A text error in Under the Dome

I've tried to contact the publisher, but to no avail...just wanted to let anyone who is interested know that at the bottom of page 125, Julia Shumway's dog's name spontaneously changes from "Horace" to "Hector". It's been bugging me since I noticed it, so I had to tell someone!!!

There have been a few baddies. Towards the end of my reading today, (P. 492, Section 19 [interesting] of "Feeling It" I was very sidetracked by Andrea crashing on the "chaise longue.")

Chaise lounge? It's not embarassing, but it is a bit irritating.

chaise longue (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaise_longue) is correct -- longue is French for "long" and this means a long chair. It has degenerated into "lounge" but there's nothing wrong with the original term.

Do you mean the last sentence of page 125? It says Horace in my copy..

I sit corrected. I imagine it was 'longeur' originally, and became 'lounger,' as in Barca.

It didn't work for me, as I am not reading the French version. Just write "chaise" and leave it at that =)

No - on page 128 the book talks about Andrea slipping in her driveway 4 or 5 years ago...and she cracked 2 discs in her back.

So she had 4-5 years to lose her pounds :wink2:

you also might have notice that the term "k-turn" is used twice, and the first time it's in normal text, and the second time the k is in bold. too lazy too look up page numbers

What do right wingers have to do with identifying mistakes in a text???

I'm an independent author and it bothers me tremendously when an error is pointed out. People do make mistakes. I'm wondering if Stephen King even writes the stuff that comes out under his name. Since he such a far left liberal maybe he expects money for doing nothing like the rest of them.

I'm not bothered by this small error... Ms mod. Please tell King he did a wonderful job writing this and I am enjoying this book very much.. (I'm on page 670), But what I can't figure out, is why it suddenly turns into spanish then to chinese... I've had to learn two other languages.

I too noticed the discrepancy with Horace/Hector early in the book. Finished the whole thing last night, but not before finding another goof. Toward the end, "Chef" Bushey is thinking about those who raped his ex-wife "Sandy." Hmmm... seems to me it was "Sammy"?

And, as much as I love SK's writing, I'm totally bummed about this one. The ending was weak at best, and realizing he used at least two other already-done concepts within the book. Anyone remember "The Andromeda Strain"? The other wasn't dissimilar to episodes of "The Twilight Zone" or a Star Trek show.

C'mon Steve - surely you have more original thoughts locked up in that brilliant brain of yours???

Wow, I really loved this book in a way I haven't loved a book since "The Stand." Kudos to Mr. King on a great job! And, kudos to all of you awesome nitpickers! I noticed all of the errors you've already pointed out with the exception of the dog's name changing. Amazing!

Anyway, I caught one more error that I haven't seen anyone else mention. This is on page 629 of the first edition hardcover. This is where Thurston Marshall is treating Sammy Bushey, who has finally made it to the hospital. He pronounces her name in the French style, as "Bouchez," which prompts Sammy to recall "that in grade school the boys had called her Bushey the Tushie."

Now, either she was a VERY young bride, or there are alarming degrees of consanguinity within her marriage. Because her husband is Phil Bushey, and therefore she shouldn't have been a "Bushey" herself in grade school.

Still and all, a great book, and one I'd love to see come to the small screen as a miniseries.

I don't remeber the Horace/Hector error, but, before his promotion, was Barbie a Captain or a Lieutenant? The book says Captain a couple of times early on, then Lieutenant every time after. There's also a sentence describing the last town meeting that mentions how "every almost seat was taken." That's either an error, or a way of saying that the chairs were all broken. There were a few other things I noticed I enjoyed the book enough that I could overlook most.

The job I work in we have to edit a LOT of written content. It's an impossible job. I don't think there has ever been a book or manual published withotu a typo somewhere. Most of these errors, I didn't even notice when i was reading, so it's a human thing to miss minute details occassionally. In the end, WHO CARES? The book was great!!!

Just finished reading it. It was an enjoyable read. I noticed several of the errors that were pointed out here. Horace becoming Hector definitely made me stop and go back and make sure I hadn't missed something. I bought the book at Target, so I just figured after it was already printed the publisher saw the mistake and said, "Crap, better send this batch to Target. Those people will never notice."

If you re-read page 611 CAREFULLY you will see that Junior hallucinated shooting Carter in the eye.

It reads:
"Then Junior stood over him and shot him again and again and ag---
"Junes?"
Junior shook his head to clear away the vision---so vivid it was hallucinatory---and realized his hand was actually gripping the butt of the pistol. "

Then they BOTH proceed to burn down the office. :smile2:
