I've been greatly tempted to drive that way. I live in North Carolina again, so Maine is much closer then when I lived in Florida
I may try and go there this coming summer :D

My sister and I are trying to plan a trip (need my picture taken in front of that gate!) this spring. Have to check out lots of stuff first. Make sure he's not here in Wisconsin for a book signing or something while we're out there! That would be a bummer. Want to see all the places mentioned in books, real or not! Would like tips from others who've made been there about what not to miss.

we thought about heading out that way this year. went west, instead. never been. but, looking at the map, any map of that general area, all that road congestion...guess if you've been on the road enough and you've seen the results of the way people drive...what's it like driving around that area? same as everywhere i s'pose, guy in the next lane, reading a book and changing lanes...and cell phones now!...yippee!...be great to get t-boned by some rising star busy text-messaging their aunt in sheboygan...maybe come in from the north?

I went up summer before last. I already had my plane tickets to see SK at the political fund-raiser that was nixed, so I flew up for the weekend anyway. I brought my parents, and we rented a car in Portland, drove up the coast and cut in to Bangor. It was our first trip to Maine, and I will definitely go back. My folks have been back since.
My dad and I are a long-standing, two-person, Stephen King book club. We have spent countless hours, our best hours, talking about his books. It was extremely cool to get into the settings of so many of our beloved stories. Plus, Maine is just long on atmosphere. (And Ms. Mod is a very nifty, real live human!)

Definately! We made the trip from Ireland in October 2005 and did a tour of New England...although we actually only spent 4 days in Maine the whole NE trip was inspired by my love of SK's books.
We spent a day in Bangor and saw Steve's house and visited Betts Bookstore, which has to be the best King dedicated bookstore on the planet. My husband bought me my first 1st edition there (Christine) and I've been hooked on building up my 1st edition collection since then.
New England, and Maine in particular, has to be one of the most beautiful places on earth and I hope to make it back there again one of these years...

I almost lived in Maine once...the USAF sent us there, well, actually just our furniture and household goods, then diverted us to Nebraska instead. It would have been awesome to have lived there for awhile! Am going to try to make it there with my sister...

lol back when i was in school my friend and i tried to convince my mom to take us there for spring break. it was all good until she realized the weather up there probably wouldn't be so nice in mid-march so we went to colonial Williamsburg instead, which was still great. I even got a first ed. Needful Things at this cute bookshop :)

I will be visiting there this summer, with my very own tour guide--sknut70--and can't wait to meet the delightful Ms Mod!
It's going to be an adventure...hopefully not like one from an SK novel though.
I ain't really THAT brave! :eek2:

I've been up to Bangor twice. A long time ago with a girlfriend, and another time with my wife, who had to find out what she missed. I felt weird taking pictures of Stephen King's house, though. I felt like a stalker or something. After all it is private property. Bett's was a cool bookstore but I think it's gone now.

Oh, yeah, you're from away! Clarify the butter?? No self-respecting Maineah would be getting all gourmet with their butter. Just melt about a pound per person and put it in individual bowls for dipping--don't want any altercations with more than one person going for the dipping at the same time. :wink2: And those fancy shmancy bibs? Hah! Those are for the tourists! We may occasionally indulge in those pre-moistened towelettes if we've got company coming but otherwise just roll off 6 or 7 sheets of paper towel per person and call it good.

Thanks for uh, clarifying that:biggrin2:.
Ya know to be honest, I'd as much prefer to just grab a stick, peel the paper back just enough, and commence to smearin' that buttery goodness as needed...one less bowl to wash:blush:.
Paper towels, moist towelettes, bibs:eyebrow:?...perhaps you've heard the state motto we're required to live by here in The Mighty BlueGrass, "Finger Lickin' Good?... ahhhh, now thems words to live by!
(Now I hafta admit, my snazzy bib overalls do come in handy for any kind of excess)

Well, there we go--another lobstah eatin' etiquette we need to clari....errr....clear up. :smile2: Get yourself some of those coated paper bowls so the butter doesn't soak through. Between the coating on the bowl and what might be left of the buttery goodness, they make great fire starters for the bonfire for that after-dinnah dessert of toasted marshmallows, if you're so inclined. Make sure you've got plenty of freshly cut sticks on hand. Those extra little touches really impress the company. :wink2: I prefer the traditional blueberry pie a la mode myself. Too many traumatic memories of being called Marsha-mallow as a child. :glare:

Oh my word I'd forgotten 'bout y'alls wonderfully scrumpalicious Blueberries:wow:...that alone would be worth a trip:love:!
(I have a Blueberry Jam & Whiskey BBQ recipe that's the bomb, though it takes either a brave soul or the extremely dainty...that or a circus clown, to eat it:biggrin2:)
I fully intend to graze Maine one day, it's nearer to the top of my big list of things to do!
(and uh, I hope you do realize, Marsha, that wee slip of the keyboard might have been shall we say, well let's just say it, a mistake..well I am part ambush predator ya know:wink2:)

Oh, it absolutely was a mistake. Having more company than you need is always a mistake in my book but I do tend to favor the hermit side of society.
That Blueberry Jam & Whiskey BBQ sauce sounds dee-lish! Sounds like we've got the makings of a nice exchange here--me coming from the blueberry state and you being in that whiskey/bourbon one. :wink2: And I do make a mean blueberry pie--none of that store-bought pie crust for me.
If you ever make it up here to Maine, you better not leave the state without saying hello to me! I might even break out the moist towelettes and fresh sticks--you bein' company and all.

That kinda chills & scares me...hmm, yet oddly enough, it makes me rather warm & tingly at the same time!
That's soooo Sssssmokin!
:biggrin2:
Boy oh boy oh boy have I ever got a Bourbon for you!
Bulliet Bourbon has a fine a flavor & texture there's to be had in a Bourbon, and is the only reason I miss drinking...those special reserves & boutiquey bourbons they've been hawkin' of late got nothin' on Bulliet!
It has just wisp of smoke, a hint of honey & a smooth as velvet vanilla aftertaste that just goes right up into your head:eek2:...oh my yes, it's a good thang!
I've cooked with it before, and it would certainly make that BBQ sauce most excellent as it makes the greatest mint julep I've ever had, and since there's some mint in the sauce, I figure it could only improve it.
(actually it's a glaze (and I think the original recipe called for rum) but I use it as a BBQ sauce..eh, some people say potato, some folks prefer tomato:oo:..well, they both go great on a plate is what I think I'm sayin')
Did I hear the "P" word?..what was that, somethin' soundin' like home made crust?
Oh lard yes we can do some serious horse tradin'!
Now darlin' the day I get a chance to get up there, you'll be sure to be the absolute last to know...shoot, I ain't giving you a big head start to grab some quick vacation time and be bookin' the next flight out west...why hell, my own family's taught me better than that:laugh:!

Making our 2nd trip over in 4 weeks!!! Kittery - Bethel - Millinocket - Bar Harbour - Portland. Won't be staying over in Bangor but will defo make a stop off again...is Betts Bookstore really gone??? Say it isn't so...
And our reason for Millinocket is it looks like the closest decent sized town to Baxter State Park, but I'm finding it hard to find much info on the place, would appreciate it if anyone has any tips. Oh and I love prawns and lobster so obviously this is a big draw for me...but I'll be 18 weeks pregnant when we arrive and some people have told me I'm meant to steer clear of shellfish!! But I was under the impression that as long as any meat/fish/shellfish is well cooked it's all good...any advice??

Here's a link to the website for Baxter State Park (http://www.baxterstateparkauthority.com/). For a little local color in the area, check out the Road Kill Cafe in Greenville Junction, Maine, near Baxter State Park. Here's a link to their menu (http://www.frivolity.com/teatime/Miscellaneous/road_kill_cafe_menu.txt). Probably best to check with your OB/GYN about what to eat.
