why does the novel end with october 1972, june 1975 i don't get the date references.

When Steve puts dates at the ends of his books, they refer to the dates in which he was writing it although he may have been working on other projects in between. As in this case he started it in October of 1972 and finished the first draft, then went on to other writing but the final edits were completed in June 1975.
