I was excited to see the news of a limited edition of The Shining going on sale, but when I got to the site all the signed copies had already been sold out. This happens every single time I find out that signed copies are for sale, they are already sold out. Am I doing something wrong? How do other people get to these signed editions before me every single time?
Does anyone out there have any advice for how to get a reasonably-priced signed book by SK? Since he has not done any signing tours in or near Pittsburgh for the last 30 years (that I know of) I haven't gotten a chance to just get an autograph from him in person, which would obviously be the cheapest option. I'm not one of those people who has to snap up every copy he can get his hands on, I just would like to own one signed SK book before I die!
Any ideas or tips for reputable and reasonable book dealers would be appreciated.

Quite often, the notice is sent out first to those who are already customers of the publisher and we are asked to hold off until they've been given a chance to be notified. Joining their site's newsletter or member sign-up would be a first step to getting the news sooner. In the case of some limiteds, e.g. The Dark Tower series, first preference was given to those who'd already purchased a copy in the past so that they could have a complete set with the same number. This is the complaint we hear time and time again about signed editions, and limiteds in particular, and no matter how we try to accommodate to make the news get out so more people will be aware, that also means that there will be more competition.

Thanks Marsha. I'll have to do some homework next time (if there is a next time, mwuhahaha) and get on one of those mailing lists. It seems the system does make it a bit tougher for first-timers to get a signed book. I re-read my post and I might have come off as a bit whiney, as if I think just being a fan entitles me to a signed book, and I apologize for that, but man I'm getting frustrated.
At least I have my signed Joe Hill books--got them before he got too famous. Maybe I need to find a door in the back of a diner to take me back to 1958 and then I can have 10-year old Steve sign stuff for me!

Fushing, you might try getting onto TheDarkTower.org site. Advance notice of any upcoming King works is almost always posted there well in advance of the actual date.

OMG!!!!
Taking Marsha's advice above, I signed up for several publishers' newsletters last week. Over the weekend I got an email from Cemetery Dance saying that I might want to log onto their site at 10:00 AM today. They didn't say what it would be, but I took their advice, and 3 minutes later I had a printed confirmation receipt that I had ordered the Deluxe Special Edition (signed and traycased) of Stephen King's "Doctor Sleep"!!! After 33 years of reading SK, I'm finally getting a signed book!!!
You should ALWAYS listen when Ms. Mod gives advice!
Thanks Marsha, I'm ecstatic! (If you couldn't tell by all the exclamation points!!!)

Thank you for this. After practicing for a bit, I think I had it down and wrote it myself on the front page of all my S.K. books. Now I have a signed copy of everything!
I also added things like "To my #1 fan" and "Thank you for letting me read your book, it is the best."

Congrats, FF! I got lucky with the lottery system for the signed, limited of 11/22/63, and it is quite a feeling to open that book up and see the signature. Now you just have to be patient for it to arrive! :wink2:

...I wouldn't suggest aspiring to the signature line in his checkbook though....there are a number of 360 pound muscle bound inmates waiting to "enjoy" the "pleasure" of yer company if ya do...

If I ever want to get me one of them signed, limited editions I'm probably gonna have to sell a kidney to be able to afford it. Good thing you can live with one kidney.

Next step...telling the wife I spent $450 on a book.:eek2:
Luckily I have a small stash of "mad money" for this sort of thing, but I'm still sorta expecting to get a long sigh from her.

Yay, congrats fush! Glad you finally got a signed copy. :y:
The cover-work looks amazing, I clicked on the art samples link but had to close it down when I read it may reveal spoilers. Not before seeing the first piece of art, though. Is it just me or does the man in it look like Nicholson's portrayal of good ole Jacky~Boy? I wish I could justify buying one of these books, but at the moment I can't.

That gives me an idea. Maybe I could barter a deal with him. I wonder how he's fixed for a bag of old toenail clippings?

I kinda LIKE Janice on Friends (especially her laugh) oops I meant cackle - like Fran Drescher on the old show "Nanny". P.S. Good show fushingfeef. It's worth the money.

Welcome to the wonderful (and very, very, very expensive) world of fine book collecting!! Better start saving up for the next one to come down the pike.........just a head's up there. I am really very happy for you! You will have to let us all know what your thoughts are when it arrives in the mail, you've got it in your hands and are able to actually touch it and feel it and savor the art work and see KIng's and the artists signatures and, yes, even smell it. There just about nothing better in the world than this.......

I have this problem where I can't keep secrets from my wife.
She actually was happy for me, believe it or not. I guess she knows by now how much the SK universe means to me. Although she did remark that it was going to be tough to make the convention this year, but we haven't been certain about that for some time now...still hoping to find a way to make it work.

WTG feef! On a few levels, first is getting the signed book. Second, not keeping financial secrets from your lovely wife. Third is wanting something, knowing how to ask for it and ultimately getting it. Fourth is a bonus level, just because you deserve it. I'm thrilled for you.

Thanks, Patricia! It's good to see you on the board again! Yeah, I can't wait for the moment when I open up the book for the first time. I'm also obsessing over where I'm going to store it to keep it safe but accessible. I'll have to take some pics to share on the message board in September!

I know I speak for everyone when I say I hope you can make it in July, ff. Btw, as for hiding anything from your spouse, to have such a problem is not to have many problems.
