This new 2011-2012 school year at Washburn District High School in Washburn, Maine, I'm teaching a new writing course called On Writing, in tribute to Mr. King. Students will write articles for a class newspaper or class magazine and will publish various books, such as poetry and children's books. For homework, they will read selections from Mr. King's On Writing book.

If you'd like to follow what my class will be learning, check out my website at: https://sites.google.com/site/mrsthurstonswebsite/home

I am honored to be teaching this course. I just wish every student had access to a laptop. I'll make it work as best as I can though. Any suggestions from anyone would be great!

Also, I might add, Mr. King and his wife Tabitha have been very generous to our school. They have given our school Nooks for our library. As an English teacher, I have seen MANY students reading books via the Nooks. The Kings' contribution has made a long-lasting impact on the lives of our students.

Hi,

Welcome to the MB, and keep posting!

Can I suggest that you introduce passages from Dance Macabre?

Bernie Goldberg has some great books out there about how to be a journalist and how not to be a "journalist"...perhaps those would fit? Or I suspect not.

Your students are very fortunate to have a course like the one you will teach. Writing course where so dull and uncreative in my HS days.

That sounds great! I wish I would've read more and been interested in writing when I was in high school. You'll be putting tools in your students' hands they'll use for years to come. Much appreciation to you and the Kings for helping young writers. I've been through On Writing probably 10 times between my hardback copy and audiobook copy.
My hat's off to you. Please update this topic occasionally during the school year, and I'll check your website as well.

Long days and pleasant nights.

Spidey says writing courses were so dull in her day--I don't think we even had writing courses in high school in my day!!

What a wonderful class you are offering!! Will definitely check in from time to time. THANKS for telling us about this!!
