My husband and I are watching Shawshank Redemption, and talking about what an amazing movie it is -- and how happy Stephen King must be with the translation of novel to film. But then we came up with so many other great translations: Green Mile, Carrie, The Shining, Stand By Me, Misery...

So my question is: We all know there have been a lot of great films made based on Stephen King's novels. But of them all, which one is Stephen King most happy with/proud of?

Dying to know -

I am in the process of reading Carrie again and I think that movie is a good adaptation. Sissy Spacek was so good in the role that as I'm reading the book, I can only picture Sissy Spacek as Carrie. None of the other movie characters jump out at me like that as I'm reading but Sissy was memorable.

I love to read the books then watch the movie.

When someone really nails a part, you can never read the book again without seeing that actor in your mind. Sissy Spacek is Carrie and I don't think that image can ever be replaced in my mind.

Yes of course, that's why I wanted to know which ONE he was happiest with. There are many really good ones.
It doesn't make the others any less good (if that's a phrase) to choose a favorite.

When asked the question in the past, I've never heard or seen him answer with just one.

It's a bit like asking which one of your children you love the most. :smile2:

:( I knew you were going to say that.

But I'm not asking which of his own stories he likes best. It's more like "which director did the best job of translating written word to film." Or "which one best captured the original vision." You see? It's more like "which of your kids' FRIENDS do you like best?" Or "which of your kids did the best at the science fair?"

I have always enjoyed Stand By Me as an overall good one....not afraid to let the kiddies watch it. Got to beware of 'nightmare inducers' like IT. (I always put the wee ones to bed when that one is on!) We DID all watch the Stand and had no nightmares-from the kiddies-but the daughter-in-law couldnt take it. One would have thought we had 'smell-a-vision' from her reactions! "It's only a movie, dear" admonishions certainly didnt help either.lol Might have been a bit unwise to sneak up on her an grab her leg after show! (told her I was sorry, but she didnt believe me. next time I'll try not to laugh when I appologize.:wink2:

I understand what you're saying. Still the same answer as I gave in Post #7, though. :smile2:

Nothing wrong with having equal favourites .... I personally couldnt choose between Shawshank and Misery ... doesnt mean I like those stories the best but I sure couldnt pick one over the other as my favourite movie adaptation.

Shawshank will always remain a favorite, since I was working in the city where primary filming took place and had some good friends who appeared in it...and, I also feel that it really captured the essence of the story-which is a rare commodity when translating written word to film...

Yes.
Just watch the special features on any of these DVD`s, Steve appears in all three of them and nothing but praise from him for these movies.
