Most ominous words indeed: a good ending, a satisfying ending. Sounds like it might be another example of 'we've bought the rights to your book(s) and ideas but we don't really like them and/or have the cash to do them justice, so we'll just use the title and go from there.'

Come on people, can we please cut the negativity. This argument is so stale it has worms.

Do not forget that Stephen has a level of editorial control on the screenplay. The creative team has also expressed over-and-over that they plan to honor the source material.

I'd also say that there is *no* ending to the Dark Tower. You guys know this better than anyone. There is no beginning and no end. The first seven books are only part of an "uber" literary and entertainment experience that spans the very definition of epic.

Not to mention the mythos completely embraces and facilitates the possibility for a zillion interpretations and possibilities. As Robin always tells me. There are many, *MANY* levels of the tower.

Hi,

Yes, you're quite right, Brian.

Although when I hear someone trying to assure me that a $45 million budget cut will improve it....well.....smells like ordure to me.

But then, it took a lot of false alarms, John Boorman, Ralph Bakshi etc, before Peter Jackson did LotR.

Good luck to all involved.

Long days and pleasant nights

What would a satisfying be other than the one we all already know?

Brian, thank you for those words. It is not so much a negative thinking rather a concern over the choice of wording when they described the "ending" in the article. You know I tend always to the positive. :wink2: It's like being twice shy, as we, the constant readers, have seen books turned into movies that are not true to the book. That is basically what I ask-- desire-- a movie true to the journey. Ka is a wheel and as you say there is no beginning and no ending, and there are many levels, oh indeed, many levels in this journey. My only personal request is that it be true to Sai King's vision of the journey. I trust his judgement, and stated, if it's ok with him--it's ok with me.

I agree that negativity is the wrong attitude here. I'm just a wait and see person myself. I'm just looking forward to the end of speculation and seeing the finished product. If and when this gets under way, then I will decide if I like it or not.

At first I was against the making of the movie. There's a pretty good chance that the adaptation, no matter the producer, would be a steaming pile of crap. After a while I started to get into the idea of the DT series as movies and became excited about the project. I had even hoped to find a way to get cast as an extra. When the project was canceled I figured it was probably for the best anyway. I didn't want future generations getting to know Roland and his ka-tet through a ****** movie/mini-series. Now it's back on but with huge cuts to the budget? Noooooooooooooo. I don't know what to think or feel. Sadness is in my emotional forefront right now. Maybe I'll get excited again. This is too much up and down already. Also, I love Javier Bardem, but as Roland? His head is too big. Seriously, he has a pumpkin head. His head screams of excessive living and comfort. He doesn't have enough chisel and grit to his face to portray Roland in my opinion. :-)

Hi,

Hmm, interesting idea!

Perhaps if someone convinced them of the cross-marketing possibilities with games for the Playstation and PSP?

Brilliant idea John. With a game that can reach the community on PlayStation Network that could gather interest in the film. Ive not played it but a Red Dead Redemption style game could be very popular especially pushed by a big game company like Rockstar, Bethesda or Konami. I believe Silent Hill was inspired by Sai King an thats done very well

I'm not really sure if Viggo is able to pull of the role of Roland. He's too.. I'd like to say emotional? Or something... I think Roland should be played by someone with more "mysterious charisma".. It's hard to explain exactly what I mean, since Roland is a very emotional character. Also, I don't think Viggo has the right looks for playing Roland.

I've actually started liking the thought of having Javier portraying Roland. At first I didn't like it because I never pictured Roland being of any other descent but caucasian, but somehow I've grown into the thought of him having some latino characteristics. Javier is an excellent actor, and I'm almost sure he could pull of the charisma and "witty" characteristics Roland has.

A couple of days ago, while I was watching The Walking Dead, I realized something. The kid who plays Carl, Chandler Riggs I think he's called, could be an excellent choice for the role of Jake, what do you think? Judging from his looks I'd say he's about the right age too.

As many others, I've always thought it doesn't really matter who they choose to play Jake, because let's face it, there's a bigger possibility for success if it's someone new rather than someone we've already seen everywhere.

Another good choice could be the kid who plays Bran Stark on Game of Thrones. I know, he is still too young, but since it's only recently been announced that HBO will take over the series, it means there's still going to be a couple of years before they start putting it into production. By that time, I think he'll be of the right age.

Has anyone seen the actor in the new AMC program, Hell on Wheels. He kind of looks like what I pictured for Roland, except the beard is a little too heavy. He's got that mysterious quality about him too. I wish I could remember his name. Any one know who I mean?

Is this him?

I haven't actually started watching Hell on Wheels yet, but it's high on my list of series to check out. Maybe I should give it a watch this weekend..

I found this at HuffPost, its a little bit of an interview with Ron.

"I continue to be interested in the possibility of "Dark Tower" functioning in a movie version and a television version. If I get to do "Dark Tower," there's also a video game element that would be a part of fleshing out the narrative of the Stephen King universe. I think it's time to be adventuresome, be bold, and sort of explore the ways in which people want to experience characters, relationships, settings and situations."

very interesting.

I would love to see this movie/TV melting pot idea come to fruition, but I'd be totally happy with recurring hour long drama on HBO or Showtime (sorry, I think the bad language adds something). I can see it running for years, like Lost or Sopranos. It could last forever with the way this series is written!!

His name is Anson Mount. Would be a good choice, agreed. However, I'm one of those annoying people that hopes DT films do not get made.

Yes, very annoying. LOL JK

I really want to see this done in some form, whether film/tv or both. I will be a little disappointed if it's not done right, but just being able to go back and live in that world for a little while will be worth it.

Thanks for the update Bev. I can't wait to see these movies when they are eventually made...I'll be first in line! Sure they probably won't measure up to the books, but I'm still willing to give them a chance. There's lots of SK adaptations that are different from the books, either in character detail or storyline, but I still love them, ie, Shawshank, 1408, The Mist, The Shining. I want to see this story adapted for the big screen, and even if it is different from how we imagine our DT at least we always have to books to re~read whenever we choose.
