One Man Ka-Tet

Hello all,
I am new to the DT series and have to say....BEST READ EVER!!! I just have a quick question about going todash. Does one have to be asleep or can one be awake when drawn into going todash? Roland and the rest of his ka-tet are all sleeping when it happens, but father Callahan seems to have gone todash while awake. A simple technicality really but I am curious nonetheless. Since starting the series in mid-December I have gone non-stop and am finishing up Wolves tonight. I have read a lot in my time and have to say that the DT series is hands down the best ever!
