Mordred

I am about 200 pages into the book and already Mordred has made a huge impression on me. He is easily the most revolting entity I have encountered in literature, or any other medium for that matter. The fact that he is a " were-spider" is bad enough, but that only scratches the surface. I think when one encounters a child that is evil (The Good Son anyone?... and yes, I believe they do exist in reality as well) they are disarmed and taken aback by the horror of it all in a way that is difficult to articulate. But to run across a being that is fully possessed of a malicious intellegence from the moment of birth is something that shakes a persons perceptions to their very foundations. Horrifying is a sorry adjective for this blasphemy, but I cannot think of another right now. (On a side note, does anyone remember the 80's horror flick called Angel Heart starring Mickey rourke and Robert De Niro? Great movie, though outdated. There is a scene at the end where a child of the same "age" as Mordred looks at the protagonist with glowing eyes and points at him in condemnation. Pretty chilling at the time.)

Here's a bleeding heart for you. I kind of feel sorry for Mordred.
Mind you, I wouldn't dream of giving him a comforting "there-there, sad little were-spider-boy" hug. I'd run like the wind (with a load in my pants) if I ever were to run into him, but he was born into a world that feared and hated him, he was damned and alone with no hope of redemption. :sad:

Angel Heart freaked me out btw, and that's not easy to do.

I think that if his "red daddy" was not influencing him, he would actually be able to be part of their lives...and actually help his "white daddy" against the forces to destroy the tower. i think that he really wanted that to happen, but everything else that was non-human was telling him the opposite.

Mordred is the classic outsider- not loved by any except she who bore him, and he ate her. Although you have to pity him, you also have to reject him because he is The Outsider-- complicated feelings about this one~

Even Roland had complicated feelings about Mordred. Felt sorry for him. But, you kinda gotta kill him, cuz he's pretty determined to kill you, right? Jake even felt jealous of him, for being Roland's "real" son. Euw.

Eh, I too felt a bit sorry for Mordred, 'specially in SoS when he was in baby form and he fell off the chair... Maybe it's cuz I just had a baby or sumthin I duno :dunno:

Mordred wasn't anything a huge can of Ortho "Icky Bug-B-Gon" couldn't have handled...but, yes-he was a horrifying entity. I however could not drum up any gentle emotions for him-King created a character in big, hairy and creepy that flat out revolted me(not as much as Reality TV, but close).

I agree with you there completely. I didnt find him too creepy to be honest, i think he could easily have be swayed towards being "good", there certainly seemed to be plenty of indications towards that possibility. But i felt really sad for him.
