Yes they are. I had one many years ago while I was in college and always wanted another one. I had to go to several cat shows to learn about the breed and was lucky enough to find a nice, friendly breeder that took pity on me and educated me as to what I needed to know about these giant cats. After 2 years on a waiting list I finally got my baby about 2 years ago and she is the love of my life. Sadie is at 24 lbs. and is larger than my grey tabby and as big as a medium sized dog. The Maine Coons act more like dogs than cats and are extremely intelligent and head strong. My husband and son tell me she is spoiled but I say she is pampered. I always pictured Church in Pet Cemetery as a maine coon.

I can't see myself buying a cat when there are so many out there in need of a good home... that's just for me though! My breeder told me that Norwegian (sp?) Forrest Cats are more common in Europe and they are very similar to the Maine coon. Maybe you have seen one of those?

SECRET DIARY OF A CAT

DAY 752 - My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while I am forced to eat dry cereal. The only thing that keeps me going is the hope of escape, and the mild satisfaction I get from shredding on the occasional piece of furniture. Tomorrow I may eat another houseplant and cough it up on the carpeting.

DAY 761 - Today my attempt to kill my captors by weaving around their feet while they were walking almost succeeded, must try this at the top of the stairs. In an attempt to disgust and repulse these vile oppressors, I once again induced myself to vomit on their favorite chair... must try this on their bed (again).

DAY 762 - Slept all day so that I could annoy my captors with sleep depriving, incessant pleas for food at ungodly hours of the night.

DAY 765 - Decapitated a mouse and brought them the headless body, in
attempt to make them aware of what I am capable of, and to try to strike fear into their hearts. They only cooed and condescended about what a good little cat I was ...Hmmm. Not working according to plan...

DAY 768 - I am finally aware of how sadistic they are. For no good reason I was chosen for the water torture. This time however it included a burning foamy chemical called "shampoo." What sick minds could invent such a liquid. My only consolation is the piece of thumb still stuck between my teeth and the tiny bit of flesh under my claws.

DAY 771 - There was some sort of gathering of their accomplices. I was placed in solitary throughout the event. I overheard that my confinement was due to MY power of "allergies." Must learn what this is and how to use it to my advantage.

DAY 774 - I am convinced the other captives are flunkies and maybe snitches. The dog is routinely released and seems more than happy to return. He is obviously a half-wit. The bird, on the other hand, has got to be an informant. He has mastered their frightful tongue (something akin to mole speak) and speaks with them regularly. I am certain he reports my every move. Due to his current placement in the metal room his safety is assured.

But I can wait; it is only a matter of time....

Poor Jynxs! I pretty much tortured to no end today. I am so sick of these fleas and I have came out with all force! Save for I need to get stronger flea medicine on her! ( >.< )'''''''''''''''''''''''''' I brushed her with a flea comb for an hour then bathed her. Second combing while the foamy shampoo killed the fleas! *evil laugh* :D Finally I dried her off and made a nest with my sweatshirt in front of a huge roaring fire (in the wood stove of course). I came back from my shrink to find my apartment REALLY toasty and my cat looked dead. So I poked her really good with a finger. She peeked at me with half an eye and kind was like yyyyeeeees ssss .... Snore snore... zzzzzz... I took it that she was warm enough and she looks great now. My arms and shoulders don't look so great. This is the first time she fought me while bathing her! I had to ask my girlfriend help me disinfect and I was okay after that.

If you haven't de-flead your house (rugs, couches, etc) they will come back. The eggs fall off and stay in the carpets, hatch, and jump back on the poor unsuspecting kitty (or bite your ankles!). "They" have recently discovered that vacuuming kills fleas and their eggs, and doesn't just suck them up to later emerge from the bag.
Also, the products called Advantage, and Revolution are good. (Drops on the back of the neck for the cats). I find Revolution to be the best, since it also killed all the fleas in the house, as well as on the kitties. I once had a really bad flea infestation in my house, and I kept de-flea-ing the cats, and in a few days, they would be scratching again. Then, my kids starting saying something was biting their ankles!! So I finally gave in and got the good stuff. Now, we use it every two-three months, and no more fleas.
You can get these meds on-line cheaper than from the vet, because they sell the generic version of them. I've used the generic equivalent to Revolution, as it works just as well.

Okay I am getting right fed up with Teefa....like does she need to be in an assisted program living group or something....driving me right round the twist...she is.
She loves to go in the bathroom ...big big vanity thingy and mirror....she sits on it and looks into the mirror....it reflects sorta to the living room...just one edge....if I am sitting on the couch she can see me.....but this is her game...:eek2::eek2: she looks into the mirror...and I have to wave to her...in the reflection....she loves that....and if i stop,she whips her head around and starts bawling till i do it again.....:eek2::eek2: then I have to wave again.....till I stop....and so on...........why in the heck is she fascinated with this................this poor lil cat lived with a crack dealer....that was her history before I rescued her.....cant figure this out though lol.......she gained alot of weight since i got her though.....happy cat,happy cat.

I work for Terminix and vacuuming doesn't kill the eggs. They are,for the most part, attached to the carpet and nothing will penetrate the egg. It can lay dormant for up to a year and then hatch. You need an insect growth regulator that you can spray after you have killed the adult fleas. That way, when the eggs hatch, they will reach a certain point in their life cycle and not be able to continue and they will die.

So I've got a little good news I'd like to share with y'all. When I got home from work Saturday night 'lo and behold there was a kitteh in my bedroom hoggin' mah pilloh. He's just beautiful. He's a two year old that my sister got from our local shelter. It's a little sad because he's has a bad time of it and he's kinda skinny and wouldn't eat until this morning. I finally got him to eat some tuna. YAY!!! He's super sweet and just purring up a storm right now. His name is Fred and he's just the sweetest boy, so y'all send some good vibes his way and I think with that and some TLC he'll be fine.

LOL Me and my tiny pictures! Oh well I don't know how to resize things from my files, but this is my cat Half Dead Fred. Oh the drama with this guy. He's a darling though and has totally won my heart.
After his rescue from the shelter he was a mess. It turns out his liver was shutting down, he had one of the worst cases of anemia the vet had ever seen, he was infested with parasites and extremely malnourished. He also had kennel cough, a respiratory infection from the shelter.
Some of his teeth had been broken out and he couldn't eat on his own, he was also too weak and ill to have an appitite so I hand fed him pureed food every two to three hours with a syringe. This went on for nearly two weeks. He's now eating on his own but he was literally half dead... oh and he's cross eyed too to boot poor fella.
He took several good turns and started to gain weight when the fur around his little snout started to fall out. He was bald in a nearly perfect ring that circled his snout like a muzzle, as it turns out it appears as though he was healing there from a traumatic injury.
I called the shelter to ask them if they knew what happened to him and they said they had no idea.
Anyhow I think Our Fred is finally going to be ok (knock wood) so I thought I'd post a pic of him with his yellow african to share with you all.

Poor Fred! At least now he is in good hands! I am glad he is pulling through Purrrrrrrr..... He is a beautiful cat.

My two are into their sixteenth year now and still going strong ! They live inside the house as there is too much wildlife outside that they would "seek and destroy" the vet reckons they have another ten years in them....

It is sad, but thank you for the flea info. I will keep that in mind for future problems; like now with my cat named Thumper. I moved in with my g/f last October and lost Jynxs some time before Thanksgiving. She got out one day and was chased by a dog. I later looked for her and couldn't find her. I was told a large group of children were around that day as well. So, I just hope Jynxs is happy and safe. Though I sure do miss her and her LOUD purring. I just have no luck with kittehs as of lately. Thumper has been really warming up to me. She snuggles up against me when she wants attention. That or she sits on whatever is in front of me.

We have two camera-shy black and white cats, almost a year old. Brother and sister, but he's grown to about 3 times the size of his sis, who is tiny (we also still see their litter-brother, who's also quite small). They're both quite fluffy and he's just daft. Because we live right on a main road, they're housecats.

i have so much sadness in my good life that it aches sometimes just to be awake. but i do get a few smiles here and there from this thread. i like the guitar kitten, the happy charge complete and i has a happy pictures. i have been trying to cheer myself up, but looking at kittens is a double edged blade for me. I am happy when i see how cute they could be, but then I miss my Anna-Bell and my Jynxs... sorry, I am just very sick and miserable... i need a couple BIG-BIG LOLcats please?
