Hi All,

I'm a long time King fan, but new to the forum, and have just finished reading The Stand (uncut) and I really do think it's the best book I have ever read. A big statement I know, but it's knocked Dracula off top spot for me...

So, so involving, and I think its biggest strength was the 3 dimensional nature of the characters - you really do care about these people.

I am a film critic/ journalist, and am currently putting together an article on the proposed feature film version of The Stand, essentially a "wish-list" of what we want to see. I'm going to suggest a trilogy - Captain Trips, On The Border and The Stand.

The bulk of it will be putting together my dream cast. I know Stephen King himself has spoken about this recently, as well as in the preface to the novel, but I was wondering if anyone on here had any thoughts as to who could play who?

To kick things off, I had thought of;

Tim Olyphant as Stu Redman
Jake Gyllenhall as Nick Andros
Christian Bale as Randall Flagg

Look forward to hearing from you!

Cheers guys.

A tall order-but the first name that leaps to mind is...wait for it...GARY BUSEY as Flagg!...

Let's do an off Broadway on man show, with Gary Busey playing all the characters. Gary Busey Presents THE STAND.

I prefer a bunch of nobody people playing the various folk.

I've loved this quote from Dostoyevsky (and a variation by Harry Crews):

paraphrased...you won't like me and I don't care:

Men to whom God is dead worship one another....that is Crews...Dostoyevksy is something like that, and I suspect Harry read it too, like who else, Hemingway...sure, him...who else...King?...read his...Dostoy's Devils and tell me SK hadn't...how'd Dosty put it...

I don't have it and though I could track it down for you...I would prefer not to.

Color me Bartleby.

...and he'll STILL be cuter than Molly Ringwald, and with-dare I say-better dentition...

Welcome to the board, first of all. The Stand has always been my favorite as well. Some interesting choices as cast. I always thought Flagg was the hardest to cast, But you may have nailed it.

Thanks for suggestions all.

Glad you like the Flagg casting! In my mind the character looked just like Bale in The Fighter...

Article should be up tomorrow, I'm having a bit of trouble with Harold Lauder and Tom Cullen, I've got a couple of ideas for both but nothing concrete yet...

How about Jonah Hill for Harold Lauder and Aaron Eckhart for Tom Cullen?

I don't know. After seeing the mini-series many times, Gary Sinise will always be Stu for me, just like Bill Fagerbakke will always be Tom. That's not to say I won't watch it if they do a remake, but I just have trouble picturing anyone else portraying those characters. I like the idea of Gary Busey as Flagg, the only problem is that he's about 30 years too old for the part. I think Jonah Hill could definitely work as Harold, but he has lost a lot of weight recently which makes it a little bit less of a good fit. Overall though, I'd have to say I agree with omm poppa mow mow that I would prefer the majority of the cast to be relatively unknown actors. It just makes it more believable that way.
