I am new to the forum (but a fan for almost 20 years), so if this post is not where it belongs (I!! think this where people should see it) but, please forgive me...
I just finished the last Dark Tower book today. This is my second time to read them. I realised today that I probably won't ever tire of the story of Roland Deschain. It's funny, how sometimes, with a really good book--make believe characters can somehow, while you are reading, embed themselves into your consciousness. You are sad when they are, scared for them when they are in trouble, and when the story ends, you miss them. It's like having to say goodbye to a good friend. Even Sai King says that he made friends of Roland and his ka-tet and had to see where their journey brought them. I understand that. This is what makes King a FANTASTIC writer...he knows where we are coming from. We read as the story unfolds, we watch and read where he is at the mercy of a great story.
Ridiculous as it may be but--there is a little piece of yourself that you keep inside of that book that is only for them , and it stays there with them after you have finished and closed the book and put it back on the shelf.
I can't quite bring myself to put this one back on the shelf. I will miss Roland, Eddie, Susannah, and Oy. So until I find another book to drag my mind off of this singularily engrossing, beautiful and tragic story I think I am going to keep the last one on my desk for a while. Just so that I know, even though I am done reading, and it is just a story, Roland has someone around to remember him while he is on his endless and lonely journey.
