View Full Version : Favorite Song Usage in Stephen King Movie

There's lots of good songs used in key scenes of Stephen King's movies. What's your favorite and why?

Mine is "Bad to the Bone" in Christine (big surprise, huh James?). George's first few riffs capture the gleeful evil of the car. A close second for me is the agonizing scene in Pet Sematary where the trucker is barreling down the road towards Gage, singing along to the Ramones' "Sheena is a Punk Rocker."

I don't know about being a favorite song, but the freakiest would have to be Karen Carpenter's "We've only just begun" from 1408.

Yeah Don't Fear the Reaper from the Stand was great, but my favorite would have to be In the Mood by Glenn Miller from The Shining miniseries.

Midnight, The Stars, And You by Ray Noble, used in the Kubrick/Nicholson Shining, always creeps me out. I like the song...but it's creepy just the same. I think the music in both (both score-wise and song-wise) was great & had the right ambience. The music in the Kubrick film is scary in itself. Gives me the chills.

But how 'bout ''born to have it all'' in ''Carrie''.Listen to the lyrics and think about her ability, and you'll have goosebumps!

Big hit also: sul'aria in Shawshank Redemption (when Andy plays that mozart-la nozze de figaro track)

And Apt Pupil: End credits: berlin

And the song playing in Kingdom Hospital when the writer(wotizname?) is jogging towards his accident! Like That very much!

So true. She is a big George Thorogood fan, folks.

Around that time, in life though, I tuned into a band called Crowded House...with Neil Finn and the boys. I think one of my fav songs from that band was used in THE STAND. A song called "Don't Dream Its Over."

...there is freedom within, there is freedom without
try to catch the deluge in a paper cup...
...there's a battle ahead, many battles are lost
but you'll never see the end of the road while your travellin' with me...
hey now, hey now...don't dream its over...hey now, hey now...

My favorite is I think maybe was when Fran played "Crouded House - Don't Dream It's Over" the record player, after the plague had subsided... It's been a favorite song of mine forever.

Fran gave the last guy in town icecream. She was such a sweety. =)

The "Whats Your Theme Song"-thread...hmmm...well, I don't read every thread, just some of 'em. Sometimes I click on my Friends identity name that links to their Profile though, and from there I click on the "View All Posts By..." to read where and what they are chit-chatting about...ever try that feature?

The new S.K.-MB is cool...PLUS I don't bombarded with bunches of emails when someone sends a simple private message like "Hi" to me from the MB...I like that alot.

So if I owe you a beer...may as well make it two...I'm thirsty

In the movie Christine, Buddy and his buddies (haha) are out driving and Christine is driving behind them quietly... all you see are headlights, just like any other car, but Buddy is just now noticing them and Beast of Burden is playing on his radio. The visual and audio combo to me is great...almost like Christine is "infecting" his radio too just for that brief moment.

There's this song in the Shining miniseries that I can't remember the name of...it was written in the '90s but it's supposed to sound '40s and it does. It's played briefly in the ballroom. Instrumental, big band type.

This wasn't by Brian Setzer though. I remember one time I found the name of it on an imdb.com board for another movie. It took forever to find it & now I don't remember. I'll google & see if I can find out. It seems like whoever did it only had that out, that song they used in movies.

That is a song that's that type of music, but I guess the Shining one wasn't "star" anything. I had it wrong. I just looked it up & found the real title again: Moonlight Magic. (Moonlight...star something...I was on the right track. :sleepy:) It was composed by Alan Moorhouse.

Impossible to argue with the "Don't Fear the Reaper" choice, even though John Carpenter should get some inspirational credit on its incorporation into the original Halloween.

I would toss out two other nominees:

(1) The time-switch from the original Buddy Holly version of "Not Fade Away" to the new wave cover at the beginning of Christine.

(2) The dancing scene with the original "Do You Love Me?" (by the Contours?) in Sleepwalkers. It's just one dirty old man's opinion, but that may be the sexiest scene that any solitary, fully-clothed actress has ever done in mainstream cinema.

Some music by the Doors would have been appropriate for that movie as well, "People are Strange", "Break on Through to the Other Side", and others. They had a common theme of deviation from the norm and something evil going tap, tap, tap down the highway, the Darkman comes.

I *think* the composer for that part is Palencki...'kay I'm spelling that wrong. I'm pretty sure there was more than one composer for that, because he used old stuff for a lot of it.

I have to say Don't Dream It's Over in The Stand. It's the perfect song that illustrates that no one is dreaming anymore (about it being just the flu and that there is a cure) and to wake up and realize that the end of normal civilization as they know it is over. And the cutaway scenes of all the dead bodies and deserted land drive the lyrics of the song home even more.

Hell yes! Larry Underwood is my all-time favorite character.
I also thought the use of "I'll Be Seeing You" at the end of "Misery" was really creepy, as was the use of "Ave Maria" in "Needful Things" when the town in slowly but surely turning evil.

And speaking of "The Stand," I loved "Don't Fear the Reaper" in the opening montage and "Don't Dream It's Over" when the teddy bear is slowly being dragged out to sea.

I've noticed that music plays a large role in the books, and that's totally awesome. :biggrin2:

"Don't Fear The Reaper" at the beginning of The Stand. Absolutely chilling and the prefect way to set the mood.

First and most correct!

BOC did Don't Fear The Reaper with The Stand in mind, I am sure. Or perhaps King worte the book to go with the song. Whichever; they go together perfectly. If that movie is ever re-made, they will still have to use the song in the re-make. I had to go out and get that album on CD after seeing the miniseries on tv, just because of that one song.

There have been so many good songs placed along side of so many good stories. Music enhances a movie so very much. I think even the movies I didn't like were at least made bearable by the use of good music.

Perhaps someday, someone will release an album of music from movies based of the works of Stephen King.

I don't know exactly what they were singing about, but I'm a big Mozart fan and finished college with a music minor (which means I can speak/understand a smattering of Italian). I've seen "The Shawshank Redemption" but it's been a long time. Actually own "The Marriage of Figaro" (with a libretto thank goodness) so with a little research I can tell you what they were saying. I'll get back to you on that.

My favorite (and least popular movie) is the King directed "Maximum Overdrive". The music reflects his own tastes, which happen to mirror my own. The movie's okay, but the sountrack rocks!

For now I can't pinpoint one specific song, but I love the overall use of 50's/60' songs in "Hearts in Atlantis. Which also makes me think of "Stand by me," of course. :smile2:

Mine favorites are not in movies but rather in Kingdom Hospital.

Where's Your Head At? -by Basement Jaxx. This is when the body was searching for his head. This was so great and comical!

Kiss Him Good Bye -by SteamOh man I don't even have to tell you about this. This is when the ambulance's stereo turned on and when the surgeons were operating on the criminal. So funny! This is why I miss Kingdom Hospital.

And finally, Red Dragon Tattoo by Fountains of Wayne. This was the song that was played throughout the series and when Peter was jogging.

That's one of my favorites too. I posted the video somewhere in this thread.

Hi everyone, I'm new here but when I read this question the answer I immediately thought of was in "Misery" where Annie is making Paul write all day long she constantly plays a piece by Tchaikovsky that I believe is called "Piano Concerto # 1" to help "inspire" him. To this day, every time I hear that piece, I immediately think of Annie! When you think about it, it IS kind of creepy because it sort of matches the grandiose, fanciful world Annie lives in and sort of matches the mood she is in at that time!

Wow, looks like 3 things now. I'm a HUGE Ramones fan!!! What is the world coming to? I have three things in common with a Yankees fan!!! Oh the, horror:oh:

Seriously though, good choice!!!!

I always liked the whole Maximum Overdrive soundtrack. Big AC/DC fan. So much so I named my dog "Angus" after Angus Young!!!

To follow up on my reply about the Tchaikovsky piece from "Misery," I was just remembering another selection from there: While Annie and Paul were having dinner the night he was going to try to drug her, she plays the old song "I'll Be Seeing You, In All The Old Familiar Places" in the background while they eat. I LOVE that scene!

You have to admit it's pretty creepy having Annie play a romantic song for you while you're dining alone with her! I always think of Annie now when I hear "I'll Be Seeing You."

You gotta love Annie! She's my favorite! I'm her "number 1 fan!" :-)

"Paul, this is absolutely the BEST Misery ever!"
"My secret is I use only fresh tomatoes, never canned. And to give it that extra zip, I mix a little Spam in with the ground beef!"

"Don't Fear The Reaper" at the beginning of The Stand. Absolutely chilling and the prefect way to set the mood.

This one gets my vote too. Plus, it's totally wonderful to see a bunch of humans who got wiped out by their own deviousness, while hearing a song representing how death isn't all that bad.

Close second to me would be the other song used in the second chapter of 'The Stand'. I've always really loved that 80's song by Crowded House, Don't Dream It's Over. Although, I never would have imagined Franny putting her head on Harold's lap, I still think the song was just right. Also, hearing that song while seeing the aftermath of the plague in my hometown of Old Orchard Beach, really hit the spot for me.

I don't think any song could be more suited to 'The Stand', really.

...There's a battle ahead, many battles are lost
But you'll never see the end of the road
While you're traveling with me

Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know they won't win

I like a lot of the songs that he includes. I love the whole Maximum Overdrive soundtrack. We have a radio station that on weekends picks a classic album and airs the whole thing with limited interruption. Recently M.O. was the one aired. It ROCKED!! I hadn't listened to it in a while, and it made me want to watch the show again. But video provider doesn't have it so I will have to make do with listening to the songs.:smile2:

The Green Mile - Cheek to Cheek from Top Hat.

Michael Clarke Duncan should have won the Oscar for that performance. When he's singing it as they're strapping him in old sparky it still breaks my heart even though i've seen the film at least 20 times x

I love Fred Astaire! I definately agree with cheek to cheek. What was the song playing at the very beginning of The Shawshank Redemption? Was that Cheek to Cheek too? Anyway, I also like the song Andy plays over the speakers in Shawshank...

great thread - you forget the soundrack sometimes - have agreed with a lot of your choices but I do think the use of Host of Seraphim by Dead Can Dance, used in the Mist was soooo appropriate, in a sort of apocolyptic nature- it's on my ipod and it sends chills up my spine, I also found out that Lisa Gerrard was in Dead Can Dance (she who sang the Gladiator soundtrack) and I must admit, I'm quite a fan now.

Woah, same here on all counts! :eek2: I love the Shawshank Redemption score... especially the part where they pan over the prison and exercise yard for the first time.

Also, not sure if this counts, but "Baby, Can You Dig Your Man?" is probably my favourite song featured in an S.K. movie! I read somewhere it was composed by Al Kooper, but have yet to find a recording of it. I remember my mom and I laughed our asses off when we finally heard those lyrics put to a melody in the T.V. adaptation. And I love how everyone knows it, too... even Nick lip-read the lyrics. LOL.

I have my favorite MMORPG "war mode" music swapped out to Chase the Ace from Maximum Overdrive.

I still laugh every time I hear Golden Years by David Bowie. That series started really well, and That song was EVERYWHERE: hold music, elevator music, muzak, opening and closing credits, character is in the car with the radio on...priceless.

Well, it tickled my funny bone anyway, still does even.

I can see a strong case for Don't Fear the Reaper especially at the beginning of The Stand. I've never seen it. I couldn't finish "It". So I decided then and there no more SK miniseries for me. Maybe the cable guys can do a better job. They sure did with Dune.

I like Peer Gynt: Hall of the Mountain King by Grieg which is played in Needful Things. It's been a while since I've watched this one, but I think it's played when the whole town is turning against each other and it's one big f*ckarow. I'm going to agree with nearly everyone else that both Don't Fear the Reaper and Don't Dream it's Over fit perfectly in The Stand. I would take it another step farther though. I think the complete score by W.G. "Snuffy" Walden is perfect for the miniseries. The eerie "Project Blue" at the very beginning really sets the tone for the scene. Some of my other favorites are "Sorry Mister, I Don't Understand" when Nick meets Tom, "Larry and Nadine (The Rejection)" and "One Will Fall by the Way" when Stu, Ralph, Larry, and Glen are walking towards Vegas.

Stand by Me is also a classic of course.
