Dark and Malignant baby?

Very early in the novel, it says Stu's wife bore a dark and malignant baby. I've already read The Stand and dont remember anything about that. What does that mean?

Stu's wife died from cancer a little over a year after they were married. I would presume ovarian or cervical cancer, hence the dark malignant baby.

I thought maybe a hydatidiform mole.

A hydatidiform mole is a rare mass or growth that forms inside the uterus at the beginning of a pregnancy. It is a type of gestational trophoblastic disease.
