View Full Version : Suggestions for the movie cast of 11/22/63...? [May contain spoilers]

Hey everyone,

I was wondering everyones thoughts of what the cast should be for 11/22/63? I saw a thread that had a few suggestions about casting, but it wasn't entirely devoted to that topic. Anyway, I'll kick it off with my suggestions/ideas:

Jake/George: Ryan Gosling or Leo Dicaprio

Sadie: Charlize Theron (if she can pull off looking 28, she'd be perfect). Though if Rachel McAdams were taller, I'd say her.

Deke: Tom Hanks? I know he's probably too young for Deke but I think he'd be perfect for the role.. If not Hanks, maybe Gene Hackman or Warren Beatty?

Ellie Dockerty: Jessica Lange

Lee Harvey Oswald: Joseph Gordon Levitt

Al Templeton: Dustin Hoffman

George De Mohrenschildt: Donald Sutherland or Anthony Hopkins

Harry Dunning: John Turturro

This clearly is far from the whole cast, and I know my suggestions are far from perfect, but they're just to get this thread kickstarted and to see everyone else's thoughts on the topic...

So, what are your thoughts on who should be casted in the movie?

Pictured Gwyneth Paltrow as Sadie when I was reading the book.

I kind of pictured Deke as Tim Robbins. Even though Robbins probably doesn't look old enough, even with the white hair. And for Sadie I pictured someone Emma Stone-ish. Your cast looks pretty good, though.

I'm not very good at keeping up with actors and actresses names, it's just not one of things I do. But having read a similar thread a couple of weeks ago without an immediate impression, I now have one for Jake, Brandon Routh, the actor that played in Superman Returns. He seems to fit the bill for tall and about the correct age, lead experience, not over-exposed. I like Gwyneth for Sadie, but I believe she is too old to pull of the part.

If her blonde hair and blue eyes weren't critical in terms of casting (and they don't really have anything to do with the plot, so I wouldn't assume why it would be), I think Katie Holmes would be a good Sadie since she has the height and size of what is described in the book, and she already has that southern twang in her voice, as well as that insecure smile that she devastates the audience with. I definitely didn't picture her as Sadie while reading the book, but it's just a suggestion.

And a bit of irony as she played Jacqueline Kennedy in The Kennedys miniseries.

Jake/George: Paul Rudd (not sure of height)

Sadie: Robin Wright (not sure of height)

Deke: James Woods

Ellie Dockerty: Dianne Wiest

Lee Harvey Oswald: Paul Giamatti

Al Templeton: Michael Chiklis

George De Mohrenschildt: Brian Cox

Harry Dunning: Gary Sinise

The ages are probably all wrong, but these are the faces that I see going along with the characters.

It's scary how well she fit the role of Jacqueline Kennedy in that series... Looks-wise she was, as clearly depicted by the picture above, a spot on match. She also did a hell of a job delivering that role, and along with Barry Pepper, I think they made that show.

I'm of two minds about Giamatti for a possible Oswald, on the one hand it's a matter of looks and weight, on another I have to admit he's the kind of actor that could give something to that portrayal, I'm not sure what and this doesn't mean I'm on the wagon for him.

I do know I got Pepper screwed up with Giovanni Ribisi, however I remember thinking it would be ironic for Pepper to play the Oswald right after playing JFK.

I don't know, I don't keep up w/all the new actors & actresses either...but as I was reading the story, some parts I could really see happening & I thought to myself that I could picture a great movie based on this story. Of course, it'll never be as good as the book, but if done right, it would be a movie that I would love to see. :)

tenngolfer

There was so much of the book dedicated to the height issues around Sadie and George, I think the casting director should try to find actors and actresses of relatively tall stature to honor the "feel" of the storyline as much as possible.

My apologies, your right, I did get Kinear and Pepper mixed up. Damn hands type too fast for my own good.

Having time to think about it, I've come to the conclusion that of the two actors Barry Pepper or Giovanni Ribisi, Ribisi is the one you want to have for the role of Oswald. I think Pepper could do it, yet he has this tough guy image going for him and in the book Oswald is described "Just a little kid", in other words not a tough guy but a shrimp with a mean streak.

Ribisi doesn't look like anyone's idea of a a tough guy, yet he's a good actor and with those haunted eyes he could potentially pull it off.

Paul Giamatti is a great actor but I think he is too old to play Oswald. People may forget that Oswald was only 24 when he shot JFK.

I think you may have potential Green Card Man in Anthony Mackey (Adjustment Bureau). The only problem there is if it will give the audience the wrong idea and if casting him for that role (if at all) is too much repetition for the actor. Either way, you've got to admit he'd be a good candidate.

The ages are probably all wrong, but these are the faces that I see going along with the characters.

Personally, I don't think ages or heights are important. I know they were mentioned several times in the book but I think they don't really have that much effect on the plot and it's more important to have people who bring this thing to life. So , if we ignore height and age, I think many of your suggestions are spot on but I think Tom Hanks would be beyond awesome as Jake/George. Robin Wright was amazing as Mary Surratt in Conspiritor and she would be perfect as Sadie. James Woods would be very good as Deke but I think Tommy Lee Jones would fit in that role as well. The Oswald role is dicey and age is important in his case. While I really like Donald Sutherland as De Mohrenschildt, Brian Cox was amazing in RED and he certainly needs to be in this movie, if not in this role then as one of the other important Russian ex-pats. I wonder if Katie Holmes could pull off the role of Marina Oswald? How say you other Constant Readers.

PrisonerNumber6
June 12th, 2012, 12:10 PM
You know, the more I think it over I'm convinced the role of Oswald will have to be the one part that will have to go to an unknown actor, someone fresh out of the box who's also a fairly good look alike and can act the part.

What led me to this conclusion is that every Name actor I mentally placed in the role was too much of a distraction from the character. Instead of thinking, Hey it's Oswald! I kept thinking, it's just so and so pretending to be Oswald. I'm coming to see that the trick with this character is you want to be focused on the real historical personality and not on some actor playing a part.

In that sense, I was sort of right when I said Gary Oldman was still the only know name actor who could do it, however whoever pointed out he was too old is also right. So that leaves an as yet undiscovered up and comer for the role.

What do you think? Agree or disagree?

Jim Parsons is an interesting choice. Since I only saw him in The Big Bang Theory I'm having a hard time picturing him as Oswald, but he's an awesome actor who I think can pull it off. Still my first choice for the role is Casey Affleck.

I agree with those who mentioned Ryan Gosling as Jake/George. In my opinion, he's one of the best actors out there today.

As for Sadie, maybe someone like Jessica Chastain. (Loved her in "the Help") She is a redhead, but that could easily be changed for the role.
I think Rachel McAdams would be great too....although would be awkward for Ryan and Rachel.

I like the idea of Jim Parsons as Oswald. Would be interesting to see him in a dramatic role. I enjoy Jim on "Big Bang", he really carries that show.

Heh. Well Mr. President (I'm assuming here that the last post above was made the the sixteenth leader of the U.S. who starred in that Vampire movie) I wouldn't know about Oldman for any role in the film. It would be an irony if they did find role for him though, I admit that.

If by some weird chance Kev Costner lands the role of Jake, my only question to him would be "What are you going for some kind of trifecta here? What gives?"

Jake/George: Edward Norton
Bradley Cooper
Stephen Moyor
James Marsden

Al Templeton: Christopher Lee
Clint Eastwood
Gene Hackman

Lee H. Oswald: Ralph Fiennes
Ben Foster
Todd Lowe
Casey Affleck

Harry Dunning: Mads Mikkelsen
John Turturro

Frank Dunning: Matthew Fox

Sadie; Vera Farmiga

Just my opinion but I think this would be a great cast. These would be my picks in this order. I do like the prospect of Ryan Gosling but I think that Edward Norton would be more appropriate. Ralph Fiennes and Todd Lowe are a little older than I picture Oswald in the book, but I feel it would be manageable.

I'm not so sure about the idea of Steve Carel as James Hosty. As for JFK and Jackie O, I think they would have more impact if they were limited to TV, newsreel and documentary footage, and for the scenes where they have to take part in the movie JFK's role should be more implied than heard or scene. I just think it gives him more of a presence and lend a sense of mystery to things if it's just a scene with Jake talking into a phone and listening to JFK yet we never here the other side of the conversation. As for Jackie O fans out there, well, I hate to say this, but she's one of the elements you could cut out without losing much. Sorry.

As for the most important role of Oswald, I think Doug Hutchinson could do it. I also think Jeff Demunn would be a good Deke. Plus, they are both King veterans in a way

I can't believe that nobody has mentioned R. Lee Ermey (Gunny Hartman from Full Metal Jacket Fame)to play Al Templeton. Think about it, he was a Marine, has the gravelly voice and can pull of the grumpy old man well. While we are on Full Metal Jacket actors, Vincent D'Onofrio would make a good Harry (old of course)or Frank Dunning, but I do like George Clooney as Frank as it was even mentioned that he looked like George Clooney. Nicole Forester (Boss) would make a good Sadie. I agree with Robert Duvall to play Deke. Also, here's an obscure one-Diana Scarwid to play Mimi-she can pull off the small town Southern older lady thing well. Kathy Bates as Marguerite Oswald would be a wise choice. I also like the idea of Hugh Laurie as the Yellow Card Man, or even Will Ferrell could pull it off...remember Chaz from Wedding Crashers? Ben Affleck as Jake would be a good choice I think.

I hate to jump on the Christian Bale bandwagon, but he'd be great as Jake. If you haven't seen his performance in The Fighter, you should. It will make you realize he's more than just an action hero guy.

Al - Dayton Callie. You may not know who this guy is if you haven't watched Deadwood or Sons Of Anarchy, but he'd do this role justice.

Yellow & Green Card Men - I'll stick by what I said in a thread months ago. Christopher Lloyd and Michael J. Fox. Excellent actors who would be PERFECT for these roles, and it gives a nod and a wink to what is proabably the most succesful time travel franchise ever.

And me as an extra bc that's my birthday. Which is why I bought the book. I was born in Dallas a couple hours after JFK died. My mother said it was because she went into labor a month early because of the shock....but now I think it probably had more to do with the heavy smoking while pregnant.

Oh my god, I love this thread so much. This is my first comment here, I just finished the book yesterday after a week of almost nonstop reading apart from work, and I had such a hard time picturing Sadie. But after reading every single one of the comments I just know what I pictured her like! Thank you so much tenngolfer, Rosamund Pike is the spitting image of the Sadie Dunhill that lives in my head.

As for Jake I first pictured him sort of like Channing Tatum but then he morphed in my head to a more of a Mark Ruffalo type, and since I'm a huge Ruffalo lover I'd have to choose him. Plus I don't thing Tatum would do the part justice (Sorry if there are any fans of his here. I like him but I don't think he is good for the part).
And while I was reading I just couldn't help but picture Frank Dunning as Eric Dane. I just saw him as that part so clearly. I think he would be amazing as that crazy son of a bitch!

I don't do that. In fact I hate when movies precede books, b/c it really does ruin your ability to imagine your OWN characters.
He's the one who said that too. A long time ago, he said movies limit imagination b/c they show you what the character looks like and there's no way you can imagine details for yourself. So I always try to read the book first and THEN watch the movie.
But Stephen King's books are the only ones where the movie is even halfway similar to the book anyway. I watched a movie on Chiller called Ghoul, by Brian Keene (the book was anyway), but the movie deviated from the book in a major way. He said so, but only in terms of wanting to know everyone's reaction to it, which I couldn't give anyway.
I'm glad the movie varied, b/c I've never read Ghoul all the way through. It's kind of intense and my work was also intense during that time (I'm a paramedic) and I had to put the book aside.

I'm so far out of touch with todays actors, you could show me a bunch of a list hollywood stars and I would stare blankly at you. But having seen The Green Mile again recently, and currently re-reading 11/22/63, I could not help but to think "There is your Lee Oswald for the movie right there" everytime I saw Percy, so I would say Doug Hutchison, he did such an amazing job of making you hate the Percy character in Green Mile.

As it's a King film, Kathy Bates would be perfect as Oswalds Mum.

I'm listening to the audiobook and am only to the part where George/Jake reveals his true mission and who he is, to Sadie, so I don't know the ending.

Regardless, I have the perfect actor for Jake/George A. - John Hamm.

Firstly, he's a little older but who cares. He already has that middle 20th century swagger down in his current hit series role, he's a good actor, and I could see him playing the sort of reserved maybe even timid teacher Jake but also being the man who can be tough and kill when he has to as George. It would be cool to see him with long hair in the 21st century and then have that same slicked back hair in Mad Men driving in his hot convertible when he goes back in time. In my opinion, the movie shouldn't be exactly like the book because honestly, I don't think this book translates well to a hit movie if done exactly the same If the actors are off a little by age, physical description, etc....who cares.

Sadie - Reese Witherspoon - adorable and could pull off a sweet, sexy yet naive Sadie. Oh Oh Oh Suga!!!!!!!!! ..height not important.

Deke - Tommy Lee Jones - He can play a tough ol Texan bastard who'll go have a ****ty beer with ya!

and to throw in some former Steven King book to movie alumni

Al Templeton - Jack Nicholson Ok, you say "too old"? Well, if the actor is older, there are many possibilities, such as his life has run out due to old age and he must pass the torch to Jake...which essentially is the real story or he made several attempts at changing the future, but failed many times. Hollywood can do their magic to make the actor look younger/older and healthy/sick from one day to the next.

or James Caan - same as above concerning age..

or Tim Robbins - My pick if sticking closer to script..very good Actor. Just realized he would also be good for Jake/George, even though he'd be older than the book character.

Ellie Dockerty - I don't even remember her age or physical description in the book but I keep thinking Kathy Bates!

...I haven't really thought about the other characters.

Man I must be bored today...
