View Full Version : Favourite King Character?

The Darkening
March 3rd, 2008, 05:17 PM
I'd like to know who the most popular characters are with SK's fans.

I have many myself and am quite fond of both Nick Andros and Tom Cullen from The Stand but I have to say my favourite character from all the books would almost definitely be Oy from the Dark Tower series. lol I know not necessarily a popular number one favourite but I just love the way SK writes him into such vivid life. I can picture Oy almost perfectly (to me he's like a black Airedale Terrier).

Do you have a fave character?

The Running Man
March 4th, 2008, 10:09 AM
Ben richards from The running man. Roland, Cuthbert, Susan, Pere Callahan, The tick tock man from The dark tower series. Quite a few from the stand (including Nick and Tom). There are so many in different books.

Dark Tower

Roland, Oy, Eddie Dean, Pennywise, Bill Denbrough, Carrie....and so many more

My favorites are in two separate categories: favorite mains and favorite bad guys.

bad guys: Greg Stillson (The Dead Zone); when he kicked the dog to death.. a very memorable scene, George Stark (The Dark Half), Roland (The Gunslinger); he let Jake drop..., The Trashcan Man (The Stand), Atropos (Insomnia), Flagg (especially in Eyes of the Dragon)

mains: Roland (all the rest Dark Tower books), Jake (Dark Tower), Ray Garraty (Long Walk), Stu Redman (Stand), Ralph Roberts (Insomnia), Bobby Garfield (Hearts in Atlantis)

.. if I had to pick just one... Roland of Gilead would have to be it.

Tom Cullen, Laws yes!

I want to throw Wireman of Duma Key out there too. He was one of the best of all time for me. Any of the characters in IT... Ben, Bill, Richie... and of them.

Donna Trenton definitely. She's hot for her age and she's a stereotype of a woman who can do all that's required of her. She's tough and yet graceful.

I loved Nick Andros' character from The Stand, also Alan from Riding the Bullet and John Smith from The Dead Zone. I read the Dead Zone when I was 14 and was intantly but off by the name John Smith. For some reason, as a immature reader, I kept going and Johnny is one of my favorite characters to this day. + A Breakfast Clubber played him in the series. lol. :biggrin2:

Oy has to be my all-time favorite character, closely followed by Tom Cullen.

There are a few that I've enjoyed reading about, but those two mentioned above are, by far, the best. (in my opinion)

Roland, from the first time I read him. After that it would be Jack Sawyer, I was a young teen at the time and remember crying for Jack. If a character can make me cry, then the writer has written well.

All i know is that if i develop a favorite attachment to a character in a book (or series) i know that is who is going to die in some horrible way - one of my favorites has always been "oy" - he is just the type of pet/companion everyone wants - and i think this is only because i just finished the book, but "Ilse" & "Edgar" are very much like my gf & her dad (also an Ed) - so i feel an attachment to them as well

Trisha McFarland from The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon is a pretty cool character, all the characters form Hearts in Atlantis are great (my favourite King book) with an extra special mention to Ted Brautigan.
Roland et al are not to be discounted either.
I know my girlfriend would say Wolf from The Talisman.
Randall Flagg is the best bad guy.
I think though, that a lot of people who read this thread will agree that a lot of the best King characters are the ones who supply the backdrops to a lot of his stories, people like Ace Merrill and the rest of the Castle Rock population.

The kids from The Body and Andy from Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption are good too.

There are just too many.

Of course, Roland Deschain.

I did have a flash of memory when reading the question of the Sheriff Lady from "The
Tommyknockers" but cannot remember her name. She was not a main character but
she resonated with me in some way that caused me to remember her. Anyone know her
name?

Also, the little girl from "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon" sticks out in my mind.

So now, I may have to read The Tommyknockers again. Thinking about that also makes
me remember the two little boys - one who made his little brother dissapear and became
so distraught over the occurance...

Cuthbert springs quickly to mind. A true warrior spirit. Roland would have been doomed had Cuthbert never been in his life.

"I'll believe in ghosts when I catch one in my teeth."

or that classic line, "I hate to be a pain in the neck, or an ache in the back, or a milky drip from the tip of a sore dick, but..."

Imagine the raw power alone in a gunslinger. They hold their own in the face of seemingly insurmountable dangers, slamming their force against and through whatever obsticles manifest in their road. And Cuthbert always did it with his sickly sweet smile. Words can cut deeper than the sharpest weapons, and he had a demonic skill with both his words and the weapons of his fathers.

But saying I have a favorite King character is like saying I could like one type of female body more than another. Uh uh. Even the best taste imaginable would start to taste like mud if that's all you let yourself enjoy.

I figure I might as well go on a fangirl brigade for a minute.

Pete McVries, from the Long Walk. He's just... I don't know, grand. Wonderful.
...
And he is so nice, I mean, most times. He gets angry, of course, they all do, but there something about him, he's so very loyal. Probably smart, too, the way he talks, and (you're all going, oh my gosh. The fangirl is scaring me...), I don't even know. Funny I guess, to me, we're a bit of the same that way, the way we speak joke. Usually, you're not suppose to laugh when people are killed in large masses but he made it enjoyable. Occasionally, I get strong urges to go read some of his excerpts from the books and then I feel all happy for awhile.
.. Yes I DO have a crush on a fictional character, is that a problem? xD

My favorite character has to be Oy from The Dark Tower Series. He was always surprising the other characters with his personality and his love towards Jake. He always put a smile on my face, and was great comical relief at the most unexpected moments. Oy's actions in the seventh book of the series brought tears to my eyes, he showed a respect and faith greater than many humans are capable of. If I ever found my self along the path of the Beam, I would want Oy by my side.

Roland (of course) and Susannah (very complex character) but no-one yet seems to have mentioned Jim Gardener from the Tommyknockers. Dark Tower series aside The Tommyknockers is my favourite King novel for sure. I was rooting for Gardener all the way. A deeply flawed hero like many of King's characters but definitely one of his best. What a shame someone got Jimmy Smitt to play him in that dire TV version..........

Roland wasn't my favorite. I felt bad about how no one could get through to him. He had made up his mind, and thrown his life in that direction above all else. He didn't even realize he had been tricked in a major sense, by a horribly malevolent force. Don't get me wrong, I love the guy and I'm really glad he was so hard and strong. He reminds me of my grandfather a lot. A wonderful man, who would hold up the world if given half the chance, but was hard because the important decisions always fell into his hands, and that alone tends to temper anyone. Maybe it was cause he was brought up during the depression, I dunno.

A favorite of mine, I'd have to say, would be SHEEMIE! Sheemie Ruiz to be more percice! Man, he was so kind, and nobel. I pictured him much more beautiful than he was portrayed in the comic. I loved how Stephen pointed out constantly how his little simple mind was way more noble than pretty much anyone around him. He was awesome! Really, he only knew what he knew, which wasn't much, but he obviously one of the most powerful Agents of the White that ever existed. He thought Cuthbert was the coolest character on the planet, and that's one aspect him and I will always share. Sheemie would have gone to any end for his loved ones, even knowing quite well every danger involved. Gold is useless compared to that. I don't care how much anyone else says it's worth.

I was sad about how he finally left King's worlds, but with the foreshadowing, I thought it was going to be much worse. And I'm the guy who doesn't consider death such a bad thing most of the time too, especially in Midworld. But I was glad at his end. It worked out perfect, ya know?

I believe my favorite King character would HAVE to be Lisey Landon. Little Lisey Landon who reminds me SO much of me. Short temper if she is bombarded by brought-back, hidden, buried memories. Strong, spacey, but can handle her own. I love when she's on the phone with that guy who tries to threaten her and she says, "Listen, Mr (whoever)...", gets all low-voiced, as if conspiring with the man who wants to rape her of her hubby's old manuscripts), "YOU CAN GO F**K YOURSELF!!!" Then proceeds to rip the phone from the jack. heh.

Gotta roll with Roland.

For best villain there would be a three way tie:

The Wendigo- Pet Semetary (I include the revived Gage Creed as a part of the Wendigo)
Annie Wilks- Misery
Norman Daniels- Rose Madder

- Nick Andros. I was a wee 11-year-old girl when I first swiped The Stand from my parents' bookshelf, and I developed such a crush on this character. /nostalgic sigh

- Ben Hanscom. I love all of the losers club of course, but my heart just goes out to Ben.

Of all the king books I've read so far (and thats most of them) I would have to say that my favorite character has gotta be Randall Flagg....he is the best of the bad guys,,,,,

the only other bad guy that I like is not from a King book but would have to be scorpio from Dirty Harry....

would be interesting to find out who Mr. Kings favorite bad guy is,....

My favourites include:

Arnie Cunningham (Christine) I just really liked this character, especially when he first gets Christine & starts getting some confidence/bit of an attitude about him. I also think the films portrayal of him is spot on. Anyone agree?

Annie Wilkes (Misery) This character is brilliant! She's crazy in love, literally & it makes her terrifying! I think the scariest thing abotu her is, there could be & probably are real Annie Wilkes' out there!!

There are so many great characters to love and hate in SK's books. Some of my favorites are "the Losers Club", Jack Sawyer, Larry Underwood, Nick Andros, Tom Cullen, Roland, Eddie, Jake, Susannah, and Oy. But my list is too extensive to put them all here::biggrin2:

Has to be Roland for the #1 top spot. Besides being basically awesome (I'm a sucker for a western, and he's got all the rugged qualities + he's a gunslinger), he's got so many levels to him. I loved how Sai King developed him in the books. There was always another little something to discover.

Other than him, I loved Nick Andros from The Stand. And Ben Hanscomb from It. Don't forget the infamous Flagg. He is the best villain.

I'm currently reading The Stand and I think that Harold Lauder is one of SK's greatest characters, a doomed tragic figure who chose the wrong path and paid the ultimate price. The fact that King can engender sympathy for such an unlikeable character shows just what a great writer he is. Lauder is a brilliant creation.

Duma Key is one of my favs. One thing I hated though was that at the end he says Wireman died which I thought sucked! It was bad enough that Ilse died. I really loved the story though. I also loved "Lisey's Story". If these two books are ever made into movies I hope they find the right director who will do them justice.

Jack Torrance and Beverly Marsh. I can totally relate to the former (minus the murderous impulses) and am in love with the latter.

I could list a hundred supporting characters who are fabulous and memorable but for major characters, I think i'd have to go with:

Jimmy Cody (Salem’s Lot)
Jack Torrance (Shining)
Beverly Marsh (It)
Larry Underwood (Stand)
Homer Buckland (Skeleton Crew)
Stan Norris (Night Shift)
Clyde Umney (Nightmares and Dreamscapes)
Sandra Stansfield (Different Seasons)

Full disclosure: i have not read Dark Tower or the last three or four he's written

Flagg - Flagg is far and away the PERFECT villain. He's downright, inarguably evil and yet he's somehow charming and likable. He's not the devil (literally) but he is a perfect stand-in for that bit of witicism about the devil being attractive. and it's precisely because he's my favorite character that his demise in DT7 infuriates me. Mordred is a one-time-use, throw-away character (i actually quite honestly LOVE everything else the character does), but if Flagg was going to go down, I would much rather have had it happen at the hands of The White.

I'm also very big on any character that has caused a distinct emotional reaction from me, whether it be hilarity, rage, pity, or sorrow. Some of these include:
Roland, Eddie, Jake, Oy, Tom Cullen, Nick Andros, Big Steve/Kojak, Glen Bateman, Johnny Smith, Cujo, Barlow, Gage, Church, Jack Sawyer, John Coffey, Trisha McFarland, Margaret White, Harold Lauder, The Thunder Five (especially Beezer), Duddits, Alice (from Cell), Edgar Freemantle, Blaze

My favorites I'd say would be Ralph Roberts, Wolf, Jack Sawyer, Roland, Randall Flagg, Edgar Freemantle, Jake Chambers, Jud Crandall, and Pennywise. Those are just the ones off the top of my head. I'm thinking if I really thought through all the books, my list would be quite long.

oh how to answer THIS one!?! I just dont know really! I really liked Ralph Roberts, but also poor Jake Chambers and sweet Duddits, but I also liked Edgar Freemantle and Lisey...I didnt care for Frannie Goldsmith. she was so immature (ofcourse!), but I felt she was self centered and I hate that in a person. lets see travelin Jack & heroic Wolf...I also liked Larry-altho he was 'not a nice guy'. (He tried to be, but he was what he was. a self servibg son of a @#$%^. so why did I list him? only reason I can think of is that he was making an effort to do the right thing....(?) idk. I see nobodys mentioning Callahan....hmm

It is hard to choose just a few to list. So many of the secondary characters I really enjoyed 'meeting' but don't remember their name. The main folks are probably Stu Redman, and Tommy, Nick and Glen Bateman. I didn't care for Larry Underwood alone, but once he met the others.. Stu and Glen and Ralph, he became a good man. I cried so hard over Henry Leyden (what a totally cool cat) and Jack and my beloved Wolf (right here and now) Ralph and Lois, baby Natalie. Ben and Bev, Mike. Oh.. Beaver.. Richie, Bill. Mattie and Kia, again, the tears.. I enjoyed Gert.. she would have been a hoot to know in person. Alan Pangborn. Edgar and Wireman.. oh Wireman.. I think I was a bit 'in love'. Never had that happen to me before, but he was such a "real" character.
