after reading the DT series and, I have to say, I'm having a difficult time getting into this book. Maybe I'm just fatigued. Will it pick up or should I wait a while before trying to dive in again?

I had the same problem with Insomnia. I tried reading it twice, each time getting a little further in to it. I picked it up a few months ago and was finally able to read it cover to cover.

Hi,

Yes, I'd persevere and the DT connections will become more obvious the further you get into it, and it does pick up.

I found this one at a book fair for 3 dollars, took it home, and also had a hard time getting into the story. The pace does pick up after a while, and it turns out to be an interesting read.

I read this one when I was 14--wow, nearly 16years ago--and can't really remember the details.
I know it took me a while to get into it. Think it's due a re~read.
Wonder if it will cure my insomnia? :eyebrow:

I've read Insomnia twice, and I had no problems getting into it..

Wow, interesting to hear how others had a hard time getting into this book. So far, it is my favorite SK book. I read it over 10 years ago and I have been wanting to read it again.

Sometimes I feel ashamed when I read a book and then years later I can't remember a thing about it. Anyone else? I remember the basic plot, and have some mental images that stay with me but the fine details are lost. sigh.

I am re-reading Insomnia (about #4 re-read) ad i just finished the DT series.

Dunno why you finding it slow.. it picks up rather quick IMO Maybe a DT series withdrawal? ;-)

Hi,

Aye, indeed, to me that's the one sacving grace of getting older, they seem like new books.

Good ol' CRS syndrome.

Wow, looking back at when I started this thread, it really has taken me a while to get into this book. I'm finally moving along at a pretty steady pace. For a while there, I couldn't read more than a paragraph a day without putting it down. Some interesting character development from Mr. King (as usual).

Just finished it last night. Honestly, I was a little disappointed in the ending. Just like in DT series, the Crimson King is a wimp. He turns into a giant catfish? Really? It only takes an earring to defeat him? So much for the ultimate bad guy with the power to destroy worlds. After that, when Ralph dies, it was a better ending for me. Knowing what happens with Patrick was important in reading this book; otherwise, I would have felt really cheated by the book.

I'm with you on this one - well mostly...it's not my favorite book (The Dark Tower Series fills that spot, with The Stand breathing down it's neck), but it's near the top. I've read it 3 times. I'm exactly like you with the whole remembering the basic plot but forgetting details etc., so when I'm rereading, I spend a lot of time thinking "Oh yeah, now I remember!" Don't be ashamed - there's an upside to rereading a good book - you know you aren't going to be disappointed!

Thanks rewo. Nice to know I'm not the only one. I just started reading The Gunslinger and am really loving it, but I still think Insomnia is up there. I'd probably think it even more so if I knew all the references to The Dark Tower that I hear people speak off all the time. =)

Hi,

And I can't wait! But, since I haven't read Insomnia in years, I will probably not see them! Maybe I should start re-reading it at the same time as The Gunslinger! Do the references even start in Gunslinger or are they in later volumes?

Hi,

Well, Insomnia was/is a different book in the context of DT7, but leave a re-read until you've finished DT IMO (at least, that's what I did) and I think you'll enjoy it just fine (and understand more of what Insomnia's about!), but you'll probably want to re-read several books ('Salems Lot, Black House etc) then anyway.

Back to The Gunslinger with you! LOL

It certainly isn't a page scorcher to start-but Uncle Stevie does what he does best, and delivers anti-Z's in spades!

I liked insomnia, and I believe you should definitely give it another try, but I also understand a thing or two about reading-fatigue, especially when you're done with such an epic juorny. I don't believe in "forcing" books. If you feel it's not right for you right now, put it down, give it a rest and try again in awhile.

Glad to hear you've started your Dark Tower journey - you will not be disappointed...keep an eye out for those references!!

you need to read the gunslinger series, it will explain alot, especially at the end of The Dark Tower VII. It explains the kid he is protecting in the arena drawing the picture of the dark tower, explains Ed Depeneu, and some other things, but you are right about the Catfish thing.

I have read the Gunslinger/DT series. That is one reason I was unhappy with the ending.

I read it some years ago, interesting. Especially the two bald short doctors that appear out of nowhere. That stood out for me forgot some of the other parts though.
