Hi all, I am working my way backwards through the King empire and since these two appear to have been released at roughly the same time, should I read one over the other first?

Doesn't really matter although personally I think reading Desperation first is the way to go.

Agree with MsMod and Blunthead- Desperation is best read first. Enjoy!

P.S. Is one better than the other or both about the same?

I'd read Desperation first, but it's one of my favourite King stories so I'm slightly biased. Enjoy!

I would read The Regulators second only because I think it is the more interesting and better book. It's like having dessert after dinner; both are good and satisfying, but the dessert is so much sweeter and indulgent and much better when saved for last!

I personally liked Regulators better but I think I may be in the minority.
I would read Desperation first as well.

...that is very subjective information, and only you can judge that-don't let our opinion sway your feelings....

I personally think that The Regulators might be a hair better, but they're close either way.
My take on it is that you should read Desperation first. Why? Because that's the one that has the name "Stephen King" on it.

I read Desperation first, & The Regulators about a month later. I love the echoes & references between the two books, & how the characters were the same, yet different. They are both so fast paced & entertaining, but I would recommend reading Desperation first. I think it sets up the scenario for The Regulators perfectly & also answers some of the questions initially posed by Desperation.

right now...from afar...not having reread either and from what i remember; i'd pick Desperation as the better book...
now..i did not dislike the regulators...but i did read them back to back: loved desperation...one of his best, tho not top ten...
but those 'echos' some have mentioned...i saw and felt them throughout 'the regulators'...and, for me...at that time, they kinda got in the way of purely enjoying TR on its own level
i remember wishing i'd put a book or two spacing bewtix 'em...something to take off the edges a bit
