View Full Version : Cruise Missile?

I did not research this, so I could be wrong. I am pretty sure a 'cruise missle' as described in Under the Dome is powered by a jet engine and could not reach speeds of 3500 to 3800 miles per hour as described. It also would not create a blast wave or ignite the countryside as it passed an area. They are also subsonic, so no sonic boom. The description sounds more like a rocket-propelled missile which would not have the terrain-following capabilities of the missile as described in the book. Just sayin'. I suppose if Mr. King can invent the Dome, he's free to invent a new kind of weapon too.

Exactly--it's fiction! Part of reading fiction is being able to suspend your disbelief. It might matter more if he was writing a technical manual. Just sayin'. :smile2:

I really wish he had instead opted for one of those pumpkin launcher catapult thingys.
I'd believe it. Because I'm crazy.

Personally, I think the PLCT'ys would be perfect!

PS cruise missiles can be subsonic or supersonic and reach mach speeds...
Focus on the story dude! ;-)
but hey if you get enjoyment of finding details that are or maybe wrong
to each their own!

Um....
A story with Leatherhead aliens who stick a forcefield dome over a town like a glass bowl over an anthill and the unrealistic thing that bothered you was the impossible speed of a cruise missile?
:)
Welcome to the board and enjoy!

Quite frankly, I don't give a happy rat's rump about having very much reality mingled in with my fiction.....

I'm thinkin' maybe the dynamic duo from "Mythbusters" could have been launched at this alien construct/plaything and their pointy little melons would have pierced it!:biggrin2:

I think some of you spend way too much time dissecting and analyzing King's work. I simply sit back, relax, and quickly become enthralled.

You know certain things sort of point to this being set in futuristic times not far maybe just a year or two from now, no certainty that it is but possible and the military in the near future may have these capabilities.
OR maybe Mr.King has some military information that the general public does not...
Either way good find, you gave us something to ponder.

I think the basic problem with these sort of "errors" is that they tend to drop the reader's "suspension of belief" that is usually required by any work of fiction. You place yourself into the story, and when something occurs that brings you out of it, it's annoying. I had that happen to me a couple times during Under the Dome, but overall it's still a great book.

Pretty sure it's set in an alternate universe, with very similar and yet different specifications to our world. There are some textual references here and there that may lead one to believe this...
