during the late 80's early 90's i was very ill, diagnosed terminal and was sick for several
years. during that time i read or listened to lots of books. many by King, some by Koontz and others. there was one book, a thriller about a killer(maybe superhuman) and someone who was trying to solve the crimes. it was intense and typical King or Koontz type novel.

the unique part of the story was that it had another character-a dog. maybe a lab or retriever? the story was told by all parties, the killer, the savior and very humorously, by the dog. it was like you were hearing the dogs thoughts during the plot. the dog was doing his thing like the rest and they eventually all came together from different stories within the book. the dog smelled the killer and 'he' smelled 'different' -not right. these are
the only things i remember about this story. it was suspenseful and funny. i thought it was a book by Koontz called Dragon Tears but cannot find any info. Maybe its a King?

Has anyone read or remember such a tale?
appreciated,
BJ

It does sound suspiciously to me like Dean R. Koontz's WATCHERS, about a super intelligent golden retriever who teams up with a man to track down a genetically created monster which kills people.

Could it possibly be Koontz's "Watchers"?

There is definitely a Koontz book called Dragon Tears and parts of it are told from a dog's perspective.

Synopsis of the Koontz book (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_Tears) you mention doesn't sound like what you read. Doesn't ring a bell for me as a King work; I'm not tremendously familiar with Koontz, so I'll have to defer, other than wondering if it was his novel "The Watchers. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watchers_%28novel%29)"

Not King, probably Koontz. Reminds me of his "Darkest Night of the Year," but I think that's more recent. Good book, though.

I also highly praise Garth Stein's "The Art of Racing in the Rain," as far as dog books go.

I read this on your recommendation--as with many other books--and it made me cry a few times.
A lovely story that really made me look at my dog and wonder what he was thinking!
I've since passed it on to a couple of friends who also enjoyed it.
Don't think I've been disappointed with any of your book suggestions yet, maybe you should start your own "book club."

Hi,

For those who like 'dog' stories, can I recommend James Herbert's excellent 'Fluke', and in fact James Herbert's work in general?

Hello! Might want to try "Darkest Evening of the Year" by Dean Koontz.
