They're mentioned in passing (as daughters, not as twins) by Ullman during his interview with Jack in the opening section. Later, Grady reveals what happens to them in a phone conversation while he's trying to get back to Colorado. Jack also discusses this with Grady at one point.
They never appear to Danny the way they do in the movie. There are a lot of things in the movie people would swear are in the book but aren't. "All work and no play" is another of them.

The last family that spent the winter there had twin girls who I believe met a sticky end. They're merely mentioned in the book and Kubrik obviously expanded on it.

...they are the daughters of Grady, the much referenced previous caretaker, but are not "twins" in the book...they are mentioned, but do not play the prominent role in the novel, like they do in the Kubrick film-where they not only have become an iconic image, but are "identicals"...

I believe the twin girls were only in the movie. The old caretaker had "daughters" if I recall, but they were just sisters and didn't appear in the hallway to terrorize Danny!:oh:

I do remember that, I just must have confused it with the movie. I thought Wendy was freaked out in the book too.
Thank you Bev.

Am listening to the book now and remembered this thread- the girls were 6 and 8 yrs old, not twins and so far were only mentioned during the interview.
