek and lay my burden down

But now that we know for sure they're telling lies when they say
No one gets hurt and therefore nobody dies
You know it's hard to believe anything that you hear
They say the world is round
The world is round

Another I love, is that song Parade... "Doctor, we're dying. There's no use in crying. So live for tomorrow, and do what you have to."

Girls (artists) like this make sure hell can't exist, because they're there too, as far as I'm concerned.

Favorite song: Don't Fear the Reaper by Blue Oyster Cult

I got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell!

One of my favorites:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLYD_-A_X5E
Okay, 1) that was cool, and 2) I'm ashamed to admit this, but I didn't realize Kanye sampled (heavily) from that for his song Stronger. He just lost about 20 coolness points in my book. Not 'cause he sampled, but because that was by far the best part of his song. The rest was just ... meh.

So anyways, I might be the only person left in the US who listens to the radio, at least on my daily commute. I'm a rabid station switcher, though, so I have somewhat eclectic tastes based largely on the radio and things I dig up online. I flip back and forth between pop, country, oldies (although the KC station stopped playing the real* oldies), alternative, classic rock, urban. When I drive our car with XM radio I sometimes dig on bluegrass and folk as well. That being said, some of my favorite musical artists are ones that don't get much airplay. Here's a smattering, by no means a complete list.

Indigo Girls: amazing lyrics
The White Stripes (check out Rag and Bone (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLcnPZbnX5c) from Icky Thump)
Shiny Toy Guns
Nickel Creek (Doubting Thomas and When in Rome (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLh-KQuxcG8) are my two faves of theirs)
Death Cab for Cutie
KT Tunstall
Allison Krauss
And of course some classic stuff. I really like The Beatles, old Cat Stevens, Simon & Garfunkel ... and I have a fondness for KISS, stemming from childhood exposure (older brother).

I used to have a favorite song, but it's impossible to pick one now.

This is nearly impossible to answer. Right now I have been going on a Phish binge (live not studio) since they have started a new tour.

I love some techno - Paul van Dyk is superb. The dual set Out There and Back is my current favorite. The songs are meant to be litstened to in the order that they are on the album. Shpongle is also a goodie.

If I feel like going through the vinyl then it's Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers, Cat Stevens, Booker T, Crosby Stills Nash & Young, or some old Bob Dylan.

If I feel like being mean to the neighbors I'll blast out some Marilyn Manson, Clutch, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin

I pretty much listen to anything (except the radio).

There are soooooo many good ones out there. I just want to mention a few that are great, recent bands that are being terribly underrated right now. With so many Pink Floyd fans out there, I'm surprised that so many people have not discovered Porcupine Tree yet, in particular, the albums "Darkwing" and "In Absentia". Another great band if you are interested in the old southern rock bands and want to hear something new is My Morning Jacket. Check out some of their live performances if you can, especially a live performance of "Run-Thru". They are amazing live!
